OT: NCAA Conference Tourney Game(s) Thread

Okay, in the Big Ten, we got Ohio State - Michigan tipping off in just a few minutes - as soon as I'm done with this, I'll get over to espn360.com and fire up that game.  Yes, I have a rooting interest in this game.  If by chance, the Wolverines beat my Buckeyes, then Zeke, you can go ahead and use your Michigan moniker in here and I won't object a bit...

After that will be the big game for many folks here - Wisconsin v. Illinois (tipoff approx. 1:25p).  Later today will be Purdue v. Northwestern, followed by Michigan St v. Minnesota.

Anyway, I figured rather than clutter up the Cubs game threads today with basketball stuff, feel free to deposit all your trash talking in this post.

Star-divide

I know there are other conferences out there - I imagine Kansas plays sometime today, so Dan should be on edge. And I'm guessing we have some ACC and SEC fans out there.  But after the Big Ten, my secondary interest is the Big East where both my favorite teams (Marquette and Georgetown) scored upsets yesterday (Villanova and Syracuse, respectively) and face each other this afternoon.

Let the games begin!!!

I projected them as a 4 this morning...

after today, they’re looking more like a 5.

Besides, it’s past my bedtime…

Michigan has no chance against OSU. I am a Michigan alum and I am

so disgutsted with this team I could spit. The state of athletics at Michigan is an embarassment and I really would prefer that they not be shown on national TV now. The entire athletic department needs a major overhaul right now. It is confusing to me how an institution like Michigan with an atletic buget the size of a major corporation can perform as poorly as they have. Please, just go away.

I submit to you my primer from the Winter Meetings, as your handy guide to the Circle City.

Well since IU is out (shocking)

and Boston College is done (what a craptastic season), looks like I’ll be following Michigan State and Kansas the rest of the way.

As a coach myself, I wholeheartedly follow Tom Izzo’s coaching philosophy (along with Bill Self’s), and this article really captures izzo, IMO.

Are ou talking about the philosophy that includes incessant whining about refs,

crying about getting screwed over in press conferences, saying idiotic things like ’I’ll remember that’ (referring to a dunk at the end of a game), etc…

Maybe you’re just talking about his philosophy of crashing the boards really hard.

Izzo’s an obnoxious little man. Yes, he can coach the game, and yes, he’s had a ton of success. But he’s far from a shining example of how a coach should carry himself, especially in front of the media.

I’ve always respected Izzo’s results, but he is annoying. His record speaks for itself and he shouldn’t have to resort to some of the antics he has done.

More about his coaching philosophies.

Being mentally tough (even if outwardly he doesn’t always show it), team-building, things like that – that’s what I look for more than how a coach acts on the sidelines.

Bo Ryan fan Schwa?

But he’s far from a shining example of how a coach should carry himself, especially in front of the media.

We’ll disagree on this point.

Come on. Even I’ve lightened up on Ryan’s whining about refs, crying about getting screwed over in press conferences, saying idiotic things, etc.

They’re basketball coaches. Let’s agree that both are successful, great for their players, schools, fans and the game and agree to leave it all out there on the hardwood.

by Zeke on Mar 12, 2010 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not talking about riding the refs during a game.

Almost EVERY coach does that. And that’s basically accepted amongst coaches.

I’m talking about the crap he spews after games when he’s talking to the press. You will NOT find Bo Ryan dragging on about how the refs basically cost him a game. Go back and find the tape of Izzo’s presser after MSU lost to UW in the BTT a few years ago. It’s hilariously sad.

One presser from years gone by doesn't make a trend.

And, as someone who watches all of Tom’s post game press conferences online, I can say that what you describe is the exception, not the norm.

We’ve got the wins and quality wins, but Utah and Bradley don’t help matters. Plus, 19-14 doesn’t exactly instill a lot of confidence. 20th would’ve sealed it, maybe a 8 or 9 seed instead.
