OT: On topic or off?
Allow me to start this post by saying, that although I am an infrequent poster, I read everything on this blog on a daily basis. I enjoy very much the perspectives of everyone here – and if I felt I had anything to add, I would likely post more often. Most of the time, my posts probably “take away” more than they add to the topic.
Anyways, the point I would like to make today is that it seems over the last 3 years that I have been visiting this blog, there have been some changes – notably over this last season. In short: I think we have may have lost our way. It used to be we would post about Cubs baseball, or at least something related to baseball. Recently, fanposts have turned into (what some may call) silly discussions or in some cases, serious discussions that one may think would never occur on a baseball blog. Of course, these types of posts have always occurred, but it seems that they are occurring with greater frequency.
Now look, before you come out “guns a-blazin’” against me, I’m just pointing out a trend I have noticed – WITHOUT judgment. I think you all are a bunch of nice folks, and I feel even better about being a Cubs fan from getting to know you through your comments. I do wonder though, if anyone else has noticed this and if perhaps people feel like we need to get on point. I know it’s the off season, and there is not a lot of news, but there are other sports, is it really necessary to get bogged down in (so many) posts about topics far removed from sports in general?
Again, I’m only wondering if anyone else might be thinking along these lines,. I’ve tried hard to be respectful about this, and I certainly will not think any less of anyone nor change my BCB reading habits if everyone disagrees.
Thanks for your time.
----S
P.S. I’ll be at ST 3/18 – 3/23, be cool to meet up at Diamonds with fellow BCBers that week.
Oh damn is this off topic?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Well as someone nominated in the BCB awards for "Most likely to hijack a thread..." a-HEM...
Maybe I should just shut up on this one ;)
My take is this: It’s a BCB community, not a BCB collective. We’re not the Borg(e) (Victor), thinking only with a single mind on a single focussed topic.
So we, like any group of people, we sway during the course of a discussion- to and fro. We mostly keep on topic, but when we don’t we try and note it with a OT: designation (for a Fanpost or Fanshot).
Inside the threads, the river runs where it runs. As long as we are respectful of each other, I’m fine with it.
If a portion of a thread discussion goes way off what I’m interested in, then I skip down with the ever-trusty “Z” key until I get to a spot I like. No big deal.
Anyway, that’s my two cents.

Oh i know.
And you do an excellent job. I just meant that if the OP wanted a dry ‘no OT’ approach to the team, there is an easier way to get it than griping about the content at BCB.

I was griping. I have no gripes – I like this site a lot, along with the people on it. I just was curious regarding something I feel is a trend. Thats all, no hurt no foul.

It's the offseason.
I think some of these OT posts are fine, since most days in the winter, there isn’t any baseball to discuss. This will diminish or disappear during the season.

Just seems like
greater frequency than in the past. I mean, I know over the last 3 years in the off season this happens, which is fine but it seems like more to me. Do you think its because of the dissapointing regular season we had?

I bet its got to do with site growth.
There are more OT posts…. and more posts in general.

I think you touched on a big part of why the OT exist
we are a family of sorts. We share many common interests, and (with or without meeting in person) are concerned of each others wellness. I am sure since it is the offseason and a slow one at that it has been a litle more than in the past, but even during the season it happens.

Somehow, while reading, there is an overpowering sense of guilt is coming over me....
I probably am guilty of what you speak of, but I do try to stay out of more serious discussions that I know nothing about. I do ask questions, but try to ask after ther discussions die down. I have a tendancy to pick up on the non serious stuff….I feel bad this is ruining this site for you.
baseball.........is Kool Aid the remedy, or the cause of my desire for it
Not ruining anything
Remember, I just said it was an observation. I mean, I can ignore OT fanposts / shots. I just wondered if there was perhaps a reason for what I had perceived as an increase in frequency. I like all you guys and I enjoy some of the lighter OT posts as well. It just seemed to me in the past that our blog focused alot on Cubs and baseball related stories – whether historical or recent. When visiting other SB nation baseball sites they always seemed to pale in comparison to ours. Part of that IMO was because of our content. Like I said it does not diminish my interest in BCB, there will always be topics of interest to me here.
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make something up"
You took the words right out of my mouth.
I was going to say “Sorry, guilty as charged.”
Also as others have stated it is the off season and this stuff will most likely die down once we hit ST. I’ve really been enjoying some of the off topic discussions though. It’s been a help during a long winter.

