Even though his Spring stunk, would he be worth a look in the setup role?

just because a player is released

doesnt mean the cubs should sign them

"The roar from the crowd really fired me up," Burish said. "In warmups there were a lot of signs. One said 'Burish, my grandma is pregnant.' I don't know what that means. I skated by it and said, 'it's not mine.' "

Just think....

Smoltz, Calero, Willis, Gaudin and now MacDougal could all be in Cub uniforms…..almost enough to make me wish for winter to be here again.

I thought it was the Sox that were looking for old washed up players

Who were good 7-10 years ago….

I think there was the assumption that we were looking at him

Because I made a fanshot saying he was being released by the Yankees, and specifically citing that I was not advocating signing him

Exactly

Yet people still made the comments “NO” “DONT WANT” etc

That doesn't mean that we thought you were advocating it.

I didn’t.

But you opened the dialogue. It’s not a bad thing that people responded.

Glad people responded

Just not in the way I wanted

I can’t have my cake and eat it too I guess

Hey Shanghai, at one point earlier in the off season we discussed meeting up at a bar for a game this year. Would you still be interested in that?

No thanks to a homeless man’s Kyle Farnsworth.

His number of times released has now well exceeded his seasons of usefulness.

Jim Edmonds was released ...

and we got 19 HRs out of him. Not saying we should get MacDougal — but guys who are released can have value.

by elgato on Mar 23, 2010 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

edmonds was a decent player

macdougal was never a decent player

dude

What part of my previous post didn’t you understand?

by elgato on Mar 23, 2010 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yabbut...

… you can’t compare Edmonds and MacDougal, just because they both were released. It’s not a relevant nor fair comparison.

by Al Yellon on Mar 23, 2010 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm making a point about getting players who were released, Al.

Unique made the point about not wanting a guy who was released. I’m saying the Cubs have done well picking up guys who have been released in the past.

by elgato on Mar 24, 2010 7:09 AM CDT up reply actions

No...

… Unique was making a point about not wanting MacDougal.

The Cubs did well with Edmonds — and Reed Johnson, who was also released.

That doesn’t mean that every released player is worth it.

Here's what Unique said:

“He got released yet we wanna turn him into a setup guy?”

MacDougal sucks — but I read the comment to mean that we wouldn’t want any player who is released.

And did you REALLY think that I was saying that every player who is released is worth it? I can’t believe that you did.

by elgato on Mar 24, 2010 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Kind of, yes.

You said, correctly, that Jim Edmonds was released but the Cubs got a good year out of him. I pointed out that Reed Johnson also helped.

A small handful of released players have value. On that we agree. I just didn’t think the Edmonds comparison here was relevant.

by Al Yellon on Mar 24, 2010 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

wow

I said “not saying we should get MacDougal” — so, clearly, I wasn’t advocated for him or ALL other players who have been released.

by elgato on Mar 24, 2010 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry.

Didn’t mean to come down so hard — just thought the juxtaposition of Edmonds and MacDougal was strange.

by Al Yellon on Mar 24, 2010 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

My comment

was based on the fact that he was released and the fact — MacDougal sucks.

MacDougal isn’t anywhere near the class of released players like Jim Edmonds or even Reed Johnson.

I simply meant that we want a mediocre reliever who was just released and put him in the setup role? That’s like signing a average player and expect him to bat cleanup for you. If he proves his work over time – then yes, eventually he can be a setup guy. But MacDougal just doesn’t have anymore talent than anyone we already have in camp.

2010 is OUR year.

by Unique on Mar 24, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

that makes sense

I just think too many BCBers are hesitant to look outside the organization after the 2008-09 offseason. But I see what you were trying to say originally.

And so it begins.....

….every release from every team for the next two weeks will be met with a fanpost on whether the Cubs should add him to the roster.

MacDougal

I saw a Marlins-Mets game a week and a half ago in Jupiter, FL… MacDougal came in in the 9th and looked like hell. Not that I’m an expert, but he was the only Marlins pitcher that the Mets had much success on that day.

by dmlichte on Mar 23, 2010 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

Augh !!!!

Why is it every piece of garbage pitcher that gets whacked by his team is offered up as a trial baloon for the Cubs to consider. Good grief. MacDougal is ungodly awful. Just like Dontrelle Willis.

Also, ask Ozzie Guillen what he thinks of MacDougal

The assessment is not kind. A 100 MPH fastball with horsecrap control and a Kyle Farnsworth-like 10 cent head.

Also...

… even in his good years, with that freaky motion, he was an elbow injury waiting to happen. Which, in fact, has happened several times to him.

Yabbut

Schoenweis was once pretty decent

If memory serves he was the setup guy for the 2002 Angels….

He was "a" setup guy for the 2002 Angels.

Brendan Donnelly and Ben Weber were the primary setup guys.

And it’s not 2002 any more.
