Predictions sure to go wrong

Last week, a fanpost asked BCBers some set questions about which Cubs will improve in 2010, which Cubs will decline, etc. I thought it was a lot of fun, but I thought it might also be enjoyable to have a more free-style set of predictions -- something we can look back on in October to see who among us was the most clairvoyant. :)

No set format -- just make a few guesses akin to what I'm listing below. Oh, and I don't think anyone has posted something similar before. If they have, let me know, and I'll remove my post.

Predictions:

Felipe Lopez will outplay Mike Fontenot.

Milton Bradley will play fewer than 100 games, due to injury.

Kiko Calero will be a bargain for the Mets, and he will be traded near the deadline to a contender.

Marlon Byrd will be as good as the most optimistic projections.

Starlin Castro will be called up in early July, likely the result of an injury to one of our middle infielders.

No one in the NL Central will win more than 89 games.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Being wrong doesn't haunt anyone

lots of people make predictions that fall flat. Al was absolutely certain that McGehee would falter out of spring training and was dumbfounded at the very idea of signing the creaky old wreck of Trevor Hoffman.

by ol Pete on Mar 12, 2010 9:00 AM CST up reply actions

Hoffman did a good job.

I was wrong about that.

But you can’t seriously tell me you expected McGehee to do what he did. No one did.

Fukudome improves drastically from his first two years.

Maybe not worth $11 million a year, but by the end of 2010, there is legitimate debate about whether he should be offered another contract by the Cubs at the end of 2011. Don’t know why, but I just feel good about him having a breakout year.

Cubs are forced to activate "special assistant to the GM" Greg Maddux

When a rash of freak injuries depletes the Cub bullpen the last week of the season and the Cubs are locked in fierce fight with the Reds for the division. On the last day the season with the Cubs up by a game and Reds having already won, the Cubs lead Houston 1-0 ( on a solo shot by Sam Fuld) in the 7th inning. Lou is forced to remove Z after he has thrown 156 pitches despite having a shut out, and replace him with Maddux who retires the next 9 batters on 14 pitches and the Cubs win the division.

There is massive cancelation of hotels in Cooperstown for the HOF weekend in 2014.

Can’t say what happens after that.

Detailed enough for you?