[edit] “Pants on the Ground”
During the Atlanta auditions, 62-year-old activist Larry Platt appeared and performed his favorite original song, “Pants on the Ground.” The song is in reference to people wearing the hip-hop style of clothing including pants that sag. Platt was ineligible to continue, due to being well over the show’s age limit of 28 years old. His performance has since become a viral hit, and several celebrities performed the song in the days that followed the original airing of his audition.

and I dont blame him. Sometimes tho people forget that if its too much OT, or just not something to talk here Al can (has) and will delete it with a kind email to the OP letting him/her know why.
And in case people forgot, Al himself had a post about the Star Trek movie last season (during the season, not the off season), explaining how he liked it, giving his own review, showing that even Al enjoys some OT talks.
This is a baseball based blog, but like everything in life it ventures off a little from time to time.

When you get more people
And when BCB gains popularity, you’re going to get results like you’ve noticed.
Yeah, there’s more off topic stuff. A lot of personal threads, like asking for prayers for sick Cubs fans or introductions. The Harry Potter thread and even my trivia one this week. It’s the off season though. And it’s the internet. It’s not like we’re taking up space. I think without these threads, we’d be a lot more bored. Some of us have limited internet use during the work days and for whatever reason, BCB is not blocked. So we spend the majority of our days on here. Given that, I look forward to the new threads about randomness. It’s nice to talk about things other than the Cubs every once in a while. When you’ve been posting or reading here for a while, you get to know some of the other posters. It’s nice to see a different side of them once in a while.
"If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I'd trip her. Oh, I'd pick her up and brush her off and say, 'Sorry, Mom,' but nobody beats me." ~ Leo Durocher
I have enjoyed
The various OT posts: the “finish the lyrics” post was great.
A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.
Me too FWIW
I’m trying to explain to the OP, sorry if that didn’t come across in my post
"If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I'd trip her. Oh, I'd pick her up and brush her off and say, 'Sorry, Mom,' but nobody beats me." ~ Leo Durocher
I don't think the trivia is remotly OT.
This is a Cubs fan COMMUNITY. Not Cubs news.
Dum spiro spero... | Follow me on twitter or else: @andrewjstone.
I, personally, have enjoyed the trivia post.
It’s baseball related. This is a baseball site — doesn’t have to be all Cubs; anything baseball-related I would consider to be on topic.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
The OP of that trivia thread must be some cool guy then....
It’s not directly Cubs news, if you want to nitpick. Just saying. Trying to see things from the OP’s perspective
"If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I'd trip her. Oh, I'd pick her up and brush her off and say, 'Sorry, Mom,' but nobody beats me." ~ Leo Durocher
I appreciate the polite tone of this post.
I also do agree that the number of “off-topic” posts has increased from what I remember of years/off-season’s past. I attribute it to two things: 1)It’s the offseason and people are bored/anxious, and 2)There are more new people around and there hasn’t really been an announcement in a while mentioning that this isn’t a “general topics” blog (or at least not that I remember).
I do find the increased frequency of OT posts to be a mild irritation (and I want to emphasize mild), especially if they aren’t clearly labeled as to their actual topic. And additionally, I know there are things that are important to people that they’d like to talk about, but that aren’t really appropriate for this venue. Since it is the offseason, I’m not going to complain too much (or at all, apart from this comment here; and especially if their topic is something that’s more important than baseball like life and death). But I hope that as the season draws near people might choose to find other venue’s that might be more appropriate.
One reason I feel that way is that for some of us, we use this board as an escape from the events of life that trouble us and would rather have the site as purely baseball, without reminders of the things we’re hoping to get a brief break from. Of course, that’s just my own view and I don’t expect that everyone feels the same nor must accede to my vision of the site.
Anyway, in the end it’s Al’s choice as to how this all goes. Regardless – or at least barring any major changes – I’ll still be around here anyway. But I do hope that as the season draws near the site will return to its more normal form though. But this is all just my penny-thoughts.
I think you'll see far fewer of them once there's real baseball to talk about.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

Meh.
I know it’s the off season, and there is not a lot of news, but there are other sports, is it really necessary to get bogged down in (so many) posts about topics far removed from sports in general?
You’re really answering your own question here. There is nothing Cubs-related to talk about most days in the offseason, so why sit around waiting for news when we can discuss something else that interests a lot of people around here?
By your logic, a post about football would be as OT as a post about LOST – since as you noted, this is a Cubs blog, not a sports blog. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with OT posts – especially when they’re marked OT. If you’re worried about them pushing Cubs posts off the front page, go into your settings and make it so more FanPosts/Shots appear on your front page. You could also just click on ‘All FanPosts’ to look for anything that might interest you.
Obviously there was some drama years back when things were getting a little too OT for some people a little too often, but in the offseason I can’t imagine how this can be viewed as a problem.
And I actually started typing up a long, long FanPost about the premiere of LOST, but decided against it because I was worried that this exact sentiment would be shared by many. Although in all honesty, I’m still itching to start up that LOST post.

