Atlanta for the opener.....anyone? Bueller?

Headed down south for the Cub/Brave opener.

Anyone else headed there to cheer on our beloved?  Plenty of tickets still available. (big surprise)  Should be around 75 degrees at game time.

Anyone know of a good bar to hit before the game?  I don't suppose there is a "Chicago" bar anywhere downtown or near Turner.  The area around the park looks pretty sparse for beverages.

Just looking for some ideas.

Thanks.  a lot.  There, that's 75.

Might be...

…heading that way. Probably won’t know for sure until this weekend. I’m in Nashville, so it’s an easy last minute thing. Great bar right beside the ballpark, right next to I-75 and a hotel, that escapes me at the moment. The bar is The Bullpen…a great gathering spot right across the street. Good food and cold beer!

i've never been to The Ted

but i’ve heard from many Braves fans in the area that Turner Field has almost nothing around the park for a place to go before the game.

it’s about 2 years old, but I can’t imagine too much has changed. I wouldn’t necessarily trust the directions, but everything else should be pretty spot on.

there is nothing remotely close to the kind of stuff to do you find in Wrigleyville

Turnerland is built in a lower income area which is trying to gentrify (like the South Loop area did) and is largely residential. IIt’s largely surrounded by parking lots and concrete. There are a few scattered local eateries here and there but nothing like the stuff you see down Clark and Addison or Sheffield. Be advised.

You’ll pay dearly for the booze and chow in the park, which isn’t all that bad, but, seriously, I eat before I ever go to a ball park and politely decline paying $20.00 for two cokes and a bag of peanuts from the vendors.

In the past...

Turner Field has allowed food to be brought into the park, so you can avoid the high priced/ehh-quality food they have there if you pick something up on the way to the park. There’s also a combination KFC/Taco Bell right across from one of the park entrances, if that type of fast food is your thing… I’ve been to games with friends that have each brought a bucket of chicken into the stadium before with no problem… yep it’s the South.

Food and drinks are allowed,

at least water bottles, though I’m pretty sure you can bring in plastic soft drink bottles in too. I live about 20 min. north of the city and go to about 5-6 Braves games (mostly Cubs games) a year and always bring in hot dogs, peanuts, sandwiches, etc. Here is a list of what you can’t bring into Turner Field.

They must have hired some people from the Marlins marketing department.

You know, it’s one thing if fans of the other teams do this. We’re used to it and can dismiss it. But when the other organization does it — you’re right, classless.

Ugh. That linescore and due-up hitters? Definitely forgettable. The game was played on July 4, 2005.

Kerry Wood was melting down .. and the Braves fans were only there because of the fireworks show at the end of the game. Which me and the Mrs. wisely split during. We were in 2nd place, but 11.5 games out LOL. I remember that season pretty well, but definately not by choice.

I distinctly remember seeing something similar happen in Miller Park a few years back.

The fan cam was showing fans in the stands, and any time they showed a Cubs fan, the jumbotron put a Milwaukee Brewers “M” over the “C” for the Cubs. Not quite on the level as this, but still bad nonetheless.

And I think I just went blind looking at that lineup. Ugh.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Goin' to the Opener and on Thurs night.

There’s not much around the park, mostly parking lots. I’ve never been to The Bullpen but that’s really the only bar nearby. The lots are good for tailgating though. This is one of the few games a year (opening day) that the Braves fans pack out the stadium and start tailgating pretty early on. Though it is a Monday and during the day, but it should still be close to a full stadium. Can’t wait!!

I will be there Thursday night

I’ve thought about skipping work to head down for the opener – it’s only 3 hours from here, but there’s nothing I despise more than to drive into and through Atlanta. That’s why I’m going with my church, which has several Cubs fans, driving on our church bus.

Be interesting to see if these guys, who drove down from Chicago for this 2008 game, show back up … and scream all night long the following to Chipper Jones

"LARRY! .. LARRY! … LARRRRY! … LARRY .. LARRRRRY! … You SUCK!"

The crowd will likely look more like this.

I remember seeing the Larry chanters… I went to the whole series in ‘08 a double header for the first two games and a night game for the third… If I’m not mistaken Ted Lilly pitched the third game of the series against Glavine. Jeff Francoeur hit a home run off of Bob Howry and it was thrown back! That’s pretty sad to have a home run in your home park and having it thrown back!

