Review: MLB The Show 2010

Mlb_2010_medium

via media.gameplaybook.com

One of the best overall sport games in it's current generation -- Sony's MLB: The Show returns for another year, with high expectations and for another year -- it's meets and exceeds expectation. The problem that many face with the series is that it is only featured for the Sony products (PS3, PS2, PSP) and many XBOX and Wii baseball fanatics are stuck with the mediocre MLB2K series. If your a true baseball gamer, like myself, it's almost worth ditching your Xbox 360 or Wii to obtain the Playstation consule. That's how deep The Show is.

More after the jump....

Star-divide

On first look, The Show impresses the eye. As soon as the main menu appears you have a variety of options to pick from. Let's say you just wanna get a quick game going ... of course you have the QUICK GAME option. Wanna play as Aramis Ramirez to hit in the home run derby? You got it. Wanna play a season as the Chicago Cubs? Of course, you got that too. How about building a franchise with your beloved Cubbies, creating your own ticket prices, parking prices, concession prices? And maybe even have sponsors for Wrigley Field to build in revenue? And pick Derrek Lee as my spokesperson for TV and radio to sell season tickets? Hell, you wanna play the minor league games too! But there's NO way a baseball game can be that deep.... right? No, you can do that too in the FRANCHISE mode.

Okay, okay let's say your not even into all that, and that won't stroke your ego enough. Well let's say you wanna be a 18 year old prospect catcher. Raw talent and you want to create the man like it's your son and play him throughout the minors and through rule 5, arbitration, free agency, etc. Well of course The Show has that for you too (Road to the Show).

The graphics for this game are simply amazing. Increditbly detailed. They have most players down to the tee! From players all the way down from Albert Pujols to Jeff Samardzija they have the looks dead on. Their are flaws as sometimes players might go through walls and disappearing for a second. And sometimes infielders don't move as much as you would like -- granted the ball might be out of their range but you would at least like to see alittle effort.

For a game for so much depth you would think the graphics would be just "ok" or "borderline good" -- but the graphics on the game are nothing short of great. So no problems there.

The gameplay for me is also wonderful. More often times than not the simulation of the game is incredibly accurate to what really happens. My only problem would be in the franchise mode/road to the show mode. Sometimes pitchers have pitches in their arsenal that are no longer realistic for a pitcher to have. I've faced at least 10 pitchers in my season of Road To The Show that have the Knuckleball in their arsenal. Way too many pitchers are groundball/flyball pitchers not enough strikeout pitchers in the future also. I'm nitpicking though.

The sound to the game is great. You can add your own batting music for each individual player -- or even make your own soundtrack to listen to while your not playing the game. The announcers are good - sometimes alittle repetitive, but mostly they are on target. For example I'm playing as Josh Davis in the Road to the Show feature, and I was a September call up, and I made a horrific swing and the announcer said: "If he keeps making swings like that, he'll find himself back in AAA". Speaking of Road to the Show...

Road to the Show is a great feature. You can play as your self as a 18 year old kid in AA trying to make yourself into the big leagues and turn yourself into the next Albert Pujols or Roy Halladay. You -- like a regular prospect in real life --  have series of goals you have to obtain before you get called up to the next level or in some cases get into the starting lineup or rotation. For example, I'm playing as myself and my current goals are: Collect 28 total bases within the next 7 series, have a batting average of .300 or higher, draw aleast 3 base on balls. Also I must increase my contact vs. left handers and my plate discipline. I can increase those attributes if I can obtain enough points to increase them. For example, if I get a hit in a game I will get 5 points to go towards my attributes.

I'm in my third year on my Road to the Show and I'm in the MLB playing for the A's. I'm hitting .390 with 12 HR and 44 RBI's. Halfway through my season. .390 with some pop in my bat and you know what irks me, I'm hitting 8thin my lineup because I'm a rookie with less attributes than some other guys. I have Rajai Davis hitting second on my team and he's hitting .240 with a OPS of .669. Who's managing this team? Dusty?