Oh I agree
As I stated earlier, its up to me to decide which fanposts/shots I read. And as you mention easy enough for me to adjust my settings to filter such posts. My original intent was simply to find out if others had noticed a change. The big draw for me to BCB was the content and shear knowledge of the fans commenting. This made it really appealing to me, and peppered with some OT posts, whether serious or not, was cool. I just hope that the volume will somewhat diminish as we get closer to the season – keeping BCB in line as being one of the most informative Cubs blogs on the net.

Hm, I don't feel like it's been that big of a problem...
…especially seeing as how it’s the off-season. My Fanpost sidebar is set at 10 and most of them are related to the Cubs or baseball in one way or another. (Ha, as I’m typing this, I see Drew’s statistical breakdown.)
In [recent] years past
there have been much higher expectations from the Cubs where as it seems we’re in a holding pattern this time around so not as much to talk about.
My 2nd thought is that Al and SBN have grown exponentially in the last year and have been exposed to the masses thru Yahoo, Internet articles quoting Al, even a recent interview he did with the HotStove blog. So there are bound to be many new posters that are not aware of the culture of BCB from the past.
BCB has definitely changed a lot from back way before the 2.0 revolution, but most of it has been for the better. It will however be interesting to see how things develop once baseball starts with these aforementioned “new posters” but I think for the most part there will be less of them (off topic).

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I agree with the original poster
I’ve been coming to BCB for a few years now, and I read pretty much everything that is posted on a daily basis. I don’t post often because several people usually say exactly what I’m thinking in a much better way. This is one topic, however, that I have been thinking a lot about since the beginning of last season.
It seems to me that the overall quality of the fanposts and comments within them has become somewhat watered down over the last year or so. I think there are several reasons for this gradual change, but most of them center around respect and maturity.
Several well respected posters here are so well respected because of the higher quality baseball discussions that they encourage and participate in. Lately these very same posters seem much more interested in defending their particular philosophy instead of talking baseball. There are some posters who I actively searched out their comments in threads in anticiaption of informative and relevant baseball discussion. Now I shy away from some of these same posters because everything they post is a thinly veiled attempt to either prove themselves right or take a stab at another.
It gets a little irritating to see someone start a conversation with the intent of inciting a riot over intangibles or MB or steroids or whatever. Then the predictable, “This is stupid” comment comes next, followed by everyone trying to defend their position, which in general has nothing to do about baseball. In the worst cases, things devolve into an ugly semantics battle with both sides ultimately looking a little immature.
From the outside looking in, it is similar to a group of middle school kids bickering over who’s the coolest or something. When in reality, no one really cares. It’s not important to come on this site and bicker about the human condition, or conduct grammar class, or subtlely attack other posters across multiple threads for things they should have just kept to themselves in the first place. Al, as much as I repect you for what you do, you play a part in encouraging this playground mentality by throwing out one liners and stabbing little remarks at posters who you don’t approve of. If you don’t approve of BLOU or think he is unruly to the point of taking away from the blog (I’m not saying that I have this opinion), ban him, and ban him every time you even suspect he has a new account. Don’t paasive aggressively take jabs at his posts with immature retorts. I think you have got caught up in the war on BLOU and have forgotten about how you have always taken the high road in the past.
Secondly, all of these childish arguments and antics have obviously driven away some of the more intelligent and knowledgeable posters. Not many people who want to talk strictly baseball want to sift through 7,000 comments about the correct meaning of two words just to find the small part of the post where we actually discuss baseball. Especially not when there are other sites out there that let them do just that. Posters like toons, cwyers, mph73, wreckard, dartmouth, damen, DGU, etc, probably don’t want to sort through all the BS just to talk about the team they love. I’m not saying that I agree or disagree with all of these people on their ideas, but I think it’s obvious that they enjoy talking baseball and only baseball, and could proably care less about the who is voted class clown or best looking of BCB.
I’m also aware that some of these people write and work for other sites and may not have time to participate in BCB as much as we would like, but I think we can all agree that when you lose well informed, intellignet people who have well developed opinions about baseball (regardless of whether you disagree or not) it takes away from the quality of the site as a whole.
I believe that BCB is one of the great Cubs resources on the web, but it has been changing into more of a social site as opposed to a baseball discussion site. I get the feeling that I’m in a chat room most of the time on BCB, whereas, originally, I felt like I was learning something new that applied to the game we all love every day of the week. If the powers at be prefer the site to be this way, I’m ok with that also, but I feel like we’re losing a little bit of relevance when it comes to baseball discussion with each passing season.
Sorry for the rant, but I mean nothing in a disrespectful way, so I hope no one takes it that way.

