Many years ago, I was watching game of the week on NBC
and the one of the Cruz boys was playing. At some point, the subject of the Cruz family came up and the play by play guy (Tony Kubek I think) talked about the three brothers – Hector, Jose, and Tommy.
Joe Garigiola was the color guy and he piped up with “and don’t forget the fourth brother.” That caught Tony off guard and there was awkward silence for a moment. He finally replied with something like “Sorry, Joe, I’m not familiar with the fourth brother. Who is it?”
Joe says “Why, Caribbean Cruz of course.” and burst out laughing…

i realize the sarcasm, but it at least sounds like a strike em out throw em out
double play, so maybe it was more of a hit and run. probably not Theriot’s call to run.
Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"
Maybe, but when you're as bad a baserunner as Theriot is
it’s hard for me to give him the benefit of the doubt
I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers

It is up to the coaches to send him or not send him. If he always has a green light,
then there is something wrong with that. I remember when i played (granted, it was high school), the good threats almost always had a green light, but if you got caught a couple of times, they took the green light away. if this is the case, it is up to the coaches to fix the issue or revoke his free wheels.
Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"
Sorry, but that;'s simply not how it works.
There may be times when he’s told he CAN’T go, but there are also times when it’s clearly up to him. Hit and Runs would be the ONLY times the coaches actually tell him when to run. He was caught stealing 13 times last year. I don’t think that number includes the pickoffs, or overrunning bases. He was not sent on 13 hit and runs that all failed. He just wasn’t

If it does, and I don't know whether it does or not,
that’s still a very high CS for the number of times he went

No question about it, he's terrible on the bases.
Simply letting you know pickoffs are included in the CS.
The rule on pickoffs:
If the runner broke for the base before being picked off, it’s a CS. Otherwise not.

+1 I am already sick of the Theriot bashing....he is one of our most consistant players
and has been for the last 2-3 years. he stays healthy, gets on base, sure he gets thrown out stealing trying to take an extra base, but you can blame most of that on the base coaches.

seriously, it was a hit and run, and contact was missed, do you really blame the
runner? if it was Lee, Rameriez, Fukudome, Soto, Soriano, or most anyone else on the team, he would have been out.

just because everyone thinks they have more talent than him is no reason to hate.
why don’t you go hit .288 in 1866 at bats and play solid SS defense. average 150 games. and he does have 84 steals against 29 thrown out, i am not saying that is an awesome stolen base leader statistic, but he does have a little more skills than most players, that is why he is making decent money this year and playing for one of the better teams in baseball.

Oh for the love of.......
So if I can’t make a major league roster, I can’t compare him to other players who are clearly better?
The funniest part about your statement, other than the extremely tired “you think you can do better!?!?” is your claim that he’s making decent money.
Yes, 2.6 million is decent money. However, Theriot lost his arbitration, even the arbitrator though what he was asking for was too much money.

everyone asks for too much money. that is what people do in negotiations,
or have you never bought or sold a house or a car.
Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"
Dude.......
not every player loses arbitration. For that matter, not every player is so insanely stubborn that they don’t eventually come down a bit to meet the team half way. In fact, since Jim has been the GM, it’s almost never happened. Theriot was completely convinced he was worth $3.4 million, neither the team, nor an independent arbitrator thought that was true. That’s hardly an everyday occurence, especially on this team.

no, the problem is that everyone on here acts like they are TRUE
Cubs fans, and then they go about bashing the players that make up the heart and soul of the team. and if you don’t think that he is part of the soul of this team, he has been the starter at the most difficult position on this team for the last 3 years. is the the best ball player out there, hell no, nobody is going to make that argument, but he does everything on the field that could be expected of him, btw, i did some math on his success on the base paths, and i get a 74% SB rate for him. I also did some on Maury Wills (since the site i looked up said they were a good comparison at this age) and Juan Pierre, who both had close to the same 73-75%. i would think most people think they are pretty good on the base paths. does Theriot make mistakes out there, get too aggressive? sure. he is the leadoff hitter, and Lou who i believe has a much better eye for talent thinks he is pretty good. sorry for the rant, i am done now. just sick of everyone badmouthing our players, it was Lee the last couple of years, obviously MB deserved some of his. it is our team, let’s root for them.
Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"

Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"
There is a key difference...
… between “not rooting for the team” and “discussing the disappointing performance of certain players”.
I can see Theroit doing poorly while still WANTING him to do well. I can discuss Theroit doing poorly while still WANTING him to do well. I can boo Theroit doing poorly while still WANTING him to do well.

Not to fight you,
but if you read around, it’s pretty obvious that Pierre is not seen as good on the basepaths. I believe you need to be around 83-85% SB% to have those be of value to the team. I dont remember the exact number, however.
And ripping on the Cubs SS does not make anyone less of a TRUE Cubs fan, and if you think that, that’s ridiculous.
There's not one SB success rate you need to be of value.
It depends a lot on when you steal. For example, 1 out and a runner on first you break even with a 75% success rate. (source: http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html and some back-of-napkin math). With 2 outs and a runner on first it’s 73%. No outs and a runner on first, 73.5%.
Obviously the real numbers vary based on who you have batting and various matchups in much more complicated ways, as with the logic of when to walk someone intentionally (a rather long paper was written on that). It also depends on the score and inning, which run expectancy ignores completely. In the bottom of the 9th, in a tie game with 2 outs and just a runner on first you only need to steal at 56.3% to break even.
If I recall correctly, in average stolen base situations you’ll break even at around 70% (players steal more when they’re ahead, etc.). But to really significantly help your team you have to be well above the break-even point, and few players are.
Jeeze fella...
nobody is rooting against Theriot. We’re just not jazzed about him getting put in the leadoff role or his defense. Hell man, I want him to hit .336 and never make an out on the bases, but I’m not shocked when he does dumb stuff.
There is a difference between being a fan of a team and being a zombie.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Mar 16, 2010 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh good, the "you're only a true fan if...."
argument. Are there any other incredibly tired, used up, and ridiculous arguments you could throw out there? He isn’t doing “everything on the field that could be expected of him” unless you take into account that we do indeed expect TOOTBLANS and double clutches all over the place.
By the way, over the last two seasons, Theriot’s SB% is an attrocious 62%. He used to be a good base stealer, he clearly hasn’t been since 2007.

We are used to superstars at the position. Ie, Izturis,Cedeno, Gutierrez, Rey Sanchez, Jose Hernandez, A Gonzalez, Jeff Blowser, I think that covers the last 15 years. Call me crazy. But I’ll take Theriot over any one of those guys. I did like Gonzalez affinity for clutch homeruns however I can never forgive him for the error in 2003.

my totally uneducated guess
would be that silva’s a borderline nutcase not too unsimilar from zambrano. He needs positive reinforcement to build up his confidence. Zambrano has had nothing but positive reinforcement from cubs management (giving him the ball on opening day, etc) whereas Silva had a difficult time getting the mariners to take him seriously.
since he came over, the cubs management has bent over backwards to make silva feel comfortable and excited about coming to work. Might be simplistic but it could be…
by cubsonWGN4ever on Mar 16, 2010 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe all the positive reinforcement is why he came to camp so in shape??
Perfectly round is impressive – not easy to do by any standards.
I just want one decent year from Silva
and I’ll view this as a great trade, especially since we got Millar, the anti-bradley, this year. I hope hope against all hope that Millar makes the team.
