Have a look at what they did to Cliff Lee and Akinori Iwamura.

Not good
But I’ll still take them over the airbrushing Topps used to do in the 70’s. Those were some truly ugly cards.

Billy Ripken says those airbrushes
are the result of some f*ck face.

Shame
how the baseball card business is a mess. I still collect cards for fun and the hope to land some Cubs in the pack. I have a ton of cards, unfortunately I don’t have a fireplace because that is what they are worth. Oh well it is still fun.
I didnt notice
the HK thing at first (granted I follow only a half a team outside of the Cubs – sorry but my Dad is a Yankees fan and so I do root for them – same reason I rooted for Mikey J) but that is HILARIOUS…although they do wonder why noone collects these things anymore
I saw you in that coffee shop, breaking the fifth commandment. Congress passes these things for a reason, Lois.

The really sad thing
is that I knew immediately what was wrong with the Cliff Lee card, even with the low-res image, which makes that faux pas all the more ridiculous when you think about it.
The 1985 Topps Gary Pettis card is still one of the best
The photographer didn’t realize it was actually his brother. And if he’d been my brother, I’d have smacked him hard and repeatedly for making me look like a complete dork.

No really. Everyone is doing a pose like this.
Love it. Almost as good as the glamor shots recently by reds or phillies or whoever.

I think they're nitpicking on Iwamura's card when you consider this old one...
Twins in Wrigley, pre-interleague, with a different uniform on the outfielder….

Or this one.

Same year, Bob Locker — with no number on his back! — pitching in Oakland as a Cub, apparently vs. the Tigers (or maybe that’s the Twins, too).
They should have just left the original photos alone and put “TRADED” or something like it on them.

I like the big "C" on the outfielder's uniform front...lol.

OT. Al I know this is a bit late
But its nice to see your full name on the Yahoo / Cubs main page next to the BCB links. Good move on your part. Soon to be a MLB main page regular?

Do 8 year olds run Topps?
I’ve never understood using an action photo for a traded player’s card. The vast majority of people who collect cards (thankfully one thing I DON’Tcollect) are going to know Lee couldn’t possibly have pitched a game yet for the Mariners when the card was made, so why bother trying to fake it? Seriously, what’s the rationale? Any 8 year olds out there to fill us in?

Cliff Lee is allied with the Mariners. Cliff Lee is at war with the Phillies.
Cliff Lee has always been at war with the Phillies!
Just remember; Big Brother is always watching.

This is probably pretty common...
Most graphic artists aren’t exactly the biggest baseball fans, and wouldn’t know about the patch and wouldn’t take the time to research playing fields and what not. Chances are Topps is under a pretty hard deadline to get cards out, and doesn’t have much time between the completion of trades and their cards going to print to make changes like this… and trust me, it’s not a one or two hour job to do these kinds of changes… still, they should at least have an editor who knows what he or she is doing looking over the finished product before they go to print.
You'd think a baseball card company could find graphic artists who are baseball fans.

I think their new Photoshop is pretty awesome, actually.
I mean, this is the company that gave us Mike Laga in a 1987 Topps PINK cardinals jersey.
I guess coloring his jersey pink instead of just white made it more “Cardinaly”.

unbelievable...never knew some cards were this messed up,
I’m always amazed at the things I learn here
