Poll: A question of BCB etiquette
In today's Overflow Thread, Schwa and I were discussing the etiquette of posting Jump links within threads. Here's a link to the beginning of the meaningful part of the debate.
Essentially, the question boils down to whether Jump links to Overflow threads should open the new thread in a new window or tab or if they should just open the new conversation in the same window.
In the future, how would you like your Overflow links to open: New window or the same window? Note that there's not an option for "Get a life, you two", since I'm certain that would win hands-down :)
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Poll text is slightly misleading in that tabs are not an option in SBN
I wish they were because having it open in a new tab would be the best option, imo. But the way SBN is currently constructed, it’s limited only to new/same window.

Firefox creates those new window requests in new tabs instead
Not sure about the other major browsers, but this is how I prefer the jump links to behave.
Chrome also opens new window requests in a new tab
If it opened new windows all the time, there would be no need for the poll – there’s no way I’d ever tick the little box.

are you sure?
I’m using Firefox and when I clicked on the Jump link today, it opened in a brand new window. Maybe it’s a Firefox setting issue. Lemme check…

Yep - Firefox, Preferences, Tabs...
…lets you control whether a new page opens in a new window or a new tab.
Excellent! Wonder what else Firefox can do that I haven’t figured out yet – maybe there’s an Unrec setting in there somewhere… ;-)

Any link should always bring up a new window.
My pet peeve is clicking a link before having read all the new comments, then when I click the back button to revisit the comments page, it opens without having the comments I’ve already read marked as read, so I have to figure out where the heck I was when I got to the link. It’s a small thing, but it honestly annoys me to no end.

Well, there are a few easy ways to open links in new tabs yourself:
If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can click on a link with the scroll wheel and it will open in a new tab (at least in Firefox on Windows XP it will).
Or you can control/command + click on a link to do the same.
Unfortunately, there’s no option to open a link in the same window.

On my Mac, I usually right click on the link and choose
“Open Link In New Window,” but it’s a Mighty Mouse, so it doesn’t have a true second button, so sometimes it left-clicks when I want to right-click and vice-versa. I really have to be more careful.

As someone else who uses a Mac (at home),
Doesn’t Ctrl-Click work as a right click? I know, I’ve left-clicked when I was intending to right-click on too many occasions to remember.

Wow.
I just realized you quote Randy Marsh in your sig. That’s amazing. Without threadjacking a post that I actually care about, I want to say that he’s easily in my list of the top 5 television/movie characters of all-time. In no particular order: Randy Marsh, Steven (the Irishman) from Braveheart, Red from Shawshank, John Locke from LOST and George Costanza.
Follow me on Twitter: @brandonrifkin
You got two of my top five there, too.
Marsh and Costanza.

Locke is climbing quickly on my list
If you count this season as being “Locke”. He is badass
Marsh is amazing. The little league episode is one of my favorites because of him.

You can't count this season as being "Locke".
Although things ARE getting a little confusing on that front…

Generally I agree with you
but for overflow tabs, generally I’ll “JUMP” when I’m done with the previous page. When I’m browsing on the phone, opening an extra window kinda chews up resources.
Remember, you can always request that a link go into a new tab/window by doing right-click on the link.
This phone point REALLY can't be overlooked.
Jumps opening in new windows beyond my control on a mobile browser is annoying.

That's something else that can be changed
I believe that if you don’t specify the name of the site in the A HREF code, it will take you to the version of the page which is consistent with the version of the site you were using previously.
http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2010/3/8/1362313/overflow-thread-cubs-vs-athletics should take you to the Overflow page for today
/2010/3/8/1362313/overflow-thread-cubs-vs-athletics should do the same, but work whether you’re using the full or mobile version of the site.

Have used it on occasion in Wrigley.
Sometimes during rain postponements, the best way to get an idea of a possible start time is BCBers weather analysis. :-)

Well, in my experiences...
… its been in game threads that are slow due to the rain delay, and i’ve been generally in a bar instead, waiting for the game to start.
Inside Wrigley itself, there is actually a wifi signal you can grab if you sit up at the top of the bleachers on the waveland side. I’m guilty of using that to check in from time to time… i generally like to sit in that area if i’m out there anyways.

