Say what you want but Silva...........

Has looked much better than expected this spring.  According to Len and Bob Silva has been working hard, has been taking additional practice with the bat (meaning he expects to start), and his confidence is up compared to the past.  Throw in that Maddux has been working with him and I see a possible upside to Silva in a Cubs uniform this season.

On another note about Silva, he is a momma's boy (or so we were made to believe) and having his mom in the states I am sure can only help him (I am speaking as a momma's boy as well).

Today he tossed another good game, and I love seeing him get the batters to roll grounder after grounder, which as Fergie Jenkins will happily agree is a great way to win at Wrigley Field.  If he can be decent (10-12 games and have a sub 4.50 ERA) we will all thank Seattle and Hendry for making the trade.

I do not expect Silva to win the Cy Young, I do not see him winning 20 games, and I dont see him hitting more home runs than Zambrano, but if he can win 10-12 games and have a sub 4.50 ERA works for me as a fifth starter.

He really hasn't been bad. I see upside to him.

And if he does end up failing, Marshall takes his spot.

Cubs need some pleasant surprises

If some of the players we percieve " just taking up room on the roster " can come around , we may see the Cubs postseason . I for one hope Silva can just be ok to good . I too noticed Silva is getting a lot of ground ball outs ..Maybe he can win comeback player of the year award .. Or should I keep dreaming ?

I repeat what I've said many times.

Silva will give the Cubs what Jason Marquis did. I’m fine with that.

but I don’t this Silva can be the pinch-runner that Jason Marquis was. Just a hunch though.

I don't see any way he stays with Colvin and Nady on the roster

with 12 pitchers and Tracy/Millar as his competition for the final spot.

Colvin's got pretty decent speed.

I’m not sure any team can afford to use a 25-man roster spot just for a pinch runner.

I know ST stats mean little towards the reg season, but in Silvas case I believe the confidence he is pitching with is what matters most. he looks like he is in charge and believes in his every pitch. that comes with showing success in ST for him.

Carlos Silva...

… has thrown 16.1 innings this spring with a 4.96 ERA.

The following starting pitchers have thrown as many or more innings with a higher ERA this spring:

Adam Wainwright, Cole Hamels, Yovani Gallardo, Rich Harden, Jonathan Sanchez, Brad Penny and Wandy Rodriguez.

Just to name a few. Silva’s in the middle of the pack. That’s all we ask from him.

Silva is a good reclamation effort, expensive but that money was already badly spent

If he can give the Cubs 10-12 fair starts and pitch 55-65 IP from that spot through May where the Cubs go 7-5 in those games it is a big plus. When Lilly comes back it will be self-evident who goes to the pen, I would like to see Gorzellany stay in the rotation providing the rotation balance with 2 lefties, but whomever gets the outs is who pitches….

Silva might be a fair long-reliever or be there to replace a 15-day stint from the rotation through August or he might be an innings eater for someone else after the All Star Break…or he might be a Marquis surprise.

Watching him pitch today...

I went down to watch him warm up and his pitches had a lot of movement. Rothschild seemed happy with the warm up, as he was nodding a lot in approval. As for the game, yeah he gave up some long outs – but they were outs. He also had three or so balls right back to the mound, weak grounders that were easy outs.

Silva pitches to contact – which means that sometimes guys are going to hit him well. But he also mixed in a couple of clutch K’s today. I liked what I saw today and have no problem with him at the back end of the rotation until he shows that he doesn’t deserve to be there.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

The last time we dumped a problem and got what we thought was bumpkis turned out great (Hundley for Karros and Grudzlianek) so if this is even half that good that would be great.

Sometimes a player just needs a fresh start. Hopefully this will be it. He was very good a few years ago so it’s not like it’s someone who’s always sucked.

But no one else has. I’m amazed at the votes – 2-1 at this point in his favor.

I hope he does do well. But he wasn’t that good when he was good, and he’s been hit hard. The thing about consistently giving up loud outs is, eventually they aren’t outs. If Silva is still in the rotation in May, the Cubs are in trouble.

Al is doing exactly what you are doing

making an assumption. His career has shown he can be successful pitching in the bigs, and it has also shown he can be downright awful at times. This spring he has been pretty good, so maybe it is good Carlos this year and he provides the Cubs with Marquis-like numbers. Marquis had a schizophrenic career before joining the Cubs, spectacularly bad just before becoming a Cub, just like Silva. Here’s hoping Silva can put up Marquis like numbers this year.

If he’s in the rotation in May, the Cubs are in trouble sounds like BLou. Not everything he says is bombastic and repetitive.

A good majority of it is, however.

by Ryno Runner on Mar 28, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Alright, then, I'll expound on it - which he wouldn't do

My expectation is that if he’s still in the rotatoin, it’s because either Lilly isn’t back yet, one of the other starters aren’t healthy or Gorzelanny has failed miserably.

Further, I expect that he’s not going to be effective. As I stated above, he’s given up hard-hit balls consistently, and sooner or later, those start to find gaps or seats.

The bullpen could end up being an asset, but I’m not convinced of that at this point – and so I think that the rotation needs to shoulder a heavy load. If the top starters of Lilly, Dempster, Zambrano and Wells aren’t able to do so, it’ll put a lot more stress on an unproven bullpen and could cause it to be less effective than it otherwise would be. If that comes to fruition, I’d expect the team to struggle.

No, I call you combative

Entirely different words.

Tell me, what exactly about the comment that you’ve responded to is EITHER competitive or combative? You just like to argue with me. Did I run over your dog? Cut you off in traffic? Accidentally bump into you in the hall? I don’t know what your issue is, really – and I think I’m going to stop remotely caring.

Silva has gotten better results than I expected, but he does seem to give up a lot of hard hit outs. Granted we’ve only seen a few of his appearances, but I feel like teams have made some really good contact. I’m glad that he’s going to go into the rotation to start the season, but the team should not hesitate to pull the plug as there are other good rotation options.

I don't get the love for Marquis. (Nothing against him, either.)

I don’t think he’s a bad pitcher, I just don’t think he’s that good either.

Here’s Marquis’ line for 2 seasons with the Cubs:
23-18, 4.57 ERA, 1.42 WHIP

Which is perfectly fine for a 5th starter. Honestly, I don’t think hoping Silva produces at a similar level is all that ridiculous. And while I will agree that Silva’s BAA has been pretty terrible, being in the NL with a pitcher getting every 9th AB should help bring that number down a lot.

by not walking anyone. He sure gave up a ton of homers for a ground ball pitcher. I’m on the road and can’t check right now but I’d be interested to know if my memory is correct or the bushels of homers he gave up challenging hitters with the bases empty were the exception and he was actually a ground ball pitcher.
