"Sabermetrics": Word To Stay In Public Domain
A company actually tried to trademark this term -- and it had nothing to do with baseball. Fortunately, they withdrew the claim. Here's what Bill James said about the word that he invented, quoted in Scott Gray's "The Mind of Bill James":
"I would have never invented the word if I had realized how successful I was going to be. I never intended to help characterize SABR as a bunch of numbers freaks."

Clever way for Deep Focus to get their name in the press and say what they do.
File a trademark, knowing you plan to withdraw it…

Maybe, but...
… a year from now, sabermetrics will still be discussed. Deep Focus may not even be in business.
