Gee why would anyone want the best defensive player & best runner on a roster that has not much of either? People keep complaining that Fuld is a "bench player" and a "5th oufielder". No kidding , but guess what, teams NEED bench players and 5th outfielders. What they don't need are outfielders who can't field ( Sorry Al but one Spring Training game with no throwing is hardly proof Nady is remotely viable in the OF). Right now the Cubs bench lacks any versatility for the little things like bunting, pinch running, plate discpline and defensive replacement for outfielders who can't field (and I don't mean Nady here).
I understand Colvin had a sizzling Spring Training and he is in fact a decent fielder and OK runner, but he has exactly 18 major league ABs in which he is 1-17, not to mention his career numbers on Ks Vs walks which is abysmal. People rag on Fuld for having no power, but he did in fact hit .299 last year in 100 ABs. For some reason a very hot ST is proof Colvin is great, but a very good BA in respectable number of MLB ABs is too small a sample size to be meaningful. I get that Fuld was awful batting in Spring Training but only slightly worse than Nady who is coming off major surgery but is somehow given a pass even though unlike Fuld, hitting is his reason for making the team.
Lou already over manages the bench and often forgets he might actually need a pinch runner , pinch hitter or defensive replacement in the 9th and giving him fewer options is going to make this worse. I don't expect to see Sean Marshall in LF, but I would not be surprised to see a few pitchers drafted to pinch run. The Cubs roster has sacrificed a questionable offense for defense and speed. A run prevented is more valuable than a run scored as it is less wear on the pitchers. However Lou has always had a hitters mentality that values power over everything else. I believe Fuld will be back within a month because of issues like those above, but I hope not having him or a player like him (Blanco) does not cost the Cubs games in the meantime.
Here is a reminder of why you want Fuld on your bench. With the Vin Scully call this is my favorite, but if you click below it on Sam Fuld you can see a mess of Fuld highlights including the next day when he had two great catches and two stolen based. Yep who wants a guy like that on the bench.
