NCAA Tournament Selection Show Thread
Tonight, at 6 PM Eastern, 5 PM Central, we will find out the seedings of this year's NCAA Tournament. Good luck to all 65 teams.
For those whose teams are making the tournament, I wish all of them the best of luck. Feel free to discuss predictions, matchups, and your brackets here.
Also, once the field has been announced, who do you think will win the tournament? March Madness should be great this year, as always.
Again, when the field is announced, are there any teams who you think will be in who don't make it?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Go Badgers!
I’ll go with Kentucky winning it all.
Spartans get a #5 seed and make it to the Sweet 16 where they give it up to Kansas.
There you go.
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
Wow. I picket it exactly right.
Now I hope I’m very wrong and we get back to a Final Four. But I know better. Turnovers, poor FT shooting and the tendency to get behind BIG early and then spending the rest of the game scrambling to catch up will doom us in the end.
But I’ve also learned to never underestimate Tom Izzo. THIS is his season…the NCAA Tournament…
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
I never underestimate Izzo
I’m no MSU fan, but I gotta say he’s the best coach in the NCAA. Incredibly impressive.
Izzo (upon learning the seed and game location for this weekend): "Party at Jud's House!"
Tom was referring to former MSU head coach Jud Heathcote, who lives in Spokane- site of the Friday/Sunday games.
As for me, I really would rather have heard Tom say something along the lines of: “OK. Let’s go. We have a LOT of work to do before Friday.”
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
Kansas is #1 overall seed.
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

C’mon. The only thing loosing their last 2 games did was drop them from a no. 3 overall to a 4 which now matches them up against Kansas, the best team in the land.

I still think that Bud Selig was somehow behind this stupid pod setup in the brackets
it’s the only explanation that makes sense
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
So if Kansas is the overall #1 seed...
..that means Ohio State was the last #2 seed, i.e. ranked 8th overall. What a crock…

Unless Kansas State has a monster of a team, Syracuse should have a cakewalk to the FF.
The West looks like a very very weak bracket.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Speaking as a KSU fan...
I could easily see them in the Elite Eight/Final Four. I could also see BYU getting the best of them in the second round.
I agree with you though. I was pumped to see K-State’s bracket, Syracuse aside.
Kstate is good
But if the big man from Cuse is hurt, the cuse aren’t that dominant
then it's a very very very very very weak bracket

LOL
I see them leaving Illinois out. Bruce Weber screwed his teams chance w bad coaching
From the Illinois basketball I've caught in the past few years I have to agree.
The timeout with 3 seconds left in regulation? If you call a TO that late you’d better draw up the best damn 3-second scoring play the game has ever seen.
Also, Illinois has looked completely lost against the press and the zone for several years. A team with good 3-point shooters should not have so much trouble against the zone, and Illinois’ guards should be good enough to break the press (though they don’t seem to have bigs that can handle, which really helps against the press).
As a UIUC alum
I was pleased that they did NOT make the tournament. They did not deserve to get in. Let them go play in the NIT.

They had plenty of chances, lost too many games late in the regular season.
And geographically speaking, they're f#%ked in the rear
Spokane is in the South? San Jose in the East? Buffalo in the West? Providence in the Midwest?

Of course.

Just looking at the 1st round locations and the #1-#4 seeds
West Coast fans get screwed. They get three #4 “pods” and one #3. Here’s how it breaks down:
Spokane – 4, 4
San Jose – 3, 4
Milwaukee – 2, 3
Oklahoma City – 1, 2
New Orleans – 1, 3
Jacksonville – 1, 4
Buffalo – 1, 2
Providence – 2, 3
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
#1 RPI for most of the year...
and finished at #2 for Conference RPI. The numbers disagree with you.
KState could be the best team in the land not named Kansas.
Great schedule and remember, three of their seven losses are to KU. The Big 12 is great this year. Look at the Pomeroy rankings, they’re 9th overall.

Well alot of Iowa fans would agree with you.
But having met him and spoken to him on several occasions, I have to disagree with your assessment. We are very happy with him here in Albuquerque. And I can also say since I work for the University, that the sentiment is shared by most in our institution. Seriously though I just want to enjoy this season, and really am not interested in getting in a pissing match regarding SA.

Its been great for the city, we have always been a huge basketball town, but its been especially nice to see a nice group of young talent play so well during the regular season. I hear you on Alford, I’ve heard the same thing from alot of Iowa fans. I hope in a couple years when he likely moves on that our program is better for having him here. But right now in the eyes of Lobo fans he’s tops. And having been a season ticket holder since I moved to Albuquerque, I’m really impressed with what he has done so far.

KU vs Tom Izzo round 3! We’re too good this year to lose to MSU. And I’m more afraid of Evan Turner in a possible OSU match-up than anything else. I don’t really see how our bracket looks so tough, OSU and GTown duke it out, MSU plays us in weekend 2, and the rest I’m not worried about.

… is that, if the bracket is set up conventionally, they’d actually be the highest #9 seed. The bracket with Kansas should have the best #1, worst #2, best #3, worst #4, and on down.
Interesting I didn't know that.

