Lou has likely settled on his pitching staff (I fear)
The worst possible scenario has bore fruit as far as the rotation. Sean Marshall, who is proven to lack the stamina to be a starter and is very much needed in the bullpen, has likely wrapped up a spot. Carlos Silva and all of his bonafide awfulness probably have too. So a rotation to start the season of Dempster, Zambrano, Wells, Marshall and Silva. Humbling, isn't it.
Meanwhile, that leaves Lou to force this bullpen...Marmol, Grabow, Gorzellaney, Samardizija (he has no business earning a spot, but alas he will because Hendry has a special set of rules for his bonus baby), and Caridad the wunderkind.
God save the queen if anything should sideline Dempster or Zambrano. Or if Lilly can't come back to 90% his historical level. The bullpen is a nightmare waiting to unfold, unless Marmol and Grabow pitch out of their minds. Which they could do, at least for a couple months.

What was the outcome we wanted, again?
My twelve would be (as of now)
Z, Wells, Demp, Grabow, Caridad, Marmol, Gorzelanny, Marshall (IN)
Silva, Diamond, Russell (In for now)
Shark, Parisi, Gaub, Cashner (/fighting for the last spot)
I have a feeling Gorzelanny will start over Marshall.
But maybe we should wait on the crazy projections? Season doesn’t start for three weeks. This comment is obviously pointless since you won’t listen. I’ll stop typing now.

As long as Silva keeps this up it will most likely be Gorz and Silva as the 4th and 5th starters with Marshall in the pen as the long man. He also said the team has been very impressed with John Gaub (but I don’t see the team having 3 left handers in the pen)

Russell or Diamond
I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of them make the team, both have looked surprisingly good so far. Seeing some newcomer surprise everyone in spring training has got to be one of my favorite things about baseball, it’s nice to be able to root for someone to succeed.

Fool's Gold
Silva is not going to keep this up. His history speaks for itself. I do find it amusing that Castro’s success is tinged by some as being “flukish” because he’s young while Silva’s recent performance is viewed as a great “resurgence”. Don’t buy into it, he’s still awful and will prove that in due time. Ah, the rites of Spring…
"When the day comes with that last winning run and I'm crying and covered in beer. I'll look to the sky and know I was right to think someday we'll go all the way." - Vedder
I completely agree with you...
But with our luck Silva will probably pitch well throughout the rest of the Spring, enough for the team to justify keeping him on as the 5th starter which is convenient considering how much $$ he is owed. Hopefully we won’t have to use the 5th starter for the first month or so, hopefully enough time to get Lilly healthy and back into the rotation.

That's Possible
It’s also possible that he pitches like the pitcher he was before the Seattle contract. It’s been my belief that he’s not nearly as bad as he was the last two years and he’ll do much better in 2010. Though on the down side, that’ll just fuel the inane AL >>> NL garbage.

All Silva has to do is be as good as Jason Marquis was when he was a Cub.
I think he is capable of that.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
C'mon Al........
Really? 12-9 with a 4.6ish ERA? Yes, Silva has posted 14-8 with a 4.21, 9-8 with a 3.44, and 13-14 with a 4.19, but those occurred in ‘04, ’05 and ’07. Guess it depends on if you really believe the news that Silva’s been making adjustments to his delivery that actually are helping……..
Yes, that's right.
His upside would be those three seasons, which are about as good as Jason Marquis was when he was a Cub.
Will he do it? Still too early to tell.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Just curious.
How big a sample size do you think we will need in order to tell what he will be like?
I think by the end of ST or early April is sufficient.

How bout
until he proves otherwise. A pitcher like Silva should, and likely will be utilized ONLY until he proves he has no upside. I agree with Al in that right now, I’d have no problem with him in the 5th spot HOWEVER…he ought to be on a VERY short leash.
No sample size needed for me. Pitch well, you play. Don’t, have a seat.

He'll get 5 starts IMHO to prove himself
If he can have three near-quality starts (5-5.2 IP, 2-3 ER), he’ll get another 5. If not, he’ll have suffer a pull of his dignity in that 5th start and end up on the DL, go down to EXST to “recover” and then do the max rehab at Iowa. After that, he’ll either come back to start once/twice more or go to the end of the bullpen.