Unfortunately not gonna make it next week…

Cubs @ Braves

I’m headed there from Tenn. There’s only ONE bar & it’s in the parking lot of the hotel I stay. The best thing about Turner Field is the fact that you can EASILY obtain CUBS AUTOGRAPHS…You gotta get there early for LOU. They come into the stadium RIGHT by the bar………it’s always been fun for me. Another problem is the Cubs have an off day there on Tues. Don’t know why they don’t save those for later in the season, when rain outs are likely to occur. (?) Go Cubs! I herd twice today [on XM The SHOW w/ Ron Dibble] Cubs were picked @ 3rd place…………

They all finally show up by the third, chop a little while going OOOO ..OO ooooooo, then head out during the seventh. They really seem clueless most of the time.

During the game I shot the pictures above was about the only time I ever heard Braves fans show any passion. Cub fans starting the ancient dirge “Let’s Go Cubbies” during that losing effort were suddenly and startlingly greeted with “Six Four Three” .. and for about two minutes, we competed. Then the DP hit, and the Cubs ended their final real threat of the night.

But that was about it.

A couple of things about Turner,

They call it “Wrigley South”. It will be about 65 to 45 cubs fans to braves fans. You will get harassed by the fair weather idiot Braves fans, who think that they are entitled to win the WS this year because of the Glory of the 90’s. They’ve never gotten over the Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine era. The stadium is nice-ish. It’s nothing like Wrigley. It’s a little sticky (but you would assume that they would clean it for Opening Day). Parking is absolutely miserable. If you want food, good luck finding it close. If I were looking for something down there, I would head a couple of exits up I75/85 to Ponce De Leon Ave. It’s been called “the fat boy’s dream!” Plenty of places to get some good, cheap food and a beer. Atlanta is notorious for traffic, and Monday will be no exception. There is an insane amount of traffic generated from Braves games, so make sure your car is comfy. That’s really about it. You’ll have a hell of a time. The best is when the boys in blue win. There isn’t a better feeling than singing in harmony “Go Cubs Go!” in the tunnel leaving, and watching all of the Braves fan’s faces. It get’s kind of ugly, and you get a lot of 1908’s, but they’ll just be bitter that we’re one game closer to an October Parade.

Any other questions?? Been going to Braves games for 15 years (they have 1 dollar cheap seat tickets! hahaha)

"Harrased by Braves fans?"

I’m assuming that’s a joke. I moved from Chicago to Atlanta 20 years ago. Been a Braves season ticket holder. I go to most the Cubs games. I’ve certainly seen my share of idiots – they’re the same ones you see at all other ballparks. However, one of the major knocks on the Braves fans is that they are so sickening placid and polite that its hard to tell they are in to the game. Its just the way it is down here.

In the 100’s of games I’ve been to between Turner and Fulton Co. stadium I have yet to see a fan of an opposing team “harrased” by a Braves fan. I’ve been harrased by Mosquitos, nats and the unbelievably opressive sun during a July day game. But never a Braves fan.

Last year...

I was at the rainout-makeup game sitting in the 3rd row behind RF. Around the 3rd inning, some obnoxious guy was just non-stop yelling taunts at Hoffpauir (who started in RF that day I think), and I was amazed at hearing a Braves fan actually heckling an opponent…. until the next inning when Francoeur came out to RF and received the exact same treatment from the same guy… I guess he just hated RFers in general.

by MillsChC on Apr 4, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember leaving that 2008 game and the place rocked with Cub fans roaring

all over the place after that victory. It had been a good hard fought game with a bench clearing dustup, lots of lumber, etc. It had been a great outing and we were in FIRST PLACE.

The few Braves fans listlessly passed by. I was walking with my pastor and our church group and they enjoyed watching me wave a W flag draped around my shoulders and wave a homemade “Go Cubs” sign while I sang with the hundreds of others in the hallways “Go Cubs Go.” I was having fun, son, FUN. I wasn’t taunting anyone personally, just enjoying our victory.

Then some young woman, some vixen with a Buckhead look, with her boyfriend walks past and before I could get out of the way, she reaches up and pulls my sign out of my hands and threw it to the ground and kept walking. I saw her little smirk as she did.

Before reason returned and not even thinking about what I did next, I snatched up off the ground like it was a fallen standard at Iwo Jima and ran up to catch up with her and quickly got in pace with them to lower the sign over her head to eye level. I grinned as she started violently and I thought I saw her boyfriend laugh as I turned away and starting singing “Hey Chicago, what do you say .. the Cubs are going to win today!”