They don't quite do that because of travel and TV
So for example, I believe Kansas has a Thursday game, so they give the play-in game winner an extra day of rest (from Tuesday) and have that team play on Friday.
For the rest of the seeds, I heard Greg Gumbel say that the committee reserves the right to rearrange by one line in either direction for travel and geographic balance (e.g. TV ratings). Also, they move teams a little bit in order to avoid sending two schools from the same conference to the same first-weekend pod.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
by Invalid User on Mar 15, 2010 8:00 AM CDT up reply actions
But why does Kansas play on Thursday?
Half the teams play on Friday – why couldn’t Kansas be one of them?
Obviously it doesn’t really matter much as no #1 has ever lost to a #16 – I just get tired of the illogic. Evidently, being one of the four #1’s isn’t enough. They have to make such a big deal over who is the overall #1 seed. Fine, go ahead and have your hoopla. But then they turn around and defy logic by NOT making the worst overall team play the best overall team.
And don’t get me started on these “pods”… (oops, too late)
Why couldn’t Spokane and San Jose be the first round sites for the West region?
Oklahoma City and Milwaukee for the Midwest?
New Orleans and Jacksonville for the South?
Buffalo and Providence for the East?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Kansas plays Thursday because of their pod
The Oklahoma City pod has to be on a Thursday-Saturday setup with BYU in it (BYU can’t play on Sunday).
So once the Cougars were sent to Oklahoma City, then that pod was set up for Thursday-Saturday games.

by Bill Potter on Mar 15, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Or to put it another way, who’s driving here?
Do they know what days a pod is set for (Thurs/Sat or Fri/Sun) before the draw? If yes, then no problem, just send BYU to a pod that plays Thurs/Sat.
But it sounds like you’re saying pod dates are NOT determined beforehand. If that’s the case, then I’m scratching my head that a #7 seed determines what days the pod plays. Sure if BYU was a #1 or #2 seed, but a #7? Seeing as how half the pods are “BYU-eligible”, why not just wait until other factors come into play that determine pod-dates.
Would they look at it the same way if BYU was a #16?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I would venture to guess that pods are set ahead of time
This way they can sell tickets in advance. (But I could be wrong – this kind of information doesn’t easily trickle down to us at the bottom of the D-I barrel.)
Kansas gets plugged into Oklahoma City because it’s the closest pod – as one of the top seeds, the committee makes sure they play close to home.

I sort of figure that since geography is almost completely ignored for seeding purposes...
… why not play the games in totally random locations? Heh.
Here I am! :)
We may not make it past game #1, let alone get to KU again.
This year’s edition of the Sparties is just too damn “laissez fare” for me. We’re too careless with the ball (turnovers galore), so-so at best on the FT line (where games are won and lost in this tournament) and we go long stretches of games where we just seem to lose focus (often falling behind an opponent BIG, only to scramble to catch up late utilizing our player depth).
Izzo has lamented all season that we lack leadership. Our best player is sophomore Dramond “Day-Day” Green. When you have a sophomore calling out the upperclassmen on your team for lack of effort, well- you’re in trouble.
Still, never underestimate Izzo come tournament time. In years past, I’ve written some Izzo coached teams off, only to see them get to the Final Four. And I’ve also seen great teams of his get bounced in the first game.
This team is maddenly unpredictable. Advance MSU in your tournament brackets at your own risk. Then again, you could see them in Indy again in a few weeks.
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
I just don't see how you could leave Mississippi State out of it...
they were under 1 second away from beating the #2 team in the nation. If that doesn’t show you are an NCAA-caliber team, then I don’t know what does. Having said that, my final four:
Kansas
Syracuse
Kentucky
Villanova
With:
Kansas over Syracuse
Kentucky over Villanova
Kansas over Kentucky, 83-74
A-well-a Byrd, Byrd, Byrd, well the Byrd is the word.
Easy... they played dog teams in nonconference
Not as bad as VT, but 12 games against teams in the lower 2/3 of D1 is not the way to impress the committee. The committee tends to look at four things, in some sort of near-equal order
1. Which tournament teams you beat
2. Which tournament teams you lost to
3. How many cupcake games did you have to pad your record, and
4. How are you finishing the season
Having said that, if Houston and Washington don’t win their conference games over the higher seeds from their respective conferences, Mississippi State and VT both probably get in. So M-State should schedule Houston and Washington in the future and pound the snot out of them.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

All good points...
BUT…I still say any time at team takes a team like Kentucky down to the wire like they did, they deserve a shot. You are right, statistically they did not match up to a few of the other teams in the field, but you get what I’m saying, right?
A-well-a Byrd, Byrd, Byrd, well the Byrd is the word.
Vermont is playing Syracuse again this year.
Here’s what happened the last time those teams played each other, in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Check out the length of that 3-point shot Sorrentine hits.
One of the guys on that Vermont team (#14) was a former high school classmate of mine, and he and I still chat with each other from time to time.

I miss Brennan on ESPN
Instead they have a guy who broke his NBA contract by riding a motorcycle and foolishly crashed it, thus ruining his career (still bitter as a Bulls fan), plus a guy who stole his roommate’s credit card, got busted, and transferred. Oh well.
And that’s a crazy clip. I remember that game. I thought Sorrentine’s shot was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen…until it went in. Nice that Gus Johnson was there for the call.
Gotta love Gus Johnson
He’s my favorite broadcaster out there. He sure does know how to get in to a game…even if some of his most exciting calls are incomprehensible lol
A-well-a Byrd, Byrd, Byrd, well the Byrd is the word.
Gus gets too excited over nothing at all.
He needs to learn to pick his moments…
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
I like his excitement during the tournament games
but if he was the regular play by play guy for a team I liked, I’m sure I’d get sick of him.
