The End Of An Era: Cubs vs. Rockies at Tucson Preview, Monday 3/15, 3:05 CT
This is the 64th consecutive season that spring baseball has been played at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. The Cleveland Indians moved their spring camp there in 1947, and when they departed for (supposedly) greener fields in Florida in 1993 (only to return in 2009), the Colorado Rockies took over spring camp at Hi Corbett.
Today's the last time that the Cubs will play a spring game at Hi Corbett Field -- their only visit to that venerable park in 2010 to play the Rockies (they'll make one more trip to Tucson next week to play the Diamondbacks at Tucson Electric Park). In 2011 the Rox and D'backs will move to this fancy new complex now under construction on native American land just east of Scottsdale. It will be very convenient to have all 15 Cactus League teams in the Phoenix area, none more than about a 50-minute drive from each other.
Nevertheless, a part of baseball history will end after this spring -- that deserves to be mentioned.
Bruce Miles today has a nice piece on Geovany Soto.
Note: tweet from Carrie has some Starlin Castro info:
#cubs Starlin Castro is OK after hitting his left knee in play in 9th Sunday. SS Hak-Ju Lee is on travel roster for Monday trip
More on today's game after the jump.
Carlos Zambrano makes his third spring start today and unlike Randy Wells yesterday, will try to get through four innings. He will face the Rockies' Jeff Francis, trying to make a comeback after missing all of 2009 with injuries.
There is no TV or audio coverage for today -- so the Gameday link below is your best bet for PBP.
Once again, a reminder: with the change to DST, the first pitch thread will post at 3 pm CDT, and the overflow thread at 4:15 pm CDT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Hi Corbett Field will live on in film.
After all, it’s featured in Major League.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Has HJL played on television yet this spring?
I haven’t been able to catch many spring training games this year. I’d love to see what all the hype is about.

To those without the "benefit" of Twitter:
Apparently, the Cubs bus broke down on the way to Tucson. They have just arrived, though.
Goodness.
Do they say what happened to it?
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Actually, the bus HASN'T arrived:
cst_cubs False alarm on bus arrival. The drama continues. BP in grave danger.
Oh boy.
I hope they can find a way to get to the game.
Those of you on Twitter, please keep the very fortunate people here (who aren’t on Twitter) updated.

eths, I looked up this "Hummel Hummel" phrase
and the “Mors Mors” that tend to follow it.
So while I now understand the origins of it, somehow I don’t think that’s how it’s interpreted today. Can you explain the current usage?
I’m guessing it loosely translates into “Dude!” and the response of course being “Dude”… ;-)
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Its orgins, afaik, are in the dialects spoken in
Hamburg and the German coastal areas. It was used when boats hailed each other and is considered to be very rude. My father, who studied in Hamburg, always had great fun with some other nothern Germans when they ran into each other on Lake Michigan. At the time, he thought me too young for the “rude” interpretation, and he passed away many years ago, so I can’t ask him.
The north German dialects are almost a different language, so I can not really say more about it.

That's closer to what I researched.
The Hummel Hummel part was innocent enough, but when the Mors Mors response involved a verb along the lines of lick, kiss or suck…
…well, that got me wondering. Glad to hear it’s been transformed over the years.

With no tv or radio, how can PBP work anyway?
I mean, if the only online source we have is GameDay, can’t we all just follow along there?
IOW, are there folks who are online here but can’t get GameDay? It’s free, isn’t?

Stuff like this is why AZ...
…is better than FL for ST — And, it’ll be even better next year when Tuscon is out of the picture. If we moved to FL, think of how much more the team would be sitting on buses.

Hey, it’s spring training for their asses too – might as well get used to it.

it's ok
Z, Hill and Baker are there. Z can pitch and bat first, fourth and 7th. Baker will be the generic position player, and will bat second, fifth and 8th. Hill will catch and bat third, sixth and 9th. GOOD TO GO!
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
And
each Rockies hitter has to call which part of the field he will be hitting to before the first pitch.

Was there any doubt in anyone's mind
that Castro was okay? When you’re 19, you’re pretty much indestructible. You can jump off a cliff into a pile of thumbtacks at 19 at still be okay.
Now, once you get into your late 20’s…things start becoming a little more vulnerable.
A friend of mine is spending this week in PHX
mainly going to Angels and Padres games. However, today the Angels/Dodgers game is sold out and the Pads play a night game. I suggested she go to Maryvale, since the place is usually uncrowded.
I forgot the Cubs went to Tucson today. She called me about 12:30 PST and said….“game in Maryvale is almost sold out!!!!” What’s up?
I think I know where most of the Cubs fans went today.
The Cactus League would be lost without the Cubs.
