I was reading some trade rumors a couple weeks ago about the Phillies and Cardinals discussing Pujuls. Derrick Lee is a productive player, but Pujols is the best player in baseball. What are the chances that Pujuls doesn't end up resigning with the Cardinals? The Cubs should be the first team in line to get him if he becomes available.
The Cubs have the market and money to make Pujuls the highest paid player in the league besides the Yankess or Red Sox. The Cardinals probably don't have the money available to keep him. I believe if the Cubs start out struggling then they should make an offer for Pujuls. The Cubs should trade Derrick Lee, minor leaguers, and Zambrano (maybe?). This would give the Cardinals some more depth for a playoff run. The Cardinals would easily have the best pitching staff in the league. The Cubs could rebuild with Pujuls even though he is 30, Starlin Castro, Aramis, and Soto. The Cubs are not in desperation mode yet, but they need to make a desperation move. The Cubs have aging overpaid outfielders and they are in need of the new face of the Chicago Cubs.
