Cubs 2010 Television Broadcast Schedule

Yesterday, we learned of the Cubs' Fox broadcast schedule (see front-page fanshot below for more information).

Today, the Cubs announced the rest of their broadcast schedule. Strangely, Opening Day at Atlanta will be broadcast only locally in Chicago on WCIU -- although I would guess, given the 3:10 CDT starting time, it will probably also be picked up nationally by ESPN.

Complete schedule after the jump. All times listed are CDT. This schedule will also be permanently on the left sidebar for easy reference.

Barring weird blackouts, I'll be able to watch only 74 games via WGN, ESPN or Fox. :(

When does the subscription Cubs Network launch and do they need a producer? I’m ready to roll!

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...

Get rid of those damn WCIU games!

Nobody outside of the Chicago gets that channel and the bars here in central Illinois can’t even get it with their MLB Extra Innings package. Can’t believe in this day and age there are still games that I cannot see on tv.

Blackouts are so stupid

I am blacked for Cardinals, Reds and Braves. It is a 4 hour drive to St. Louis, 7 hour drive to Cincy and 6 to Atlanta, so I am definately bitter about it.

I buy/get the MLB extra innings package, even though I get screwed pretty bad.

I would like to propose a plan to major league baseball. I think I pay $199 for the MLB package, I would be willing to pay the $199 and choose the Cubs as my #1 team and only get their games but be guaranteed to see all games that are not on Fox or ESPN. I also want to be guaranteed to get the Cubs broadcasters instead of the road ones.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Feb 4, 2010 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

That makes perfect sense.

Which is why Bud Selig won’t do it.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Go Pack!

I made my case for lifting the blackout to management at the convention.

I think they know how Cubs fans feel. Hopefully, new ownership will take the lead in lifting the blackouts.

Good

Times are tough, I may not be able to justify paying for it if I am missing out on 20-30% of the games which happens between WCIU & my 3 NL teams that I am in blackout zone.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Feb 4, 2010 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think

that the Cubs are one of the teams blocking the lifting of blackouts. From what I’m hearing, it’s the small market teams that fear that the popular teams will move into their secondary markets.

The thing is, blackouts wouldn’t be a problem if there were only one team per market. (Or two for the NY, LA, Chicago, Bay Area and DC/Baltimore markets.) But the Brewers are unwilling to admit that they really don’t broadcast in Des Moines and the the Astros won’t admit they really don’t broadcast in Little Rock. And no one is willing to give up any territory.

by Josh Timmers on Feb 5, 2010 11:52 PM CST up reply actions

You're right.

But if the Cubs wanted to do so, they could be among the leaders in getting these lifted. The “territories” carved out in the 1970’s make no sense any more, because, as you note, the teams that protect them no longer broadcast into them.

The rights-holder to those games -- WGN.

Those are games WGN farms out to a ‘sub-contractor.’ — WCIU. These are times they don’t want to pre-empt local Channel 9 CW Programming.

White Sox games on WCIU also fall into this category. You’ll note “CUBS NET” or ’ SOX NET’ games on WCIU are identical to WGN’s graphics, production crews, etc.

Blame Gossip Girl and WGN for the farm-outs. That leaves us on EI to have to watch the other team’s feed — which is better than parts of the midwest, which are blacked out completely.

I have a better chance of watching the game than somebody within 150 miles of Chicago.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Feb 4, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

It's only eight games a year.

I too do not understand the WCIU crap,

Not having the opener on WGN is a big slap in the face to the millions of Cub fans across the country. Not everyone lives in Chicago.

by TJ11 on Feb 4, 2010 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

I repeat.

The game will be on ESPN. You won’t miss it. In fact, since the Cubs are contracted for eight games a year on WCIU, this is a way of farming out one of those games, knowing it can still be seen nationally.

by Al Yellon on Feb 4, 2010 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

What if it didn't happen to be on ESPN?

Thank goodness it is, but I am just saying,

We wait all winter for Cub season to start again and we have to count on ESPN instead of their flagship channel.

I know they are making more money this way, but I do miss the old days sometimes.

by TJ11 on Feb 4, 2010 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

My point is...

… that the Cubs must have known they’d get ESPN coverage, or they wouldn’t have done the WCIU thing for Opening Day.

See what I mean?

by Al Yellon on Feb 4, 2010 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

What this does, essentially...

… is reduce to seven the number of WCIU games that can’t be seen outside Chicago. There may be others later in the year if ESPN picks up games on Monday or Wednesday nights.

Thanks for posting this, Al.

I’m glad to see there are only few games on CSN+. If I’m not mistaken, that’s CLTV and, now that we’ve switched to AT&T U-Verse, we no longer get that channel. Of course, I’ve also lost MLB Network. :-(

Financial reasons.

