Cute surprise!
Good one.
…and aww…thanks for the credit. As a person that celebrates Groundhog and Paczki Day, something as big as a 5 year anniversary was hard for me to miss.

Here’s the first post made on this site. The headline, obviously, turned out to be wrong.

Hmm . . . maybe you shouldn't have linked to that. Happy Anniversary, though
:)
What you won’t find here are Win Shares, VORPs, PECOTAs (and all I can think of when I see that is Bill Pecota, the former infielder for the Mets, Braves and Royals) — if you want those, there are plenty of places in the Cubs Blog Army, conveniently located on the right sidebar, to find those. Not to say that I won’t quote stats when I feel the urge to, because statistics are part of baseball history and lore, and I do have my complete collection of Baseball Registers and Baseball Encyclopedias and Total Baseballs to pore through.
But as I have said often in my other space, there are things that win baseball games that cannot be measured on a stat sheet.

Sigh.
Obviously, this site is enhanced by the presence of Shawn Goldman, who does stat analysis, and I’m happy to have it here.

Just out of curiosity..why are some of the names gray? Are they no longer members?
"Fasten those seatbelts"-Pat Hughes
Gray user names...
… are the users who did not claim their original user name after the switch to BCB 2.0 in March 2008, OR who had to change their user name at that time.
Some users here had to change their user name because at that time, we went to SBN-wide user names, and users who had more “seniority” at other sites got first call. That’s one reason Jessica became “Doggie Stalker”. There was a “jessica” at Athletics Nation who had been a user longer.

baseball.........is Kool Aid the remedy, or the cause of my desire for it
Don't get me started about family rolling their eyes at me.
On my side of the family we have a few goofs that claim they are now BOTH Cubs and Sox fans. They say they are for all Chicago teams. This conveniently started when the Sox won. They don’t understand the rivalry or what the words “fair weather fan” mean and it makes me nuts.
On my husband’s side, his sister married a Sox fan. She was a Cubs fan for the longest time, but slowly went over to the dark side. Again, this was conveniently when they won. My niece seems to have become one of those types that hate the Cubs more than she likes the Sox. It’s sad.
Fortunately my husband, one of my brothers and most importantly my kids are still on the right track. But when it comes to the rest of the family I avoid the subject of baseball like I do politics.

They are posted without the additional tax; the page clearly says: “All ticket prices are subject to an additional 12% amusement tax.” Doesn’t say how pissed off the ticket window personnel will have to be, if they are forced to deal in pennies.
My guess is, that after the first weekend — when you have to buy with credit cards — they may adjust these.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I find this deceptive.
If their point is to show how onerous the tax is than the chart should read Ticket Price $25 PLUS $3.00 for
$12% Chicago entertainment tax. Total $28. Most folks will see $25 and not go to the bottom tax notice. Again if they want to be upfront, since they are pricing them different from every other sports team, broadway theater etc.
than list the TOTAL price, don’t make folks do the math and make them think initially the price is lower.

It has nothing to do with "fair".
It has to do with having a single login for all SBN sites. Obviously, if that “jessica” came here and you were still “jessica”, it would be pretty confusing.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Well when I first registered I wanted cubswin.
If you can imagine, that was already taken. So I registered as cubswyn (I believe). Turning the process of moving back to LA, I either forgot my login name or password. So I just created a whole new name, cubswynn.

Yeah, sadly, THAT guy still hasn't shown up.
I’d be pretty happy with 30 hr/20 sb at this point. Hell, 30 hr/10 sb would do.

Did anyone hear about the earthquake this morning centered in Kane County?
Or did anyone feel it?

I felt it in Arlington Heights.
Well, I heard it at least – a deep, ominous rumbling that I assumed was a snowplow. There was also something clinking in our bedroom, which I figured was one of the cats messing around.
I know exactly what you mean
About 20 years ago there was a 4.5 (?) magnitude quake under the German Dutch border. I was about 30 miles from the epicenter, and have always described it as the Earth ringing at a very deep tone.

Me too!
Congratulations Al!! It’s been a great five years; but when we get that World Championship it will be all the sweeter.
I want my Macias!
Thank You Al...
Al,
I like the way that you run things on this site. I previously posted on another Cubs related site that consisted mostly of non-Chicago Cub fans that had never actually been to Chicago. As a new guy I felt very unwelcome there as most of the comments were constant inside jokes, the posts were all geared towards Sabermetrics, and I was critiqued every time I posted something that someone may have posted about 3 years ago. Oh, and they had some love fest for Matt Murton while constantly bashing Ryan Theriot. It was quite amusing to see Ryan Theriot progress into a decent ball player. I left the site before I got to enjoy it.
On your site, I felt welcome to jump right in and didn’t feel like I was completely out of the loop. Please don’t ever change the spirit of this board. Thank you for all that you do! It’s Gonna Happen…

I’ll have to disagree with you because I feel that it’s very appropriate for those of us that continue to keep the faith. Yeah, I don’t like to get involved with the latest trends, however, I like the saying.

I'm not too fond of the "It's Gonna Happen" signs
because to me it gives credence to the lovable loser image that I’d like to see us break away from.
Also makes me think what’s “gonna happen”? No I don’t like it at all.

and I’d probably have a laugh if I saw one that read:
“What If It Never Happens?”
"There's more to life than profits...like, you know, slurpees and stuff." ~Randy Marsh
I see it...
as a sign of hope rather than a "Hey look at us..we’re happy with being losers. To me it says “Hey, we know it’s going to happen. Have Faith.”

I like the idea of having faith.
But the signs are too much. Also, they’re so 2008.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Ah... but you're not taking into consideration the multi-purpose factor here
Buy the sign in April when spirits are soaring and wave it all summer long. If, come September, the Cubs are out of it, all you have to do is add a “S” and a “h” to the front and you can still wave it proudly.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I agree with katie...those signs make me cringe...
I wish there was a way to stop that stuff till we get to the Series at least but I know there isn’t.