You're dreaming, dude.
It’s one thing to be positive Al, but realism isn’t a bad thing either. At his best, Silva was a .500 pitcher, who just happened to be a free agent at the best possible time, when the likes of Carl Pavano was touring cities like he was Roy Halladay.
He can not, and will not, give the Cubs any consistency. A not horrible start once in a while, possibly.

Chances are Silva will suck, but just maybe he will surprise us. If he just produces one average season, then I think the trade works out in our favor. Alot of ppl thought Dempster would suck when he wanted to be a starter again…
I don’t think its out of the realm of possibilities for him to be an average 5th starter at all

Lilly.........
Appears to be tracking towards a Cactus League start and 3 minor league starts, so assume he’ll be back by May 1? Isn’t that prior to the Cubs needing 5 starters?
Unfortunately no - assuming no one goes on short rest, Cubs will need a 5th starter as soon as April 11.
Yes, with the off days, Lou can do some juggling here and there to minimize the # of starts our 5th guy will have to make. But take a look at the schedule – any place you see at 5 games in a row, you’re gonna need a 5th starter. Not even Ted Lilly can change the calendar – although if he got on the equator and started running really really fast…
I count four times in April when we’ll need a 5th starter – the 11th, 18th, 23rd, and 28th. And then not again until May 8th.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Given that, we'll see him either 4/23 or 5/5
If he has the 3 good outings Lou talked about (one in ST, 2 in the minors), then the 23rd. Otherwise, they’ll take it easy and stretch him out a little longer and go to May 5th or 6th and push everybody back a day so that the #4 starter pitches on the 8th.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
by Invalid User on Mar 17, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think he'll use a 5th starter until the 20th.
And if Lilly comes back the 30th instead of the 1st, they’ll only have to use Silva(or Gorz), twice.
What's Really Humbing
Is that nobody has called you on your 10 man pitching staff. You must really want Millar and Tracy to make the regular season roster, dont’cha?

Sliva doing well in spring training is a bad thing
That means the Cubs will actually go through with carrying him on the staff. He sucks. It would be nice if he had the common courtesy to suck right away in spring training so we don’t have to sacrifice regular season games with him on the mound.
75 wins is optimistic with this staff. Optimistic.

I, personally, am comfortable with
The following rotation (once TRL returns):
Z, Dempster, Wells, Lilly, and Silva/Marshall/Gorzelanny.
Pretty much, all we need to do is wait until Lilly comes back, and I think pitching will be solid. If I personally had to pick a fifth starter, I would choose Marshall.
I think this looks like an 85-win team, but that is just my prediction.

I'm curious. How does the claim of Marshall lacking stamina always
seem to rear it’s ugly head when these types of discussions come up? He’s been used as a long man and as a short reliever because we needed him there. I haven’t seen any lack of stamina by Marshall. That claim was floated a couple of years ago, but why is it coming up now? If anyone can cite a stamina difference between Marshall and any other pitchers on this staff, I’d like to hear it.

Its probably related to his better outcomes as a reliever
My guess is that its tough to go through a lineup 2 or 3 times with a fastball that’s really hittable. As a reliever, he seemed to work backwards, using his curve and breaking ball to set up the fastball. I got that impression based on fairly limited observation though.
I could buy that. That makes much more sense. It's really not a matter of stamina, more
of the fact that he realy doesn’t have the stuff to go through the lineup 3 times without getting hit hard.

Carlos Silva is no Jason Marquis
Not even remotely so. That is why Silva doing well in spring training is the worst possible scenario. Now Piniella shall feel compelled to actually use him to start the season. So lets simply flush games down the toilet for the hell of it seems to be the motto.
Cubs are looking at 4th place in 2010. The reasons to be optimistic for the immediate future (i.e., 2010) aren’t there. The thing that may keep most Cub fans going is the arrival of Starlin Castro. Lets hope he’s good. Maybe just maybe he can be what Ryne Sandberg was in 1982 in terms of giving hope to forlorn Cub fans of a brighter future.
What really needs to happen is for Hendry and Piniella to go away, the contracts of Derrek Lee and Ted Lilly to come off the books, Starlin Castro to be legit and the bricks layed for the future. Sort of how like 1982 was a precursor to brighter days to come under Dallas Green.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
The Cubs will not finish in 4th place.
Fourth place would only happen if everything that could go wrong will go wrong. And that won’t happen.
I find it sad that you call yourself a Cubs fan, and yet expect everything will be the worst possible for them, while any possible question marks for other teams will pan out correctly. Not every question mark will stink for the Cubs in 2010, and not every question mark in St. Louis will end up working out.
But hey, since I don’t have “baseball knowledge,” or so you claim, I apparently do not have any idea what I’m talking about.

