Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

$14.99 for those playing at home
$4.99 more than last year, still a great deal

What's the deal with video this season?
Will it be select games? All games if you’re an MLB.TV subscriber? Only highlights?
I’ll be purchasing this app regardless (it’s a must-have if you’re a baseball fan).

It's hard to say right now
but it looks like it could be all of them with both home and away telecasts. Also I noticed that there isn’t a free version this year.
I may be crazy but...
…I swear towards the end of last year you could watch any game for a fee of $1.00 per game. According to the info…“Watch LIVE steaming games (blackout restrictions apply)”
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
According to what I read on MLB.com,
MLB.TV “Premium” subscribers who also purchase At Bat will be able to watch games on At Bat for no additional charge. It didn’t sound like MLB.TV “Basic” subscribers could watch video. Also, I don’t think you will have a choice of announcers for video.

I am intrigued by what special features will be available “at select ballparks” as stated in the app.

Not sure...
…but I can tell you AT&T’s service didn’t really let me use my iPhone to text at Wrigley last year, let alone use the MLB app.
I hope Ricketts gets wifi going at Wrigley.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I usually couldn't send iPhone text messages at Yankee Stadium either
But somehow the MLB app worked great. Who knows. I only wish the audio was in sync with the game — I think that’s a technical impossibility, but it would be great.
No kidding. Watching the blackberry users
text friends and get MLB updates from around the league was brutal while I got the error message.
may addition by subtraction be real
I think I read somewhere about AT&T doing something about the horrible service at Wrigley.
And it is absolutely brutal, let me confirm that.

If you can believe this,
squirrels ate the AT&T tower at Wrigley in the middle of the season. I’m not kidding.

Recently a power amplifier blew up at friends ham radio station,
because a mouse had chewed it’s way into the high voltage power supply circuitry.
So squirrels do not sound far fetched.

Meanwhile, four hours later...
…no one at that MLB mobile blog has answered my questions. That’s really irritating. Why do a blog like that if no one is going to respond to comments? Anyway…
22 hours later...
…and still no answer on that blog. I just left a polite but tersely worded comment. Not that I’m expecting much to come of it.

So...
Just so I understand it correctly before I get this…
The fifteen bucks gets you free audio all year, right? Do you get to pick between broadcasts, or are you just offered one?
And as far as video… how does that work? That’s a pay per game?
Last year...
You get audio for all games with your choice of home or away broadcast.
Video worked three ways. Blackout restrictions apply to all 3 and there was only one feed either home or away.
1. There was one or two free games a day.
2. You could get all games if you had purchased an MLB.tv account.
3. You could buy any game for $1
Cool, thanks guys.
The free game a day… do they spread it out amongst teams, or was it generally like a Marlins-Pirates type of game?
While there is the occasional cubs, Yankees, red sox game...
…it certainly felt like there were more of the lower tier games.

Definitely.
And even if the Cubs were the “free game of the day,” you couldn’t watch them anyway because of the blackouts here in the Chicago area.
With that being said, using the video streaming feature will drain your battery pretty quickly. Hopefully you are close to a power source if you plan to use this.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
what about if you have the mlb package
through your cable or satellite provider? do you still have to purchase the web package to get access to video for all games on iphone?

The MLB cable packages did not give you access to the app video, but the MLB.tv does. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, I know.

Is there any reason not to delete last year’s “model” now that I’ve downloaded 2010? I kinda figured that it would just update that version, but it has given me a brand new icon, and last year’s version has stuck around.
Just figured I’d toss it out to the folks before I did anything rash. Thanks!

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
This is just my guess...
but I would guess that the number of Android users doesn’t come anywhere near the number of BB users.
I think you'd be surprised.
With new carriers (Sprint, Verizon) carrying Android since last baseball season ended, especially with the popularity of the Droid, it might be getting close.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
It may be getting close...
…but BlackBerry has been around longer, so I’d think it still has the edge. I’d be curious to see some stats on this to see how it breaks down, though. I wonder whether anyone has done (or is doing) a “smartphone census.”
I don't think it's close. At all.
Blackberry has the business market on lock.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I do.
There are so many companies out there than issue employees blackberrys. It’s just a guess and I don’t have much to back that up with.
Now if you were to ask me who has more personal cell phones between Blackberry or iPhone, I’d say iPhones.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I would agree.
I think Blackberry has by far the most users, with the iPhone second and the Android a very distant third. I too would like to see some actual data on this if anyone has it.
I've posted a poll on the front page.
Obviously, BCB readers are a very small subset of smartphone users, but it will be interesting to see what people here use.

And therein lies your answer… while Android is growing the most quickly, the BB and iPhone have hundreds of millions of more users.