I was tempted to ask for a trade. Hell, I did ask for a trade (you can do that, by the way)! You know what message I got from my GM/Manager? "Your a vital part of our organization, trading you would not be a asset to the team". Bunch of crap. But that's what makes this game soooo good. I'm going to demand a hell of alot of money in the offseason though and I might not even re-sign with the A's if they keep me down in the lineup like this ;-)

The franchise mode is awesome, also. I love being able to control my whole team and they even have arbitration and the rule 5 draft for all you baseball realist out there. Like I said before you can set your own ticket prices, beer prices, cotton candy prices, valet parking prices, etc. Everything you could thing of. If you wanna put a billboard right on top of the scoreboard at Wrigley to build more revenue, you can do it. Wanna build a spa room for you club to build up morale? Make your team go from riding the bus from game to game (which kills morale), to taking a private jet. The only thing missing from this is a 3/4 team trade option. I hate that you only can trade with another team. Come on The Show, it is 2010 :-)

In closing, The Show 10 is one of the greatest games not only for baseball, in general, as far as sport games are concerned. The 59.99 it cost will be a long forgotten memory as soon as you step up to the plate.

I'll do the MLB 2K10 review if enough of you want me to. Hope you guys value my opinion.

new for this year?

without reading other reviews yet (ign, etc)…what’s new this year in The Show? As far as I can tell, everything described above was available last year

HOME RUN DERBY IS BACK!

Finally, something to do when I’m too drunk to play a real game…

by lswaidz on Mar 9, 2010 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Nothing too much has changed.

They’ve added the catcher to the Road to The Show. Also some flaws within Road to the Show were improved. Some new interfaces, also you can create movie reels with your highlights. Also Home Run Derby.

Basically this year it’s a more polished version of last year.

2010 is OUR year.

by Unique on Mar 9, 2010 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

wow! that really sounds like a cool game....dont have a ps3,

almost thankful…. I’d be afraid I’d get completely lost in that game and never come back out. I dont think there’s enough time in my day for it!

Good review...

I was afraid you were going to copy and paste what I’ve already read in 50 other reviews, but this was a nice perspective from a fan. Thank you.

Don’t bother with 2K10… I could save you the time and post a picture of dog poop.

Great Review...

….but am I the only one who is having a tough time getting the hitting down? I bought this game last week when it was released, and am constantly amazed at the graphics and all the “realism” that has been injected into this year’s version. But I am having a heck of a time hitting.

Maybe it’s just me.

same here

I think I just need to work at it more but the timing is tough. I have trouble recognizing pitches and I swing at a lot of crap. I’ve yet to take a walk.

by montanacubby on Mar 9, 2010 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

I was having a hard time at first.

Try moving down to either “Veteran” or “Rookie”. The most important thing is timing, although just like in real life, you can hit the ball right on the sweet spot and it could be a deep flyball out.

After I moved from veteran to rookie and got the timing right, I got it down pretty good.

2010 is OUR year.

by Unique on Mar 9, 2010 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

Forgot to add.

Found another glitch. On check swings, I could check my swing (on strike two) – but the umpire would say I went around on one shot, and call me out, but then a second later they would say I WOULD check my swing but it was too late, the CPU already has me out.

2010 is OUR year.

now that is REALISM

the umps blow calls in this game too…

yeah, i like how they call strikes balls and balls strikes sometimes.

it frustrates you, but it is a lot more realistic.

Other features I have seen

They also have an umpire replay review of a disputed home run. Fireworks at ballparks that feature them. Excellent batting stance recreations, TV Broadcast like presentation where you get scores from around the league and up to the day totals on SB,Doubles, triples, HR etc.

Oh yeah dude I dunno...

I’m gonna have to say the best MLB game every was MVP Baseball (2005, I think) right before it went like college teams or whatever… the last licensed one… that or whatever the newest Tiger Woods is.

by lswaidz on Mar 9, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

No these the show games are better..

than MVP but I agree that MVP were always just awesome games..