C'mon, I never said that
I just said that if you run a site and someone is unruly enough to compel you to make snarky remarks after a large amount of their posts, just give them the boot, or at least step back and think about the situation. And I know that by saying that I’m essentially holding Al to a little higher standard than the rest of us, but I think he understands there is a difference in responsibility.
In regard to the particular poster you are discussing....
… I have banned him. Over and over. He has issued apologies and I let him back, primarily because when he DOES stick to baseball and avoids the personal attacks, he can add to the discussion.
The comments I make? Maybe trying to shame him into behaving himself. I guess it’s not working very well.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I recognize that you have a tough job, Al
In no way am I trying to second guess you, here. I just know that when I see you trashing BLOU regularly, I think others begin to think that it’s ok.
What makes it very hard is exactly as you say, he does add some good discussion in between all that ranting.
Right, that's the dilemma.
Maybe I should go back to ignoring his posts.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I personally think he does add to the discussion.
Unfortunately, he has a confrontational way of talking and a reputation here that is hard to overcome. People end up responding with attacks or jokes instead of serious conversation. Often it seems to be only because it’s him that is talking. It’s a shame actually because some of his thoughts can be pretty interesting. There have been a few times I would have liked to agree with him but by the time I could comment it would have been pointless because the thread had already gone haywire.

Not really. I’m not saying he can’t say something intelligent, or that he can’t contribute. But discussing isn’t in his interest. I understand that,
But when he perceives disagreements with people here, they get called names because he doesn’t agree with them. He has called me “Maple Syrup Man” on several occasions, even doing it when I asked him politely to stop.
When he comes by after the Cubs lose, he says the same things, over and over. I think this repetition also hurts his reputation, as people get tired of seeing the same things, and yet he still doesn’t stop.
I once saw him show up in a post-game thread and begin a comment with a title along the lines of “Cubs are a mess right now.” Only problem is the Cubs had just won in St. Louis by the score of 10-3.

Sometimes they come back, sometimes they don’t. (I believe cwyers is writing for Baseball Prospectus now, by the way.) Bad posters come, go, come back, get banned, come back again. The only thing that I worry about is...
what happened a few years ago. There was a contingency of people who would regularly post OT, one person was even posting an OT post everyday with celebrity/gossip stuff, even during the season if I remember correctly. They all became so comfortable with each other that other posters began to feel isolated and it created animosity among posters. This eventually led to BCB losing quite a few regular posters, an event I like to call The Great BCB Rift.
If someone would post a topic that was not a great topic, but still a Cubs topic, they would highjack the thread and talk about God knows what. This also led to people feeling frustrated about even posting a topic out of fear that it would not be taken seriously and their comments/questions would go unanswered or, to a certain extent, mocked.
Obviously, as this is a community, people are going to feel more comfortable with one another as they get to “know” each other, it happens. And by no means is this a slight against Cubbie-Tim, but just for example, creating a BCB awards could be viewed as nothing more than a popularity, or unpopularity, contest. I voted in it and honestly don’t have a problem with it but think some people could view it that way.
Having been here at the blog for quite a while now, I know that the off season breeds boredom and OT posts. I just hope that it doesn’t carry over into this coming season and we eventually see BCB devolve into what happened as I described above.

I don’t have a problem with it, I voted in it and am looking forward to seeing the results. I was just presenting another viewpoint. But really, isn’t any contest voted on by the general population a popularity contest?

Not to be taken as a slight
I’m repeating what DTJchris said – and I enjoyed the BCB awards thread very much. But it did have a little bit of a “high school year book” feel to it. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make something up"
and so is anything voted on
like the ASG, or AMerican Idol, etc.
Seems that the majority are enjoying it, and that was the entire point. I am glad people are enjoying it, and that it is just one more thing to take our minds off how long it is til ST starts up again

It's perfect timing for Oscar season.
It was fun to be a member of the academy and be able to nominate and vote.

