Wow. Didn't realize

managers were tested by MLB.

I didn't either.

It was interesting to read in one story about Washington that managers are actually tested more in depth than players, because they are not protected by the players’ union. For example, managers are tested for non-performance enhancing drugs like cocaine, while players are not.

His quote was hilarious:

Washington said he used cocaine only once during the season. When asked if that was the only time he used illegal drugs, Washington said “the drug we’re talking about, yes.”

I am joking about his statement, implying he did it once as a 57 year old.

That is either really stupid or a bunch of crap. Why people can’t see what this stuff is and stay away from it is beyond me.

This does beg a question.

“When asked if that was the only time he used illegal drugs, Washington said ‘the drug we’re talking about, yes.’”

That makes it sound as if Washington has used other drugs from time to time.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

You think that he’d be in the minority if we found out the guy did some other drugs somewhere between 1970 and today??

by bdlugz on Mar 17, 2010 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point.

All I should have done is remembered that he was alive in the 1970s.

Not that he absolutely did drugs during that decade, but a lot of people did.

by Ace Venom on Mar 17, 2010 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

What?

I didn’t comment at all about what the drug does.

Just because he used cocaine, doesn’t mean he did it while needing to perform his duties as an MLB manager.

These guys, like just about everyone, do in fact have time away from work. And in that time who gives a crap what they do, so long as it doesn’t interfere with their personal or professional responsibilities?

I don’t think anyone was accusing Ron Washington as being distracted, or unable to do his job.

by Ace Venom on Mar 17, 2010 6:08 PM CDT reply actions

My guess is that Nolan Ryan fires Ron Washington no later than May 1st

Ryan has never been much of a fan of Washington. This shocking revelation will seal his fate just as soon as the Rangers go on any sort of a losing streak.

And I do hate to bring up race, but people like Torii Hunter and Milton Bradley need to take a look in the mirror when they concern themselves over stereotypes against African Americans in baseball. THose of you old enough will remember the late 70s and early 80’s when cocaine was ravaging major league baseball. And while players like Dale Berra and Paul Molitor got caught up in the mess, the overwhelming majority of players connected were African Americans. As in like 90% plus from what I remember.

The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Meant to add...

Ron Washington was a utility infielder type during the era of baseball…

I'm assuming you are white...

No matter though. Your statement is is as racist a statement that, quite possibly, I have ever heard. Cubs0505 nailed you on that. What could you possibly have to say in response? Oh, and before you start- the 70s? I WAS THERE. So let me get this right… Molitor got caught up? What about Fergie? What about Lee Mazillii? What about Keith Hernandez? No matter how hard you try there is no way you can quantify a claim such as “the overwhelming majority of players connected were African Americans. As in like 90% plus from what I remember.” Now, according to you, Hunter & Bradley need to look in the mirror before expressing their disgust over racism & stereotypes in baseball? Over what someone did nearly 25 years ago? Because some of them were black? If that’s the case, then I’ll just assume you can’t dance.

I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...

And I hate to bring up race

But it’s overly-general and biased statements like implying that drug abuse is linked to minorities that CAUSES the racism Hunter and Bradley complained about.

Also

Dale Berra and Paul Molitor are white. To say they got “caught up in the mess” while in the same breath pinning the blame on African Americans is, in itself, implying racism. Once you can find reliable stats that 90% of cocaine abusers in baseball in the 1970’s were black, I will consider your claim, but somehow I doubt you are omnipotent and know the drug habits of EVERY baseball player ever. If you were, you should have broke the Ron Washington story yourself and earned some money off of it.
