A Bradley-Free Post: Cubs vs. Padres at Peoria, Thursday 3/11, 2:05 CT
Today's Cubs and baseball notes:
-
Interesting note from Carlos Zambrano regarding the grand slam Pablo Sandoval hit off him yesterday:
"It's spring training. You know how many home runs Barry Bonds hit off me? One -- in spring training."
The Cubs won't play the Giants in the regular season until August. Let's hope the number of HR Sandoval hits off Z remains at "one -- in spring training".
- Here's a column on Nomar Garciaparra's retirement that brings out the old SI cover photo as "evidence" that Nomar may have juiced, leading to all his injuries. But the article also reveals something I had not heard before that might have been the real cause:
Last season Garciaparra told the San Francisco Chronicle that his connective tissue isn’t flexible enough to accommodate repeated muscular contractions, a condition that can be genetic. Garciaparra said his father and sister have the same ailment.
Could that have helped to cause the horrific groin injury that ruined Nomar's 2005 season with the Cubs?
- The Giants' Barry Zito is sponsoring a spring training tour for wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Nice gesture.
- And the Dodgers are off to Taiwan to play an exhibition series with an All-Star team from that country.
Finally, before you go past the jump for today's game info, write your own caption for the photo at the top of this post.
Carlos Silva will try it again today for the Cubs. Jon Garland, who started his career in the Cubs organization, will pitch for the Padres.
Today's game is on XEPE, a Padres radio station, so we may hear former WGN announcer Andy Masur. Here's the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.
First pitch thread will post at 2 pm CST. An overflow thread will post at 3:15 CST.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

One final thought on Nomar's retirement.
Most of the times, articles written on a retiring player are flowery and nice. Unless you’re Dan Shaughnessy and you carry grudges for 6 years: link.
Just remember, always be nice to Dan Shaughnessy.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
A reminder that Shaughnessy...
… is the guy who invented, out of nowhere, the Curse of the Bambino, which never existed.
If he were a Chicago sportswriter, we’d have ripped him a new one years ago.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I interviewed him once, for a class I took
And while he’s a fun guy to talk with, once he latches onto a subject (Nomar is a jerk, or the Curse of the Bambino), he will ride that horse until it’s well in the ground.

And also because...
…the comment section seems a little too empty for my taste. I’m usually not on the ground floor of a pregame thread.
Sorry - can't resist... Bradley made it to the semi-finals of the MVC tourney
…but a 16-15 overall record ain’t getting them to the big dance. They’ll have to be content with hooping it up in the NIT.
Look, it was either a basketball update or a WWII treatise on whether Ike should have listened to Omar instead of Monty prior to the Battle of the Bulge….
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Why did you have to bring HWSNBNinto this?
Just kidding.
At 16-15, is Bradley even likely to go to the NIT?
Not sure - I just assumed if you had a pulse, you made it to the NIT. Have to wait and see.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Go Iowa Hawkeyes!
Oh. Wait. No pulse there.

Yeah, it seems like any "big" team with a north of .500 record
Ends up getting to the smaller dance. Probably going to be the destination of the Illini this year unless they work some major magic in the Big 10 tourney. (Illini alum saying this, BTW.)

according the bracketology they're still on the "Last 4 in"
However, I think we need the win over Wisconsin to head to the dance.
Some things to root for today for Illini fans
Pitt over Notre Dame (bubble team)
North Carolina over Georgia Tech (bubble team)
West Virginia over Cincinnati (bubble team, although a stretch)
Georgia over Arkansas (SOS)
Clemson over NC State (SOS)
Losses by bubble busting teams in smaller conferences
Food poisoning for Wisconsin players? I kid . . .

Go Wisconsin! :)
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Also an Illini alum
And I’m not sure beating Wisconsin alone will be enough. Might have to win 2, or at least make a good game of the second one.
As of right now,
I don’t think I would put Bradley in the “big team” list, which is why I wonder if they’d get invited to the NIT. 32 teams seems like a lot, but a lot of those bids are going to teams from the bigger conferences because they will help ratings moreso than teams from the MWC.
Should have said
As of right now, they haven’t done enough to be in. Some team is going to steal a bid in their conference tournament, and there will be one less bubble spot. Winning is the only way we’re going to get in.
Bradley will probably be in the CBI or CIT
I would think the NIT will be taking the UConn’s of the world, though Bradley might have a outside shot at it if some other teams decline the invitation.

I know its wishful thinking
But I hope Nomar comes out and says that he took steroids. Cause then he can show people the damage it does to not only your body but your career.
Serously, how do you know he did it?
I’m not trying to defend the guy. He may have done it. I absolutely don’t know.
I will say this though, anyone who will go on the record and categorically determine that some certain player did or didn’t take steroids will look like a fool in due time.

I didnt clearify at all
But what I meant was if he did I would hope that he would come out to show the risk you are really taking.
Well, certainly, that would be nice ...
if he did it.
It’s just a shame of the Selig legacy that we have to have the conversations at all. The steroids in baseball obviously have thrown off many of the historical numbers, but also our discussions about these players. In regards to greatness and HoF inclusion, many are determining some arbitrary assignation of “cheater” versus “clean” to bolster or impugn a player. And the fact of the matter is that unless we have proof, we just don’t know. Unfortunately, the only proof that we’ll ever get is guilt, which is sad – so sad.
In the meantime, I’m sure that we’ll still make the assumptions, determine that someone is clean or innocent, and make decisions upon those determinations (i.e. HoF voting) only to find that conventional wisdom will be proved wrong in many cases over time.

You can do PBP if you want.
It is on MLB Audio via the SD station. No Chicago radio.

I wonder whether Pat and Ron just hang out in AZ that whole time.

I can tell you the answer.
Ron Santo has a home there, so probably.
Pat doesn’t, and I don’t think he does.

Sorry
I’ve been spotty in my attention to the Cubs this spring….
How has Soto been playing? I was pretty optimistic about him enjoying a big bounce-back year after losing 40 pounds in the offseason, so I’d love to see what people here think about his play/hitting so far this spring…..he could give a huge boost to the Cubs’ offense if he gets back to 2008 form…
I was going to leave a photo caption...
…but I can’t get over the fact that the photographer’s name is Morry Gash.