by drewishdrewid on Mar 17, 2010 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Even further than that...
It’s more like saying that even though the Cards have two terribly injury prone pitchers, there is a 0% chance either will get hurt. Therefore they will win 100 games.
The Cubs on the other hand, saw Dempster break his toe last year, so that means he will surely break his leg this year. The Cubs will win 75 game MAX.
What is so difficult to understand about that?
A number of people here think the absolute worst-case scenario about the Cubs, and the absolute best-case scenario about the Cardinals/Brewers/fill-in-the-blank.
Reality probably is somewhere in the middle.

last year for the Cubs
Aramis was out for two months. Lee was injured. Bradley was injured. Dempster was injured. Zambrano was injured. Reed Johnson was out for over a month. Harden was injured. Lilly was injured. Soto was injured.
And the Cubs STILL came in second, and contented till fairly late in the season.
Let’s keep some perspective, shall we? Fourth place is certainly possible, but it’s not likely.

Great point..
I had completely forgotten about that.
A-well-a Byrd, Byrd, Byrd, well the Byrd is the word.
indeed he was. It was practically a perfect storm for the Cubs last year — Most of our starting position player was hurt at one point or another, except maybe for Theriot (and Fontenot?). Dome wasn’t hurt either, IIRC. So not every starting player, but most of our impact players were.
And we STILL came in second.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
by drewishdrewid on Mar 17, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions
Every team had guys on the proverbial DL
The Aramis one was a big one. Reed Johnson doesn’t count. If the Cubs are really healthy with the exception of Aramis out for the year this season, I think the team could struggle mightily. Saying 4th also requires 2 other teams to perform well which kind of expands the prediction which I probably should have passed on, but hopefully you get what I mean.
way to totally ignore what I said. The Cubs suffered injuries to nearly every sector of the field. Three starting pitchers were each down at one point or another. And Reed Johnson doesn’t “count”? LULZ.
If Rami is injured long-term, it’s not good. But fourth place is very unlikely. For the Cubs, anyway.

With the resources the Cubs have...
…one year of winning a playoff series (7 years ago) should not be the barometer for success.
But let’s look at 2003 and figure out why that team did so well from July on. If you do, there are significant differences in how the 03 club was constructed – compared to 04-09.
Too bad Hendry didn’t hold on to the winning formula of how to put a team together when he did it in 03 (and I still say it was by mistake because they wouldn’t have made the playoffs if Patterson stays healthy).

It's interesting that you would cite the contracts of Lee and Lilly as being keys
to getting payroll flexibility. These two have been extremely productive for the amount of their contracts. I doubt it if the Cubs could replace their production with players commanding the same salary. Ideally, what you would like is to replace these two contracts with players from the farm system who can provide the same type of production. I am not convinced that these two players exist in the current crop of minor league prospects.

Lee will probably be elswhere next year. However, I could see a scenario where
he could be signed to a fairly short contract with incentives. He may settle for something like that depending on the type of year he has. I really don’t see the Cubs going after an Andrian Gonzalez-type guy and I am not convinced that the rumored Vitters to third and Rami to first is the answer. Lilly will probably be resigned.

Vitters certainly won't be ready by next year.
He still needs to have some modicum of success at High-A ball before I start even thinking about moving Aramis Ramirez off 3B. It’s a whole heckuva lot easier to get a stopgap 1B – even if that’s Soriano.
I also agree that Lee could be brought back on a 1-2 year deal.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I don't see three teams getting past the Cubs.
Two, certainly. One, almost certainly. But this division has a team that is obviously not trying, one that is only sorta trying, and another team that willingly employs Dusty Baker.

The Cubs are better than the Reds and Brewers
Too many ifs on those teams. Won’t happen. Yes the Cubs have some. Not as many
The Cubs will finish second and probably have around 86 wins. Not horrible.
Why get rid of Lee? Or Lilly? Arguably the best hitter and pitcher we have. Lee will come relatively cheap given his desire to stay in Chicago. Castro comes next year if not this year. Piniella is gone after this year, bringing Ryno to the show.
The Cubs have a huge chance to win in 2011. 2012 looks even brighter if Jackson, Vitters, and Cashner continue to perform.

