Mark DeRosa is mentally tougher than the next guy
I opened my paper (San Jose Mercury News) this morning to read Mark DeRosa describe how he was mentally tougher than the next guy when it came to playoff situations. WTF?
The 2008 playoffs have faded a bit in my mind, but apparently not as much as they have for Mark.

"I could fit that ball in tight spots"
hahahahaha
Come visit me inside Wrigley along the Addison side mezzanine fence straight up from 1st base.
I had the same reaction this morning reading the Merc

Yeah....
As much as I like DeRosa, I don’t remember seeing anyone swing from the heels with such consistency when runners were on base as DeRosa. Apparently, he’s also forgotten game 3 of the 2007 NLDS, when he swung at ball 4 with the bases loaded and grounded into an easy double play.

I remember the error - but didn't he hit the cover off the ball in the 2008 NLDS?

Well...take away a windblown HR and call it an out
And he hit .250. Granted, it doesn’t work that way, but he hardly hit the cover off the ball.

I just looked it up
Granted, only 3 games, but 12 AB, 2 R, a single, 2 doubles and a HR, 4 RBI, and a 1.083 OPS seems alright. Of course, that error was pretty huge.
Still, he drove in 4 of our 6 runs in that series, and scored one of the other 2. That’s noteworthy.
Meanwhile, we were stranding people on-base all over the place.

Yeah, and I know I'm not being entirely fair with the "take the HR away" bit
Even though it was windblown.
IMO, DeRosa was a good Cub. I just find the quote silly, especially in light of some of his “tightness”.

I saw him in an interwiew with the Giants....didn't say too much on that either
he’s just nice to look at now ;)
The error ...
was more than pretty huge. it was probably the most important point in the entire series. Any chance the Cubs had to come back in Game 2 (and Game 3) was lost.
Derrek Lee's error on the very next play didn't help matters, either.
Obviously, both plays allowed for Russell Martin’s dagger later in the inning.

right ...
but the floodgates opened on the DeRo error.
Wasn't that just the first run?
There was 1 out, 1st and 3rd. Then DeRo booted an easy double play that would have ended the inning, allowing a run to score, 1-0 LA, runners at 1st and 2nd.
Then Lee booted a ground ball (granted, a trickier double play) that ALSO would have ended the inning, bases are now loaded.
Statistically, both of those errors caused the Cubs Win expectancy to drop by 6%.
Then a Z strikeout, 2 outs, bases still loaded.
Then, of all things, a 2-out suicide squeeze that catches the Cubs completely off guard. Bases STILL loaded, another run scores. 2-0 LA.
Then the Russell Martin bomb, 5-0 LA, and the rout was on.
I know that the DeRosa boot was the worst error in the inning, but the Cubs get out relatively unscathed if Lee doesn’t make HIS error, or if the team isn’t caught napping on Furcal’s 2-out bunt.
What I’m getting at is that it’s not fair to say that the “floodgates opened” on DeRo’s error when that only made it 1-0, an error was committed on a doubleplay ball by the very next batter, and the team proceeded to totally botch bunt coverage three batters later. Even if Lee can’t turn that DP, the inning ends 1-0 if he gets just one out. The floodgates didn’t open until 4 batters later, at which point 2 equally compelling additional defensive lapses had happened.
It was generally a knuckleheaded inning, and there is lots and lots of blame to go around, (primarily shared by DeRo and Lee), but also by the team getting caught flat-footed on an unexpected 2-out bunt.

wow
how the mighty fall…Can we PLEASE move on from 2008? We need to focus on hos good this years team is and the incredible depth that we have. Position battles in the middle infield, starting rotation, outfield, and bullpen portend good things. I personally feel this team will win 100+ games or go under 500…

Just kidding. I don’t dwell on this stuff. Like I said, it was served up in my morning paper.
I like DeRo as much as the next guy, but I would think from his comments that he had lifted the rest of the team up on his shoulders during the playoffs, when that is not the way I remember it. Remember Will Clark and Mark Grace during the 1989 playoffs? Those performances were worth bragging about — although I admit that there was a lot of crappy pitching to blame in that case.

Some men learn through what they read. Some men learn through what they're told. Some men have to piss on the railroad tracks. And some men keep on pissin'.
For a guy who is mentally tough in the playoffs, he's something like 0 for his last 10 games.
I mean, I know it’s a team sport. And I know he’s hit really, really well in the playoffs. And hey, maybe he’s seen his teammates tighten up and choke first-hand these last 4 trips to the playoffs.
But it seems a bit odd to do any bragging about your playoff skills when you are riding a 10-game losing streak.
