Will it be select games? All games if you’re an MLB.TV subscriber? Only highlights?

I may be crazy but...

According to what I read on MLB.com,

MLB.TV “Premium” subscribers who also purchase At Bat will be able to watch games on At Bat for no additional charge. It didn’t sound like MLB.TV “Basic” subscribers could watch video. Also, I don’t think you will have a choice of announcers for video.

So...

Just so I understand it correctly before I get this…

The fifteen bucks gets you free audio all year, right? Do you get to pick between broadcasts, or are you just offered one?

And as far as video… how does that work? That’s a pay per game?

by kanderber on Mar 2, 2010 7:15 PM CST reply actions

Last year...

You get audio for all games with your choice of home or away broadcast.

Video worked three ways. Blackout restrictions apply to all 3 and there was only one feed either home or away.

1. There was one or two free games a day.
2. You could get all games if you had purchased an MLB.tv account.
3. You could buy any game for $1

Microsoft and RIM are safe due to businesses tied in to their systems, and Apple puts out great products. I think we’ll keep seeing Google’s share grow, but at some point there is only so much of the pie willing to jump platforms, and google got in too late.

Well, yes...

… but those people are also just as likely to be forced in to corporate phones (Windows Mobile / RIM) or seduced by the iPhone. Google is gaining market share, and rapidly… but nobody (save for Palm) is just rolling over.

I’m not sure Apple will break from AT&T as cubswynn thinks, as their exclusive for the iPad went to AT&T as well, but i don’t think AT&T is keeping anybody from jumping on the iPhone bandwagon anyways (no, we do it and then gripe about the service). And RIM hasn’t done much since the Storm / Bold releases in 2008, but its fair to assume they’ve been hard at work on the next generations of those phones…

Google will gain, but probably not enough to warrant their app being the first to release anytime soon. They simply got in to the mobile OS business too late.

Maybe, but probably not for the reason you think. It’s been rumored now that Apple is going to break away from it’s exclusive deal with Apple and make the iPhone available to Verizon. If that happens look out.

I think Andrew is right, I’m not sure how much more of the pie Google is going to get from those well established markets.

Before 3.0 software came out, it had some great features like copy/paste, search feature. Now most people do it to give their iphones a custom look as well as internet tethering, a video camera for those on 3G or older. It’s pretty cool and NOT illegal, although it voids the warranty with Apple

Majority of my apps I still pay for but do use some cracked apps if I am not sure if they are worth purchasing. Like paying $15 for something that isn’t what it says it is.

Like having to purchase an mlb.tv subscription to use the mlb app.

FYI

Please do not post any links/instructions for illegal apps here. What you do away from BCB is your own business, but do not do it here.

Thank you.

Did you have the app last year?

Last year if you had MLB.tv, you didn’t need to pay for the streaming videos. If you didn’t have MLB.tv, you could still purchase each game on a pay per view basis.

I hardly think they are selling something that’s not living up to what it does.

Classically, jail breaking the iPhone means removing some artificial barriers from Apple,

such as no multi-tasking at the user level, no direct file system access via a shell, apps only from the Apple AppStore, etc.

The so called jail breaking of those apps, which are not for free, is the same as cracking any other commercial software.

You're asking for a pirated copy, not a jailbroken copy.

“Jailbreaking” is something legal you do to your phone. Jailbroken iPhones can still connect to the app store. You’re asking for a pirated copy.

I could sort of understand the rationalization of Napster — that the music industry was price fixing and non-competitive — even if I didn’t subscribe to it.

But this piece of software? Is an entire season’s worth of audio for every game, plus real time video highlights, stats, score updates, and condensed games, really not worth $14.99? Sheesh!

Let's try that again.

Still can’t download it for my BlackBerry Storm 2. Signed up for a PayPal account but keep getting error 10812 when I try to log in via App World. If any other BlackBerry users encounter this problem, let me know. I’ve contacted PayPal support about it.

Annoying that they're charging tax on this.

Guess that’s local to Chicago — it appears to be the 10.25% sales tax. Oh, well.

Got it

for my Hero – no tax on my bill. Looking forward to testing it out (today?) if there are live games w/ audio. Based on everything I’ve heard, I’m pretty excited about this. First app I’ve paid for, so it’s all on you guys if it sucks… :p

Should have noted

no tax here – I’m in Minnesota (Bemidji). Sorry…

no tax here in Nashville

Color me shocked…

The "small world"

stuff, especially in this day and age never surprises me anymore, but I just have to laugh about Sckrambo and his BSU connections and now the Nashville connection (my sister lives there) three posts later…

And I understand about the high taxes down there. What is it up to? 10% sales tax?

Hubbs!

by moose97 on Mar 4, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

around 9.5%

But no state income tax so that helps.

by LT on Mar 4, 2010 1:49 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Question

I assume that I would have to also pay the $14 again to mlb.com if I want to listen to it online in addition to on my Droid. I guess I wouldn’t really need that anymore unless my phone was dead.

by LT on Mar 3, 2010 6:21 PM CST reply actions

Yes, you would.

The At Bat app and the Gameday Audio are separate purchases.

It costs $19.95 this year.

At least that’s what it told me I had to pay for Gameday Audio

Then you're doing something different.

The MLB At Bat app costs $14.95, no matter what platform you buy it on. Gameday Audio is a separate purchase.

I've been considering buying the Nexus One...

when it is out for Verizon.

Any feedback on how well the Android app works would be appreciated.

Looks good so far.

Have not had a chance to check out the audio yet.

Great connecton so far

listning to Pat & Ron on my HTC Hero. Started w/ just over half a battery. I’m curious to see how much a drain this’ll be… Fired it up exactly at 1st pitch, so I’ll update.

Am running ATK, and just have MLB At Bat, and mail in the back-ground. For those Android users that don’t have Advanced Task Killer, go get it from the Marketplace NOW. All that extra crap running in the background is killing your battery life.

Agreed re: "Advanced Task Killer".

It’s the best such app available. And free.

Killed the game

w/ Cubs up 5-1 after 5, and the battery was at about 33%. That’s a lot of battery kill, but what am I to do? All in all, a good experience. I’m getting used to taking my charget with me anyway, so no big deal…

WTF?

Downloaded the app this morning and was looking forward to listening in to the Cub game today. But all I’m getting is “Buffering” followed by “Unable to connect to audio”. Then it continues Buffering. Anyone else having issues? I’m on an iphone.

no issues all game for me

Except the scoreboard was consistently behind by a full half-inning until it just plain stopped when Byrd hit his home run.

It wasn't Byrd's doing

It was actually Lilly’s. He was upset at the scoreboard for tallying runs without his permission.

It's greedy that you hve to pay for the 2010 iPhone MLB app even though you already paid for the 2010 MLB.TV subscription.

You need the latter to watch every game on the iPhone app. So, in essence, MLB is charging you twice to be able to watch games on the iPhone or iPod Touch.

by Fraggin Judge on Mar 9, 2010 11:46 PM CST reply actions

Not when they are offering the pay per view option.

These are two separate products and I don’t think the MLB is being greedy at all. This app was probably VERY expensive to produce and I think the charge of $15 is very reasonable, considering everything it can do.

by cubswynn on Mar 10, 2010 9:14 AM CST up reply actions

And you are not only paying for the app itself,

but also for the data services which create a large part of the app’s value.