The other thing the BCB Awards might do...
is make newcomers see the community that has developed here and want to keep coming back so they can become part of the community.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Digg format.
I know we can rec posts now, and i know this has been brought up many times before, but this site really could use and unrec feature as well.
If we could rec the good fanposts up (as we do now) and unrec the bad fanposts in to oblivion, the OTness of some posts wouldn’t matter, as it would be clearly evident what value it had to this community, no matter the relation to the Cubs it had.
Same would be useful for fanshots and commenting.
The trolls of this site wouldn’t get nearly the fun from it if a few “unrecs” sent their comments below a reader-optional fold, or removed all of the vowels (called disemvoweling), making their trolling unreadable.
Dum spiro spero... | Follow me on twitter or else: @andrewjstone.
NO!
I think unrec-ing could end up becoming mean. Besides I would cry if I ever got unrec’d.
"Fasten those seatbelts"-Pat Hughes
I don't think the nature of the community here would lead to malicious unrecing.
You’ll notice the good stuff gets rec’d up, no matter who posts it – old member or new, hated or loved, if you type some words up and they have value, that value is rewarded.
Democracy is the way! Give us our unrec button!

grant points to that user. Cumulative point totals are shown with user name. For example where my name is below.

12 DAYS TILL PITCHERS AND CATCHERS & INJURED PLAYERS REPORT
So in a little less than two weeks we can got to the ON topic stuff, like Fuld getting his spot on the bench, and if “special assistant to the GM” Maddux will continue to pull clubhouse pranks. So goof off for a little while longer with OT stuff and soon we can discuss the above, as well as which player got the best off season hair cut.

I think Maddux would be far more likely to mark a spot
so to speak but probably the spot of another player.
Just hoping Sam is the 4th/5th outfielder. After all Scales has an ST invitation and we know how Lou thinks he is good
guy to play in the OF.

Last year I didn't visit BCB for a while in the offseason
This offseason has been better, IMHO, even though there has been less interesting Cub news.
I will say that I don’t have impressions in my mind of the poster here and their favorite opinions or slants. I went to the BCB Awards poll, and put in some names, but I couldn’t really remember who tends to go off-topic or who is who in the stats vs scouting debate.
When I reply to a comment here, I don’t pay attention to who made the comment. I just add my two cents. Apart from a few experts, like Josh77, toonsterwu, and Al himself, you all look the same to me. Does that mean I’m old?

All we need is Baseball to start up again,
then we won’t be bored to distraction and be creating “off the wall” threads, most of which, by the way, I enjoyed throughly. I also always look forward to well written Fanposts, Fanshots, articles and comments by people who know more about the game than I do.
A community which can so easily embrace several generations of fans, with very diverse backgrounds and differing levels of baseball knowledge, is special. Many of us live in a Cubs dispora, and this makes the crowd here even more special. With this background, I am not worried about too much silliness or too many very mathematical statistic disputes on BCB, etc.
I would think that most of is were originally attracted to the site by the quality Cubs content paired with a lively bunch of people. The longer we, in a virtual sense, hang together, the more we know about each other personally, the more secondary subjects will come up. Just imagine sitting next to a fan in Wrigley for game after game, and never, for example, mentioning how pretty the boats on the lake are, which leads to talking about… The same thing happens here, and does not diminish us as fans. Talking about boating for a couple of comments could, IMHO, easily be a sub-thread in a game thread. Doing the same thing in a thread analysing the WAR of two possible new Cubs outfielders, shouldn’t be.
On the whole, I think we do a fairly good job of retainig the correct balance between ON and OFF topic.
Thank you for letting me add my somewhat confused rant.

One 'en' too many - the correct word is empfohlen.
When I was still in Chicago, I always tried to sit high above 1st, where you had a good view of the infield defensive play and could see the lake.

IMHO not at all. I envy your trip to ST and look forward to reading about your impressions of the 2010 Cubs team.

Oh my,
So sorry to hear that. We are here for you, always.
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

I agree totally with your comments. I post every once in awhile because of the same things you mentioned.

How much longer is the picture series? I was tired of it after like the third picture. I understand some people like it, but personally I dont like it.
Then don't look at them.
A lot of people do like them. At least it’s baseball-related, in a winter month when there’s no baseball.
