Cubs Reduce Spring Roster To 42 Players

Andrew Cashner, thought of as a possible bullpen arm this year, won't be going north with the team. The Cubs made eight more roster cuts today. From the press release:

The Chicago Cubs today sent eight players to minor league camp, reducing their spring roster from 50 to 42 players.

Right-handed pitchers Blake Parker and Jeff Stevens and catcher Welington Castillo were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Five non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: right-handed pitchers Andrew Cashner, Casey Coleman and Thomas Diamond, left-handed pitcher J.R. Mathes and infielder Bryan LaHair.

Chicago’s spring roster of 42 players consists of 18 pitchers (one non-roster invitee), four catchers (two non-roster invitees), 12 infielders (five non-roster invitees) and eight outfielders (one non-roster invitee).

"Look, what do you want me to do?"

by Zeke on Mar 19, 2010 11:32 AM CDT reply actions

I'm guessing that's to keep his work rate up

Can’t see why he wouldn’t be called up on the quick, unless he fell apart when I wasn’t looking.

Unless they REALLY want him to be a future starter, that is.

I’d forgotten that with all the bullpen drama, they had him as a starter.

Do you mean Andrew Cashner?

More or less what one would expected.

Stevens and Diamond

I thought they may stick a little longer, but I have to remind myself two of Samardzija, Marshall, Gorzelanny and Silva will be in the pen.

by Harry Pavlidis on Mar 19, 2010 11:41 AM CDT reply actions

Stevens didn't throw very well this spring.

Diamond did. At least it appears the Cubs will have a good bullpen at Iowa to call from if they need to.

Diamond's recoving from TJ surgery

and I wonder if the Cubs are trying to ease him back in. The minor leagues would be the best place for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him a little later in the season.

Kind of reminds me how the Cubs handled Dempster when he was coming back from TJ surgery.

Hey, it's a new century!

Sounds like they are doing the right thing

I was hoping Samardjiza would be sent down as well as Cashner

Both need to be starting in Iowa this year

Kinda surprised to see Stevens and Diamond sent down this early though. Would have thought they would be candidates for the ’pen. As it stands now….

Marmol
Caridad
Grabow
Berg
Gaub
Samardjiza/Silva/Marshall/Gorz
Samardjiza/Silva/Marshall/Gorz

I think Berg and Gaub might have to compete for the last spot, and if Marshall and Gorz are put in the pen, it will be Berg

Me too.

But he’ll be with the Cubs…..As much as I’ve tried to have faith in Samardzija, I just don’t have any in him right now……I still think he should have gone pro in football

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Go Pack!

Gaub has not looked good this spring.

I think it belongs to Berg, unless he totally flops the rest of the spring.

Swap Parisi for Gaub

I think Gorz and Silva will be in the rotation unti Lilly returns

by Harry Pavlidis on Mar 19, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't see room for Parisi on this team.

And Lilly may miss only one or two starts.

Don't forget Jeff Gray.

While he may not be ready for the start of the season, he will be soon after. He could play a big role in the bullpen.

No, that's just Capenter working on his release point and focusing of throwing strikes.

I know that sping training results don't mean a crap, especially for veteran pitchers, it

just the thought of his beloved cardinals not being perfect that I was referring to.

That's because our roster is filled with guess hitting hacks and rag armed bums theirs is filled with

current superstars and futue hall of famers. Oh, and I forgot about all of our head cases.

Parisi, Russell, Gray still here?

Along with a potential FA they could still sign.
So 4 spots for Gaub, Berg, Parisi, Russell, Gray, FA, Shark, Gorzo, and Silva (five until Lilly gets back). Which four (and then five) do you send packing.

by DisCUBbobulated on Mar 19, 2010 12:33 PM CDT reply actions

Is Little Papelbon still on the ST roster?

I know he’s not making the team but I’ve read good stuff about him.

Nope

Not on 40 man. Not an NRI.

by timh815 on Mar 19, 2010 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Casey Coleman impressed me.

I don’t know if his numbers particularly showed it but Lou had him pitching in some early innings against ML players and he did a decent job. Hopefully he pans out in years to come as a real deal for the team.

by ak123 on Mar 19, 2010 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

We'll see a bunch of Coleman

Carpenter, and Jay Jackson in years to come. In March, if not later.

by timh815 on Mar 19, 2010 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Here is how my chart has it

Z, Demp, Wells, Marmol, Marshall, Grabow, Gorzelanny, Caridad, 8
Lilly, Guzman, Gray, Injured, still 8
Shark, Silva, That’s 10

Leaving 2 of Dolis (?), Berg, Gaub, Russell, Parisi

Ummmm, yikes. I felt better with Diamond than Dolis, Parisi or Gaub (who I like long-term, just not now). Yikes.

in the last group. Not quite sure why he’s still around either.