Go Cubs Go!!

by mkcubs21 on Mar 9, 2010 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

No way!

The MVP series was far superior to the Show. Its really a shame they discontinued that line, the game play was outstanding.

Having said that, the gold standard for baseball video games is still RBI Baseball for NES, in my opinion.

The Show has improved on MVP in ever way imaginable

MVP is still rock solid to play, and I used to be a part of the community that had it on the PC and modded the crap out of it, but I don’t even feel a need to go back to that considering how awesome The Show is. Like, MLB 09 was amazing, and there are no words to describe how great MLB 10 is.

By the way, new roster update was put up yesterday, which fixes issues revolving around player potential, players playing at the wrong positions, etc.

by Craig in South Bend on Mar 10, 2010 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

Disagree

the gameplay on the Show could be easier and more fun, I feel its difficult just for the sake of being difficult. MVP, had it continued could’ve made improvements, but the basic things like pitching and hitting (and the camera angles used) were much better. I could care less about player potential.

by tripdenten on Mar 10, 2010 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

Not to nitpick

but me referring to a roster update was a heads up to those playing the game because there’s been an issue in franchise and Road to the Show modes with players not progressing at all because they were all given a very poor player progression rating. I have to ask, if you don’t care about something that directly affects the two main gameplay modes, then what are you playing this for? In fact, have you even played 10?

But in fairness,

i haven’t given MLB 10 a chance yet. I gave up on this series after 08, I just hated that game and some of its quirks.

this game is incredible...

I’ve got a Cubs franchise going and Randy Wells is looking very good in April… The biggest thorn in my side in the first month and are becoming legit Cubs killers are Brewers Prince Fielder and Jody Gerut… they have my number more than anyone so far. D-Lee is off to a great month as well as Soriano and Marlon Byrd.

Great, great game.

Also new --

In the Road to the Show mode if you don’t cover a base or you throw to the wrong base you’ll get points deducted from your potential attributes.

2010 is OUR year.

by Unique on Mar 10, 2010 12:55 PM CST reply actions

Yep

It used to be where I wouldn’t give a crap about fielding early on, and then I started tanking in my fielding attributes due to my errors. That, and I felt like my arm strength was akin to Theriot’s.

by Craig in South Bend on Mar 10, 2010 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

The fielding practice in RTTS and

catchers calling the games and improved graphics are the changes that are amazing. There also seems to be more CPU trading in this version.

I’m in August in year two. Lead AA in hits, doubles and RBI’s after being drafted by the Giants in year one and was recently traded to the freakin’ Royals and demoted to backup in AAA.

may addition by subtraction be real

by N Oakley on Mar 10, 2010 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

I loved MLB the show 08

Probably my fav game ever, but 09 was frustrating, you’d swing at a ball and the computer would say you hit it in the wheelhouse with perfect timing, yet you’d ground out to second. And there was a glitch where the automatic computer catch up option seemed forever turned on. No matter how many runs you got ahead the computer would always come back to draw level or worse.

If those two flaws are amended this game will make me super happy.

Also, who plays with the all time rosters? That is so much fun.

"Keep pushin till it's understood,
And these badlands start treating us good."

by AussieCub on Mar 10, 2010 6:13 PM CST reply actions

I think the hitting is as close to perfect as you'll get

and when you press in the left thumbstick now, it accurately displays how good your swing was. Yeah, I was annoyed by the same things you were annoyed with, and those are now fixed. What’s even better is the emphasis placed on Vision and Discipline. In RTTS, when you start out you obviously have low Vis and Dis ratings, which is going to cause you to miss the ball more on curveballs, knuckleballs, or a good fastball with some movement on it. Improving those ratings really helps with the speed at which you swing your bat, and the AI will factor in your Vis and Dis ratings to allow you to put contact on the ball and be better at fighting away pitches. The “Just Late” or “Too Early” stuff helps a lot this time around, as if the pitcher throws the changeup with a 2-0 count, and I swing and miss, the little read out really helps me adjust for the next time that pitch comes my way. I really can’t say enough about how good the hitting is now.