At the rate Android phones are being pumped out, i think Palm has something to worry about...
… but their products have sucked for years anyways.
Microsoft and RIM are safe due to businesses tied in to their systems, and Apple puts out great products. I think we’ll keep seeing Google’s share grow, but at some point there is only so much of the pie willing to jump platforms, and google got in too late.
Dum spiro spero... | Follow me on twitter or else: @andrewjstone.
Android could get people who haven't wanted smartphones in the past.
That’s a way the pie could grow.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
How many people are out there like that?
If google is smart, they’ll go after the youngsters, kids who beg their parents to have a phone in middle school and younger
"Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off." ~ Bill Veeck
Well, yes...
… but those people are also just as likely to be forced in to corporate phones (Windows Mobile / RIM) or seduced by the iPhone. Google is gaining market share, and rapidly… but nobody (save for Palm) is just rolling over.
I’m not sure Apple will break from AT&T as cubswynn thinks, as their exclusive for the iPad went to AT&T as well, but i don’t think AT&T is keeping anybody from jumping on the iPhone bandwagon anyways (no, we do it and then gripe about the service). And RIM hasn’t done much since the Storm / Bold releases in 2008, but its fair to assume they’ve been hard at work on the next generations of those phones…
Google will gain, but probably not enough to warrant their app being the first to release anytime soon. They simply got in to the mobile OS business too late.

Quite different?
Maybe, but probably not for the reason you think. It’s been rumored now that Apple is going to break away from it’s exclusive deal with Apple and make the iPhone available to Verizon. If that happens look out.
I think Andrew is right, I’m not sure how much more of the pie Google is going to get from those well established markets.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
It looks like...
… RIM (Blackberry), Microsoft and Palm are losing share, and Apple and Google are gaining.
I would expect those trends to continue.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Agreed
None of the executives at my company use Blackberry’s anymore. They all use iPhones or Droids. I don’t hear anyone talking about having to go get themselves a Blackberry. There are some too that don’t like change and will continue to use the BB because they won’t have to learn a new OS. I don’t think they (BB) will go out of business or anything close, but people like the newest and coolest technology.

Hacking in and changing some things
Before 3.0 software came out, it had some great features like copy/paste, search feature. Now most people do it to give their iphones a custom look as well as internet tethering, a video camera for those on 3G or older. It’s pretty cool and NOT illegal, although it voids the warranty with Apple
"Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off." ~ Bill Veeck
Tethering huh?
I know the Europeans have that and we don’t. Sounds cool, but not sure it’s worth the hassle.

It’s a godsend. Not sure why AT&T won’t allow it. The phones are clearly capable

You hit the nail on the head.
The phones are capable, the service provider is not. Boo AT&T, boo.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
well
I think what eths was talking about was getting cracked apps. I jailbroke mine for what you mentioned, being able to give it a custom look so it doesn’t look like all the other iphones. Majority of my apps I still pay for but do use some cracked apps if I am not sure if they are worth purchasing. Like paying $15 for something that isn’t what it says it is.
Like having to purchase an mlb.tv subscription to use the mlb app.
Did you have the app last year?
Last year if you had MLB.tv, you didn’t need to pay for the streaming videos. If you didn’t have MLB.tv, you could still purchase each game on a pay per view basis.
I hardly think they are selling something that’s not living up to what it does.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Classically, jail breaking the iPhone means removing some artificial barriers from Apple,
such as no multi-tasking at the user level, no direct file system access via a shell, apps only from the Apple AppStore, etc.
The so called jail breaking of those apps, which are not for free, is the same as cracking any other commercial software.

You're asking for a pirated copy, not a jailbroken copy.
“Jailbreaking” is something legal you do to your phone. Jailbroken iPhones can still connect to the app store. You’re asking for a pirated copy.
I could sort of understand the rationalization of Napster — that the music industry was price fixing and non-competitive — even if I didn’t subscribe to it.
But this piece of software? Is an entire season’s worth of audio for every game, plus real time video highlights, stats, score updates, and condensed games, really not worth $14.99? Sheesh!
Let's try that again.
Still can’t download it for my BlackBerry Storm 2. Signed up for a PayPal account but keep getting error 10812 when I try to log in via App World. If any other BlackBerry users encounter this problem, let me know. I’ve contacted PayPal support about it.

It's greedy that you hve to pay for the 2010 iPhone MLB app even though you already paid for the 2010 MLB.TV subscription.
You need the latter to watch every game on the iPhone app. So, in essence, MLB is charging you twice to be able to watch games on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Not when they are offering the pay per view option.
These are two separate products and I don’t think the MLB is being greedy at all. This app was probably VERY expensive to produce and I think the charge of $15 is very reasonable, considering everything it can do.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
And you are not only paying for the app itself,
but also for the data services which create a large part of the app’s value.
