The Spring Training Home Stretch: Cubs vs. Mariners at Peoria Preview, Sunday 3/28, 3:05 CT

We enter the final week of spring training today; final roster decisions will be made Tuesday or Wednesday.

This is the Cubs' only spring meeting with the Mariners, who they will meet in interleague play in Seattle on June 22, 23 and 24. Since I know you'll ask about [name redacted], information about this player's status for today's game can be found in this article on the Mariners' website.

Gordo in the Sun-Times has an interesting article on Cubs who are musicians and how that helps them deal with the stress of major league baseball.

And, the commissioner's office has now stepped in to help get a new Cubs spring training deal done:

"They've been here for so long and it's important that they're here," Selig said. "They have a great history here. They're important to the state of Arizona. Times are tough now and municipalities and states and everything are struggling, but we just let the process -- and I'll be blunt about it -- we let it get out of hand. That's when I called all parties and said go home and rest and we'll take it from here and get it done."

From what I hear, this is exactly right. A deal will get done that will work for everyone involved: the city of Mesa, Maricopa County, the state of Arizona, the Cubs and the rest of the Cactus League. Good news.

Star-divide

All Ryan's for starting pitchers today: Ryan Dempster for the Cubs, Ryan Rowland-Smith for the Mariners.

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today. There's radio & TV available, but it's all Seattle -- FSN Northwest and KIRO radio.

MLB.com Gameday

SB Nation game preview

As usual, the first pitch thread will post at 3 pm CDT, and the overflow thread at 4:15 pm CDT.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

…a while back, might have been under one of his other now banned names, when he challenged somebody to a fight on here by giving his seat location at Wrigley (I think it was near first base), his own physical description and what he would be wearing that day. IIRC, he was even going to be there with his wife and kids but was willing to “step outside” as it were to take care of this poster with whom he was havng a rather testy exchange with on the board.

Nady batting third huh?

Interesting… two years ago that would have been awesome… here’s to him getting his stroke back.

In regards to Colvin, where do you see him batting if/when he plays with the big club? He looks like a phenomenal #2 or #6 hitter to me.

What is a horse shoe? What does a horse shoe do? Are there any horse socks? Is anybody listening to me?

#2?

With as many K’s and as few walks as he draws? No thanks. I think I’d bat him 8th.

I was only speaking to what I've seen in limited action this spring

Lots of contact, lots of deep hits. Assuming someone is on in front of him, I thought that it could help get some early runs in. You’re seeing him up close and personal though, so I’m going to take your word for it here.

And I remember Aaron Heilman pitched really well, I even remember looking forward to seeing him in the rotation… shows that ST numbers really mean.

Actually, considering that's where Dome and Soriano will likely bat anyway..

You’re probably right on. WHen he starts in place of Dome, who else wil bat second? Font? That seems the only other choice. when he starts for Soriano, are you going to move the normal #7 guy from his spot just becvause he’s in the lineup. I’m all for lineup consistency.

Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Lilly, Da Gorz/Silva?

So if Groz/Silva doesn’t work Marshall comes out of the pen and one of those goes in? I think Lou has that one wrong, but I guess we’ll see.

That is the rotation.

But something will have to really happen for those guys to get pulled. One of them loses a starting spot when Lilly comes back in mid-April anyway. So they’d both have to be pretty lousy pretty quick to gt yanked from the rotation.
