Spring Training Roll Call
I am a semi-regular at Cubs spring training since 1999, but I won't make it this year. I have my 20-year wedding anniversary, a minor medical procedure, and it is busier at work than usual at this time of year.
But I know that some of you are going, and maybe I can enjoy it vicariously through this post and a few WGN broadcasts. How about dropping a note here about when you are going, where you are staying, and what you plan to do and see?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Too bad you won't be there on April 3.
They are playing the D’backs at Chase Field that day.
FWIW, I will be at all Cubs ST games (home and away) starting on March 16 through the end of ST. Anyone who wants to meet up, email me.

i saw that, i am going to see if i can make it to that game, it is one of the few NL stadiums i haven't
been to (just driven past a hundred times) i was really hoping to get there the week before so that i could make some out in Mesa. I have been to the complex a couple of times, but i haven’t made a game out there.

I will be there March 16-23
Too late for the game on the 16th. I will spend much time vegging out at the pool at the Motel6 in Scottsdale. FYI if anyone else is staying in Scottsdale I would love to be able to hitch a ride to some of the games that week.

March 12-20
for me. Staying in Mesa on Country Club, close to 60. I would rather go a week or so later but this is my spring break. Will go to every Cubs game, but not planning on on the long road trip south. Might catch the Iowa Cubs and Sandberg one afternoon. Baseball is all I do while the family suns. Been most places for dinner as this is year 14 for spring training. I want to check out the new mall in North Mesa and might find a place to eat there and then check out Julio César Chávez Campeones, a new place that opened last November that sounds interesting.
Anyone that is in the area or in the grass make sure to stop by and say hi. Al knows who I am, if you can find him you can find me!
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
3/18 - 3/23
Me and my wife and our good friend are staying in Tempe at the Red Roof, we hit up Diamonds (Formally Sluggos) pretty much every evening after whatever games we watch. Usually end up there even if watching Cubs on the road. Be cool to meet up with some BCBers for an after game drink (or more).

Mrs. Beercub and I will be going to all Cub home games as well as seeing the Angels at Tempe Diablo, including Cubs at the Angels. Mrs. Beercub is born and bred in Southern California. We’ll be staying within stumbling distance of Diamond’s with a detour to Don and Charlie’s one night.

3/19-3/21
Bringing a group of 12 guys (have for the last 7 years). Only going to 1 Cubs game (3/19 in Glendale vs. CWS) but 3 games total. Should be a wild time per usual.
Mrs. Zeke and I can't go this year :(
Too much going on at work and we spent our play money at the Cubs Convention back in January.
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
3/26-3/28
Already have my tickets. 4 of us are driving from Dallas. Not sure where we’re staying yet. I’m an outgoing guy and would be a hypocrite if I chatted with you fine folks on here but didn’t want to meet in real life so if anyone will be there during those dates let me know and I’ll buy the first beer. Can’t wait to meet ya Mr. Al!

I just visited a place in Vinita, OK that was on that show…Clanton’s on Route 66. It was great! I get to travel for work to smaller towns so I’m sure it won’t be the last one I visit that is on that show. Right now I’m driving from Clovis, NM to Espanola, NM so if you know any along the way let me know!

This is great. My family always hits up the DDD places along our travels.
3/5 to 3/10
This is my 3rd year in a row! I have friends that live in Mesa, so we stay with them. I am flying out Friday morning (6 a.m.), and I should be there before noon, provided that the connection through Denver is smooth.
It’ll be a long day Friday, so I think an afternoon nap would be in order before any activities. I believe we are going to a Jazz fest in Scottsdale Friday night. Saturday is the Cubs v. Sox game in Mesa, and then a National Football Foundation event. Sunday is another Cubs v. Sox game, this time at one of my favorite parks out there, Camelback Ranch. Monday will probally end up at Muni watching the Cubs take on the A’s. My friend’s company has season tickets next to the visiting dugout at Muni. I would like to go to Diablo stadium on Tuesday, since it is one of the few parks I haven’t gotten the chance to visit.
As far as things we like to do in the valley; we enjoy the food (Los Dos Molinos), the drinks (Mill St in Tempe), and of course being warm!
We finish up our vacation with a stop in Vegas for a couple days before heading back to cold, snowy Chicago.
For those that have never been to AZ for Spring Training…..GO! You will have a blast!
GOING 3/10 to 3/15
Hope to make it to at least 4 games . Weather forecast looks great for the Valley . We might check out a comedy show in Scottsdale . ( Cactus League Comedy with Scott Derenger ) . Gotta think we will be at Diamonds at least one night . ST is a great time have met alot of wonderful fans over the years . Go Cubs !!
3/27 - 28
Driving over from So Cal with a fellow Libertyville HS alumnus that I became friends with many years ago through business in So Cal. Small world! Staying at LaQuinta Inn Mesa West. Diamonds is always a great place though it’s never been quite the same to me since Harry & Steve left. Possibly check out Don & Charlies. Perhaps an early morning hike up Piestewa Peak before heading to Peoria. Patio bleacher seats Saturday and lawn tickets for Sunday. I’ll by wearing my BCB shirt Saturday when I meet you Al. Looking forward to it.

