Split Squads In Different States: Cubs vs. Brewers at Maryvale, Friday 3/12, 2:05 CT

Not only is today a split-squad day, but it's a split-state day. Half the Cubs will take on the Brewers at Milwaukee's Maryvale complex today; the other half is in Las Vegas to play the White Sox tonight. After the jump, some info on how the game threads will work for these two games.

The Arizona Republic reports on how police and firefighters are deployed for safety at spring ballparks, specifically at Goodyear.

Congratulations to the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles, who recently received a top ten award in the AP's Sports Editors national feature writing contest for the profile he wrote last spring on Louis Clarizio, a white player who played in the Negro Leagues in the early 1950's. Clarizio now lives in Schaumburg. If you didn't see that article when it was first published last April, check it out. It's a good read.

And, the photo at the top of this post is from Tuesday, but it's never too late to write a funny caption. Have at it.

Star-divide

Jeff Samardzija will start this game for the Cubs; he'll face a longtime Cubs nemesis, soft-tossing lefty Doug Davis.

Starting lineup via tweet from Carrie:

SS Castro, RF Adduci, 1B Lee, 3B Ramirez, CF Colvin, LF Soriano, 2B Scales, C Hill, P Samardzija

Today's game is on WTMJ -- I always enjoy Bob Uecker, and even if you don't have MLB Audio, that station can be heard in much of the Chicago area. Here's the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

MLB.com Gameday

SB Nation game preview

First pitch thread will post at 2 pm CST. An overflow thread will post at 3:15 CST. This preview is ONLY for the day game. I will post a recap of this game when it's over; that will also serve as the preview for tonight's game in Las Vegas vs. the White Sox.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

After the day game, I think you should go whoop it up with your favorite fraulein beer-serving wench for a few hours and then come back and do PBP for the night game too. Let’s see, 9:05p Chicago time would be what, about 4:05a your time? You can do it!!!

but we’ve been together for over 20 years, just saw the “fräulein” comment. She kinda freaked in a friendly way.

In American English Mrs and Miss became Ms

In German Frau and Fräulein became Frau only.

Fräulein literally means small or minor woman.

my theory on why the "at least 4 regulars starting" maxim is not in effect anymore

With an odd number (15) of teams in each league (Arizona and Florida), there has to be a lot more split-squad games than in the past so my guess is MLB quietly spread the word to teams to not worry about the 4 regulars stuff – just do what you gotta do to get your team ready.