Not too big on all the negativity...
I’m real excited about this year’s Cubs team. I think they have a good blend of young guys and veterans, but most importantly, they don’t have any major distractions this year or bad chemistry. Marlon Byrd is having a very positive influence on everyone, Z, Wells, and Demp are looking great, D-Lee and Aramis are getting their injuries out of the way early (grin, I hope) and honestly, I think that Silva is going to be fine. I’ll gladly take a 12-10 year from Silva in ’10, and I think he can do it.
Plus…one more thing…it’s almost time for Cubs baseball, one of the greatest (if not the greatest) thing in the world for us Chicago Cubs fans. I will always love the team, the city, Wrigley, the players, so honestly, I don’t care what the Cubs are picked to be this year. They are my team, and I can’t wait ‘til April 5th when they open things up in Atlanta, and I REALLY can’t wait till I see them in Cincinnati on April 9th. Here’s to 2010, folks! It’s another season of Chicago Cubs baseball!
A-well-a Byrd, Byrd, Byrd, well the Byrd is the word.
I'm curious Mr. BLou, exactly what would be your choice given the
current crop of pitchers in camp right now? I would be curious to see how you would compose a staff based on the available choices the Cubs have now.

The Yankees won 103 games last year without a 5th starter
If Lily is able to make it back in late April as hoped I don’t think the rotation will be our demise as much as the famous Mr. Blou thinks. The bullpen appears to be the major issue as far as I can tell. Hopefully Hendry can sure that up and some of the young guys can be pleasant surprises. 75 wins and 4th place seems pretty pessimistic to me. My optimistic view is that the offense, featuring a more consistent top 2 and a couple bounce back seasons, carries the team until we can acquire some more pen help. 88-92 wins and in the hunt for the division is what Im hoping for.
I dont think
anyone expected the 08 team to win 97 games either.
2009 Cubs Record: 12-6 (11-6 home, 1-0 road)
I know BLou and some others here have a twisted
co-dependency going here at BCB but being pessimistic does not make BLou less of a Cub fan. I too, after having been a fan for parts of five decades trend heavily toward the pessimistic. You get burned enough times and, if you aren’t insane, put up some kind of barrier to the pain. Some tend toward wild optimism and some (fewer on this site – but there are legions of us, I promise) tend toward the Murphy’s Law approach.
I know BLou and others have other problems besides his negativity. Just know that to some Cub fans, real Cub fans mind you, relentless unfounded optimism is just as irritating.

Say what you want about the statt in spring training.
Last time I looked playing the regular season games was a requirement.
What we see now is not necessarily what we will see over the course of 81 at Wrigley and 81 around the nation.
And yet…I guarantee that BLou will find things to complain about. If we did get a World Series title this year he’d kvetch because it maybe took six games instead of a sweep, and offer his own “deep, serious” insight on how he – and only he – would have made better managerial choices.
You know it’s true.

anyone think
picking up David Weathers is such a bad idea given the inexperience of this bullpen?
I would like that...
…because he’s almost exactly the same age as me, and I like to see my generation (still) represented on the baseball diamond. Having said that, when you look beyond his ERA for the last couple of years, he’s been getting hit all over the field. I’ll stick with the youngsters, sadly enough.

You should have seen what happened when Jabooty made the comment in my sig line.
I was over at Acme Packing Company, right after the Vikings lost to the Saints in the NFC Championship, and I posted PA’s radio clip (Link – it’s absolutely hilarious). Another guy over at APC, Rodgers_for_MVP began giving me grief about my user name (when I joined SB Nation, I envisioned only staying at this blog, hence the name “Vermont Cubs Fan”).
As a result of what Rodgers_for_MVP was saying to me, a bunch of other guys at APC jumped on him. The baseball loyalties of those people were 3 Cubs fans, 3 Brewers fans, and a White Sox fan. The Brewers and White Sox fans all said basically the same thing, that as long as I was at APC, I am a Packers fan and should be treated as such.
One of the Brewers fans who came to my defense was Jabooty, and he made the remark that appears in my sig line now.

the idea of throwing Silva to the curb immediately. You are stuck paying him. No one will take that contract. You either eat the money, or pay him and let him pitch. What is the harm if he comes North, has 3-4 decent starts, starts to suck, then you get rid of him. Why would you just toss him away and get nothing, nothing in return. It is just dumb logic.