Piestewa Peak is a nice hike.
You can get to the top on a fairly easy trail in about an hour or a little more. Fun, and spectacular views of the valley from the top. Highly recommended.

Thanks
for this suggestion Al! We were wanting to go hiking while in AZ but didnt know where was best.
My husband and I will be in AZ 3/19-2/23 going to the Cubs games Saturday-Monday. We got married in November and hadn’t been able to take a honeymoon due to works schedules and what not – so we’re making this our mini honeymoon. Can’t get much better for two die hard Cub fans!
We’re open to any additional suggestions of places to go/see while vacationing.
Enjoy!
Depending on what you like to do, there are plenty of things to do in the Valley. Here’s another suggestion: Taliesin West, the home/studio owned/operated by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, gives tours daily. It’s in north Scottsdale.

LHS Wildcat?
When did you graduate from LHS? I’m class of ’86…will also be out for Spring Training as usual…left field lawn from 3/27 thru 4/1.

The Arizona Republic
Calendar section has a “Guide To Spring Training Ballparks” that I wish I could post here. It’s not on their website as far as I can tell. Maybe later I’ll see if I can scan and post as a .pdf.
It is interesting and useful inasmuch as it has “need to know” info like the fact that you can’t use plastic to buy food/drinks at Surprise (use the Stadium ATM), some useful parking tips (there is free parking all over downtown Scottsdale and you can take Molly the Trolley free to the Stadium), where are the best locations to get autographs (the new stadiums have specific areas for this purpose) and food/drink tidbits (Maryvale flies in Klement’s bratwurst, including the pork bratwurst and Goodyear this year has the Cincinnati Skyline Chili Dog with Skyline’s family chili recipe.)
Anyway, for those of you coming to AZ…enjoy!
Scottsdale Stadium...

Can't make it this year...
I’ve been 3 years in a row with my wife, but too much going on to make it this year. Hope everyone has fun and enjoys the warm weather!
Thanks for the posts, everybody
Usually, when I go to spring training, I stay at the Dobson Ranch Inn in Mesa. Prices are good, they get great tickets if you book early and just seem to be well run, but not a destination type place. I like to stay on the west side of Mesa, to be closer to the more interesting night life in Tempe and Scottsdale. Mesa is a pretty sleepy town – it would be great if they built up a Wrigleyville-like area around a new training complex. I would sure spend time there.
I like to go to spring training earlier in March, if possible. That is when all of the promising prospects are still there, and there is activity all around the HoHoKam complex. If you come way early, you can catch some fun scenes, like the pitchers taking batting practice (and shagging fly balls, but mostly lazing) on one of the fields in back. Later in the month, it seems like there is less to see. Some of the prospects are gone, and some of the veterans are already taking time off. For some reason, everyone is more excited about those first hacks of the season – at least it seems that way to me.

Oh, and VCF
Thanks for the concern about my “minor medical procedure”, but it really is nothing.
Anyone who has turned 50 knows what I am referring to, and I will leave it at that (just the beginning of the indignities of old age, I’m sure).

Your point about seeing the kids is well taken.
However, you can see them play games at Fitch Park any time in March, and I like the later weeks in March because you see more of the regulars, and also the weather is generally a little warmer.
