Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

It's funny how rumors get started, here is a link to one that Buster Olney more than likely made up. I can't see any possible circumstance at this point why the Cardinals would do this deal! Anyways, thought I would be a good conversation starter!

Go Cubs, were only a couple weeks away now gang!

I hope this is wrong...

because I’m still hoping for that Pujols for Soriano trade.

This trade would NEVER happen.

But why is it so unbelievable to think the Phillies had internal discussions about this proposal? If the Phillies believe the Cards aren’t able to resign Albert, they may have thought STL would take a chance on the hometown kid Howard.

I guess I take issue with the OP saying Olney made this story up. Olney is the first person to say it’s more of a fantasy trade than a real life trade. He never said the Phillies actually made the proposal.

Excellent points

It’s really a non-story. I’m sure there were internal discussions, but there’s no way it’d happen.

The way I like to pretend this discussion happened: Amaro said, “you think we could get Pujols for Howard?” And somebody else within the organization said, “nah.” Amaro said, “ha, it’d be pretty cool if we could, though, right?” Then the Phillies’ front office had a good laugh, wiped a tear of laughter from their collective eye and went to lunch. That would qualify as an internal discussion on this trade.

But think about how beautiful it would be to watch Howard in a Cards uniform whiffing at breaking pitches low and away 2 or 3 times per game for 19 games a year? (sigh.)

Right.

I guess I sorta see why the OP points the finger at Olney, because it really is a non-story. Unless they actually made the proposal, why report on it? I’m sure these sort of fantasy ideas are floated out by GM’s and their staff frequently. Probably the reason why Amaro denied it so vehemently.

I agree

with your points above as well, just sounds like a Fantasy Baseball trade to me. But I do agree with what you are saying.

For real

I’d imagine every team in the league is considering how they might acquire Albert Pujols.

A Fans Dream!

It’s like back in the day when they spoke of trading Joe Dimaggio for Ted Williams. I think this is one of the fun things about baseball… fans dreaming about their home team trading for MLB’s best.

Its all for fun.

Honestly, I’d take either one of them and would be happy.

How would you consider it?

If the Phils offered Howard & Happ, I think that would require serious consideration on the Cards part.

by Cubsfan Waveland on Mar 15, 2010 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

and who else.

There is no way the Cards give away potentially the best hitter in baseball for anybody.

A better trade idea

Pujols to Boston, Adrien Gonzalez to St. Louis (and an impact prospect or two), prospects from St. Louis and Boston to San Diego. This at least makes some sense for St. Louis. Howard would make no sense for St. Louis, since he is currently more expensive than Albert, and will be overpaid in free agency for the RBIs he’s already compiled while he gets fat, slow and old.

Of course, this trade idea would also never happen.

by Bradsbeard on Mar 16, 2010 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

So you're suggesting that St. Louis trades Pujols AND prospects for Gonzalez and prospects???

I think you’re living in fantasy land. If the Cards trade Pujols, it certainly isn’t going to be along with other prospects, and it certainly isnt going to be for Gonzalez and a prospect or two.

by bdlugz on Mar 16, 2010 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really

The Phillies just used prospects to deal Cliff Lee and attain Roy Halladay, so it’s not like its never been done before…

The point I’m making is that Howard makes no sense for St. Louis. If the Cardinals were going to trade a 1B for a 1B it would be for somebody like Gonzalez, not Howard. Anyway, this wasn’t a serious trade idea, just illustrating a point. I love how you suggest I’m living in fantasy land, even though I noted that this trade was more or less a fantasy…

Eh to be fair

Halladay is a better pitcher than Lee

Rubbage as usual

Albert Pujols is well on his way to being one of the immortals of baseball. In the lexicon of names Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Fox, Ty Cobb.

Suffice to say, he is NEVER going to leave the St. Louis Cardinals until the day he announces his retirement. St. Louis will re-sign him if it costs $250 million to do so.

Buster Olney is a tool. Another 98 pound sabermagician weakling that ESPN wastes time on. Thank goodness for the MLB Network where at least there is some qualification standards in place for on-air reporting talent.

This.

Howard has zero value in the St Louis market. Pujols is worth more to the Redbirds than any other team in MLB.