My pastor and my church homies watched the whole thing and were dying. The next Sunday, my pastor asked me to wave the W flag in church to make a homiletical point about standing strong in the face of adversity. AAAAmen, pastor!

Harrassment happens everywhere. So does trash talking. It happens. They’re just “nicer” about it since they’re in the South. During that 2005 game, a Braves fan politely came up to talk to me and I caught pretty quickly that he was, in that typically genteel Southern way, talking trash. “Do you know that the Chicago major league team here is being beaten by a team of farm hands?”

At that time, unfortunately, he was quite right. What do you say to that ,, “Wait til next year?” Oh wait, that would have been the Dark Times. Ugh. Let’s never bring that up again.

When you think about it....

if any Braves fan gives you a “1908” taunt, you would think at least in their mind they would think, “Well, we made the playoffs 14 straight years, and only came away with one world championship. And that one championship was in the strike-shortened year of 1995, in the immediate aftermath of the strike, when no one cared anyway.” Granted, they won several pennants, and a couple of the World Series that they lost could have easily gone their way with a break here or there, but the point is, even with that long playoff stretch, the fact that they could not sell out home playoff games (not even close, in fact), they are in no position to trash talk anyone.

"Don't complain to me about the stormy weather, boys. Just bring the ship into port." --Steve Stone, September 2004

by ctcoff99 on Apr 3, 2010 1:12 PM CDT reply actions

the championship was actually in 1997...

Another reason there aren’t many fans there is because of how poorly Turner Field is located. It was originally built for the Olympics and the stadium had to be built in the middle of nowhere in order to accomidate all of the Olympic traffic. It’s not located near downtown like Wrigley is. Is it the fans fault that Turner Field is located a long ways away from a majority of the housing in Atlanta? No. Imagine driving from the Southside of Chicago to Wrigleyville; that’s about the drive most of the fans in the Atlanta area face.

And it’s funny, the Braves actually have the 3rd most fans in the entire country. According to road attendance the past 10 years, the Yankees were #1, the Cubs were #2 and the Braves were #3. So it’s not like we don’t have fans. Again, if it wasn’t for the shitty location of The Ted, we would have much more fans.

Turner Field also has a ton of walking room. They have a standing room-only in the outfield concourse which is filled with fans every night. To pass fire code when the Olympics were built, all of the concession and beer venders had to be located outside the stadium area. If the fans out there were sitting in their seats, it would look much more full during the games. THere’s also a HUGE kids complex that was funded by Cartoon Network. Nearly all of the families visit that part of the park during the game.

I also don’t get where you come up with Atlanta fans taunting. They NEVER taunt. The only thing they do is the tomahawk chop during rallys. You won’t find friendlier seating escorts in the league either. I went to Wrigley last summer and you cant walk 5 seconds without an usher bitching at you for being out of your seat.

Sorry if this is trolling or whatever, but I thought I’d just give you some info. I’ll leave now.

Actually, thanks for the info.

I was at the Ted in 2008. It was exactly as you say it was. Braves fans seem pretty laid back.

Isn’t the Ted right next to where Fulton County Stadium was? That’s what I remember — saw the remaining portion of the outfield wall in one of the parking lots.

Yep

Part of the main parking lot has the fence and I believe where home plate was as well.

And in regards to fans being laid back, I think it’s similar to the southern style of living; don’t be a jerk and don’t draw a ton of attention to yourself and you’ll be fine. Of course if you go in drunk off your ass yelling “hey f*ck Atlanta and the 20,000 fans they have here!” you’re gonna get retaliation, but that would happen anywhere.

44 bucks a head. 9 rows behind the Cubs dugout. Not bad!

I will be there with signs, flags, etc. Got my jersey, long blue sleeved “Go Cubbies” shirt, my ancient vintage Cubs cap one of my brothers bought me back in 1990 after we watched our first and only night game and lots of pent up passion.

This has been one of the most personally challenging and toughest four months of my life and after the longest, loneliest and most miserqble of winters my adrenals need to gush. Who’s pitching on Thursday?

Yes, “Turner Field bar” is almost an oxymoron, but I’ve always had an OK time at the Bullpen —it’s right across the street nudged from the park, in between the Ted and the expressway. They have a nice deck and pretty good wings.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
