Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

They've announced the plans for MLB-TV for the season....$100 for basic, $120 for premium. Seems to include the radio broadcasts like last year and some level of access through portable devices. I know I'll be signing up!

TIP

If you have two cable services such as Cablevision and Verizon Fios you can get a free year of MLB Extra Innings.

Tell your cable company you are switching services to Fios because they have WGN which they don’t offer. Say you’re watching Cubs games on there. Most likely your cable company will offer you EI for free. We’ve got it 3 years straight :)

Is it worth it?

I had it last year and it was handy when I traveled but other times I ran into blackout restrictions. I was told that there are ways around that with a proxy server but I’ve not explored that. Anyway, I’d appreciate any thoughts one way or the other. Thanks.

I like it because it's portable.

Extra Innings is only good to watch at home unless you have a sling box. I choose to subscribe to MLB.TV because it’s portable. I absolutely love the new at bat app for iPod and iPhone. It allows me to watch or listen to games anywhere with my iPod, not just at my computer.

MLB.TV is cheaper than extra innings but it does have some technical issues at times. They totally overhauled their platform last year and it took a little bit to work out some of the kinks. The added features and the quality of the picture were worth it, in my opinion. I also like that you get to select the home or away broadcasts.

If you do subscribe, be prepared to deal with tech issues at time. My advice is if you are having issues with a tv stream, just switch to the audio to save yourself the aggravation. If HD is important to you, go with EI.

I live in Chicago so I don’t subscribe to get Cub games. I subscribe because the Cubs play so many day games, it gives me the chance to see a lot of other teams in the evenings. You get the audio too so that comes in handy to listen to games at work since I can’t get a radio signal.

EI always has a free trial the 1st week of the season so if you’ve never watched games that way, you can get a peek at what watching games using that option.

Holy crap, $120?

I think I’m set for auto-renew, but I don’t know if I can accept that. Then again, if I can get access via my Blackberry maybe I’ll reconsider. Thanks for posting.

That's $10 more than last year.

Apparently the roll-back is over. (Last year they rolled back prices $10.)

For some reason, I thought it was around $70 last year.

I really need to think about how much I value/use mlb.tv because my wife is not going to be pleased to see a $120 charge show up on our credit card.

Yeah...

…I think the basic plan last year was $69.95 or something; that’s what I had. I think that’s the one that’s goine up to $100. Not sure how much the premium package was last year.

The MLB web site is a little sketchy on details (surprise!) but they make it sound like the purchase price might include access from portable devices. I know last year I had to pay another $8 or so for an iPhone app; if they managed to take that expense out it would pad the impact a little.

But I hear you on the cost….being out-of-market I don’t have a lot of choice; for me it comes down to just getting the radio package or popping for video too. The radio really is a great thing, but I find myself itching to see the game sometimes….decisions, decisions.

It was $10 for the iphone app last year

It will probably be the same thing this year

Yeah, this

I mean, jeez, we’re willing buyers, ready to pay money for content. It’s downright unAmerican!

What’s most infuriating to me is that they BLACK OUT GAMES THAT AREN’T SHOWN IN MY AREA! It just seems like a total loss for everyone – I have to believe there’d be some way that MLB and Fox or whoever could divide up the revenue and have it work out for everyone.

I would also like to know...

I’m assuming the week before ST games begin (at least for the iPhone). I sound like MLB and Apple and AT&T’s collective pimp, but I was unbelievably impressed by what I got for $10.

I watched a Cubs vs Braves game while traveling by boat from San Clemente Island to Los Angeles. On my phone.

Yea they usually have all the ST games for the app

Some of them are in real time, most have out by out. Occasionally you get the pitches and a live feed. Once the season starts, everything is in full swing

BLACKOUT QUESTION

I did this several years back just fo the sole purpose of watching the Cubs… I wasn’t able to watch any because of blackouts. Is this fixed… Do they actually show Cubs games on here? I’d pay that $120 if I knew I could see them. Thanks.

If you're even remotely close to Chicago,

then no. And again what MLB considers to be Chicago territory is just as shameful. I was once in an area outside of Illinois where I basically couldn’t see any regional games, as MLBAM considered it belonging to the Cubs, Sox, Reds, Cardinals, Brewers, and Indians. I kid you not.

by Damen Jackson on Feb 10, 2010 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

A lot of Iowa is like that.

Just replace “Reds” and “Indians” with “Twins” and “Royals”.

Stupidity.

Since I'm from Iowa

I’m not even considering signing up. We’re blacked out from watching the Cubs, White Sox, Royals, Twins, Brewers, and Cardinals. If none of those teams are playing each other I could be blacked out from almost half the MLB games that are going on. If they didn’t have the blackouts I would sign up in a heartbeat. What is worse is my cable company doesn’t carry Comcast Chicago so if the game isn’t on WGN I have no way of watching it and it isn’t like I’m going to drive 6 hours to Chicago just to see a game.

by cubfan2201 on Feb 10, 2010 12:09 PM CST reply actions

This was exactly the point I made to management at the Cubs convention.

How they can allow teams like the Twins and Royals to have “territorial rights” to areas to which they do NOT broadcast games is absolutely mystifying.

It might have made sense in the 1970’s when these rules began. It makes ZERO sense now.

Chicago Area....

I am assuming Indianapolis is considered Chicago Area… therefore I should not get because of blackouts… though I do like to listen to WGN radio with Ron and Pat.

The result for ZIP code 46201 was:
The below-listed Club(s) is within the searched home television territory, and MLB.TV is subject to blackout for all regular season live games for these Club(s):

    * Chicago White Sox
    * Chicago Cubs
    * Cincinnati Reds

In addition, live regular season games for all thirty Clubs are subject to blackout during the national Fox Saturday and ESPN Sunday night game telecast windows.

etc. etc. etc.