We learned we could save around $100 month over Comcast. Believe me, I wasn’t happy about it, but I really couldn’t justify sticking with Comcast just for MLB Network — as much as I did love having it. We had to tighten up our family budget.

I have comcast.

They changed some of the channels and gave us a new remote (that I can’t quite figure out) as an “upgrade.” We used to get CLTV, but now it says “not authorized”. I’m assuming I’d have to upgrade my service to get it now. However, I can’t find CSN at all. I was just wondering if CSN possibly went by another name ( like the CSN+ was CLTV) and that is why I can’t find it.

Maybe we have it and I’m just too old to figure it out. Serves me right for all those jokes I made about my parents when they couldn’t program a VCR. LOL.

Found this

Don’t know if you tried this or not but you type in your address and it gives you your channel line up. Just pick your package from the drop down menu. Depending on where you are in the Chicago area and what type of service you have, CLTV should be channel 38.

Found CSN now. Phew-big sigh of relief. It was right there along. It was the CH for Chicago that threw me off (it’s listed as CSNCH on my TV). I still don’t get CLTV, but that is only a handful of games so I won’t sweat that out. I like listening to Pat and Ron anyway..or I can give the game threads a try.

Most cable and Satellite systems that carry CSN

carry CSN+ on a separate Channel. On COMCAST, it was carried on CLTV, but I know on my U-Verse, my Father-in-laws Direct TV and my neighbors Dish TV, we all get CSN+ on a separate channel thats only active when something is being broadcast on CSN+. On U-Verse CSN+ is 742, on Direct TV it’s 666, on Dish it’s 441. Check your cable listings to see if there is a CSN+ channel.

We still have basic cable service at my house and they took away CLTV last year and moved it over to digital. If you have digital, you should get it. Give Comcast a call and figure out why it doesn’t work.

Wasn't there a stretch in September 2007,

When the Cubs went nearly four weeks without an off day (and even had a double-header in St. Louis)?

I seem to remember such a stretch. The one off day in that time period had a makeup game of a rainout between the Cubs and Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Yes.

That off-day game had to be approved by the players. Since it was the only off-day left in the season, the game had to be played that day.

Not to open this debate again....

but July and August would be the time of year that the Cubs should really push for more home night games. It seems like they always do a lot of night games early and late in the year, when the hot weather is not really a factor anyway. These are for TV ratings, I know, but if they really wanted to do what’s best for the TEAM (what a concept) then the 7:05 games should be during the hot summer months.

Actually,

in looking at the schedule closer, they did better this year. Still the typical Monday and Tuesday home night games, but they way the schedule is laid out, only two in April, the rest are later in the season. OK, now we’re getting somewhere. Now if we can get the total number of 7:00 games to somewhere in the neighborhood of 40, I’ll be happy and I promise to drop this subject for good, since I bring it up every year.

I think eventually they will ask to lift the limit to 40.

For the foreseeable future, it’s going to stay at 30.

Is it also possible that MLB Network could pick up Opening Day? I wonder if they have put out their Spring Training schedule yet as well?

I've said it before ...

I HATE the fact that teams have Opening Day on a Monday. I know, I know — it’s tradition. But, frankly, I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday (or a Sunday) than watching several season openers.

And the Sunday night game doesn’t make things better — unless the Cubs are playing.

Ugh

So a large swath of Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana wont get to see opening day because ESPN will be blacked out where WCIU is not present.

Great way to start the season. Geesh.

by Al Yellon on Feb 4, 2010 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

That's what annoys me...

It’s not like WCIU can even been seen in my part of Northern Illinois, but because of the blackout rules, I won’t be able to see the game if ESPN does carries it.

And how important is CW programing that it can’t be pre-empted for OPENING DAY?!

See, that's the stupid part.

Blacking out ESPN in areas where WCIU cannot be seen. Stupid.

by Al Yellon on Feb 4, 2010 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Via network affiliation contracts

If a local station pre-empts network programming, they will lose money from the network. Commercial spot prices are based on ratings (and the promise, for an example — Gossip Girls will be seen at the time the network says it will in the Chicago market)) and complete clearance of the network shows by all affiliates.

The CW is struggling and it cannot afford to have one of its’ top affiliates NOT show its’ programming. It’s easy to preempt WGN America programming for Cubs baseball. WGN’s national service can do whatever they want with programming they own.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Feb 5, 2010 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

Which is all the more reason...

… that the Cubs/WGN could put baseball on the national channel, while still keeping the CW programs on the local version of WGN.

Free Preview - Extra Innings

The last couple years EI has had a free preview for the first week of the season, then again after the all-star break, so you should be able to see the opener then, even if it is with the Brave’s announcers.