As for the catch up stuff, I honestly don’t know. I’m mainly playing RTTS, and the pitching on my team is terrible, so we can never hold a lead. That actually leads to some real emotion to, because there I am going 2-4 with 3 RBI, and my pitching just keeps giving the game away. I’m in the minors, so I should be able to shine quite a bit, regardless of how my team does, but I WANT my team to win. I don’t want to lose, but look good myself in the process. I want us all to look good.

Now, here I am, seeing I have 6 more hours of work left before I can go home and log in some more hours in RTTS. It’s going to be a long 6 hours.

Thanks Craig, I'm really happy they've refined the hitting

and the feedback actually helps you to refine your own timing. I don’t play as much Road to the Show but with how in-depth it sounds I’ll certainly be playing more this year.

The game has just shipped over from the US and I’m picking it up tomorrow. Cannot wait!

I have yet...

…to win a single game. Giants, Padres, Pirates, Nationals, Mariners: I’ve lost to each and every one of ‘em. We’re getting better though, and now that I’ve got a hang on hitting, maybe we’ll be able to put more runs on the board. Last game: 14 hits and 4 runs. Sad, huh?

My favourite moment so far: Cubs v. Giants @ AT&T. Renteria is on third, with one out. Lincecum comes up – you know he’s going to bunt – and pulls back because the pitch is outside. Next pitch, I opt for the high heat. But as I’m going through my windup, the announcer shouts “The runner’s coming home!”

The AI pulled a suicide squeeze! How cool is that?! Fortunately, Tim-may popped up the bunt, and Zambrano doubled up Renteria off third. It was a pretty damn cool moment, and easily justified my purchase.

I won! Finally!

Granted, it was only against the Pirates, but we smacked Zach Duke all-around PNC Park. Things were so bad, that John Russell yanked him in the middle of the 4th.

Final score was 11-4. Cubs had 23 hits, and one error. Aramis went deep in the second, and Byrd smacked a grand slam in the 5th!

Damn that was fun! Glad I decided to play that one final game.

The Giants have the splash count...

so many little details… the IVY at Wrigley comes in slowly just how it does… I traded a strugglin’ (and I hated to do this, but somehow it went through) Ted Lilly and a young AAA player for Jon Lester (Red Sox had him on the block) Randy Wells is the leading candidate for Cy Young and Soriano is batting .370 through May with 22 homers , 50 RBIs. leading MVP candidate.

Go Cubs. Go Irish.

(Red Sox had him on the block)

possibly because of the player potential bug. a lot of good players have poor potentials, which causes them to become the equivalent of aaron miles in several years.

by jesus christos on Mar 11, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

But they couldn't...

…include the Giants’ announcer. It would’ve been cool to hear Renel Brooks-Moon announce the line-ups just because she’s the only female announcer in the game. I don’t expect Sony to get all the announcers, but FIFA 10 has really set the bar in this aspect. I’ll need to look at the list again, but FIFA 10 includes English, French & Spanish commentary on the disc, with the option of some 15 or so other languages downloadable from the FIFA store.

Granted, other languages aren’t needed (how cool would it be to have J-League announcers?), but expanded commentary is a must. I like Vasgersian, but Dave Campbell seems to be under utilized, and The Hud is damn annoying. Keep the three of ‘em if you’d like, but more commentary would go that much further towards solidifying itself as the gold standard in baseball.

Space is, of course, a problem, but dling as a “patch” when the game is inserted would solve that issue.

In my first year

I’ve been traded 5 times. I started out with the Twins, then the Reds, then the Mets, then the Red Sox, then to Milwaukee, and finally to Seattle. Mind you, these are the organizations I’m being traded to, not the teams themselves. I’m starting to wonder if the South Bend Silverhawks are in this. I guess I should be traded to the D-Backs organization any day now, so I’ll find out then.
