23-22
I've been reading the thread about the above game, especially the December 7, 2006 one in the context of King Kong, #74 on the list of All-Time Cubs.
Anybody know who threw out the pre-game First Ptich, especially those of you who have the video of the Phillies win over the Cubbies in May 1979? I think it was played on ESPN Classic at some point, but I failed to see it.

Ray Meyer
The legendary basketball coach at DePaul threw out the ceremonial first pitch because DePaul was being honored for making the Final Four in 1979. I saw the game on MLB Network recently. I don’t remember the game. I didn’t have WGN way back in 1979.

I was at work.
Had the game on on my darkroom radio, and kept popping out to exchange incredulous comments with the people nearby.
Gotta miss Ray Meyer – he was a class act all the way.
DePaul Basketball Program
I can’t remember the 1979 team, but I do remember seeing the DePaul teams of the early 1980’s under Ray Meyer on TV that did great in the regular season before flaming out in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Joey Meyer wasn’t his father but could at least coach the Blue Demons to respectability by making the NCAA. Since the days of Joey, the DePaul basketball program has been awful. From a purely selfish standpoint, I wish the Big East had taken Memphis instead of DePaul. There is the small matter that the Chicago TV market is seven to eight times as large as the Memphis market.

I was a HS sophomore...
I remember someone telling me during study hall that the Cubs were getting blown out in the first inning. By the time I got home from school an hour or so later, we had us an incredible ballgame.
I remember thinking that Brickhouse was going to have a stroke! Even Boudreau started to get excited.
Imagine
What would have happened if Ron Santo had been calling this game.
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Santo would've been hospitalized by the sixth inning!

I was there
and I have to tell you, I had no memory of who threw out the first pitch. Whole bunch of others thrown, though.
"For the charming if somewhat curious branch of mankind known as Cub fans, spring is a sanguine time.. Every spring holds the blithe hope that perhaps this is the season in which Satan will grow weary and ease up on the headlock in which he has diabolically held Chicago's mightily struggling National League baseball team since 1908..." The ninth spot had a
4.50 OPS in the first inning.
Lersch homer.
Moore triple.
Saw Kong at Scottsdale and again at Phoenix last weekend
He was wearing a Giants cap Friday in Scottsdale (home of the Giants), and a Cubs cap Saturday at Phoenix (home of the A’s). I teased him that he looked better with a Cubs cap, he agreed. One of the photos he was signing was in the godawful baby blue jobs with the white pinstripes. I asked him if that was the ugliest uniform he ever wore he said “definitely”. For a guy who had a reputation of being prickly, he was a real nice guy with the fans at the games. I posed with him and Fergie Jenkins and I felt like I was standing in a hole even though I am a shade over 6’2".