I’m not judging. I wonder if the person who owns that open router wonders why their connection gets so slow during games.
I think it might actually be one of the rooftops or something.
It seemed business oriented, but i don’t remember for sure. The winter has frozen the details out of my mind.

Pretty much what I was going to say

I apologize if I ever did that to you or anyone else.
I am so dumb I didn’t notice that there was a choice for opening a new window until now. Yes, I know it’s glaringly obvious how to do so. I feel incredibly stupid. I promise to always check that box in the future. Sorry everyone.

I think they mean the difference between
a nice link like this which has it’s own window
or
a bad link like this that doesn’t. When you go back to the thread from a link that doesn’t open a new window, you’ve lost all your unmarked comments and it can be hard to find where you left off.
Hopefully I got that right this time or this will really not make sense. Oh-and did you really not know what they were talking about or were you just kidding?

LOL..... katie you crack me up...nice choice of pics....and I like the good and the bad angle
I dont have to know any of that right? cuz I dont ever open any windows
Not even in the springtime?

Just FYI
When I do links OFF the site, I always make them open in a new window/tab. If I do links WITHIN the site, I keep them in the same window/tab.
I understand this is a personal preference and with game threads, I can see why you’d want a new window.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
This is how i advocated doing it earlier in the thread that started this whole debate...
… and i believe is something of an internet standard, or unspoken rule, or perhaps just common sense among those that write on sites with this sort of conundrum.

I prefer to open links in a new window/tab.
If for no other reason than when I click on a link and it opens in the same tab, if I want to go back to the original page, it reverts to the way it looked before I started reading it.
If I open the link in another window/tab, this way, even if they are two different threads in this site, I don’t lose any of the conversation in the first thread.
Just my personal preference.

That may be my least-favorite SBN feature
There should be a way to specify that you want the server to remember which comments have been marked as read and which have not even when you close/navigate away from a page. As it stands, the moment you leave that page, whether by closing its window or navigating away from it, the server assumes that you have read every comment extant at that time and marks them all as read by default. It does the Shift-A thing for you.
One of the first things people figure out is the utility of their Z key here, but no one realizes that it’s futile once you leave the page until it’s too late.
Perhaps I’ll make a feature request to SBN support. While I’m at it, I’ll add a request for a “Mark all (or some) comments as unread” feature, too.

if it's not set to open in a new window automatically
any user can FORCE it to open in a same window with right/click or command-click for Macs.
There’s no option for “open in same window” when it’s set to open in a new one. Have the link configured to open in the same window, and then people can choose to open it in a new one. That provides the most options.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
My rationale there is that a lot of people may not know about that option in their browser
I’m very used to Ctrl-clicking for links to open in new tabs, especially if they’re in the middle of something I wish to keep reading. In the past, I have built up an entire afternoon’s reading in this fashion without realizing it (and more than once, too). It’s a powerful feature, but it’s not one I’m sure that everyone knows about.
"Who ever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" -Frank Chance
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
Use it the same way.
I eventually built a del.ic.ious “to be read” tag and just started tossing everything in there so it wouldn’t get to 5PM and i’d look up and realize i had an hour of reading i was interested in.

What's the Jump Rule for?
Is there a certain point (# of Posts)where the thread is maxed out? 500-ish? Or is the Jump just a matter of convenience on BCB? Not having to scroll so far down.
"On offense, your most precious possessions are your 27 outs" - Earl Weaver
Overflows post automatically after a certain time period
Usually around 60-75 minutes after the last thread was posted. If the game goes long or into extra innings, posters will create their own Overflow Threads as FanShots to keep the conversation going.
Game Threads are expected to be near real-time – conversations take place quickly and new threads in them are starting all the time. The reason for Overflow Threads is that most people’s browsers start to slow down with a large number of comments being posted. A Game Thread can generate around 300-350 comments an hour. Once a thread gets that large, people start complaining about it being sluggish and unresponsive – ie, their new comments don’t post immediately and others’ posts show up later than expected (2-3 minutes after they were written). So we all jump over to a fresh thread to regain some speed.

One more thing - browser differences
I am at work and using Firefox 3.5.8, I can’t see the picture for the Overflow Thread. Today, all I saw was “Didn’t we just get here? Click the pic to” and that’s it.
Then I checked in IE 6.0 and I see the Red X for the pic.
