Spring Training.....bring the Cubs and others to Austin (a requested post)
This topic makes no sense I am sure to many, but who cares. Let the games begin
Putting on my best Bud Selig thinking hat, to come up with a sensible reason, here is the best I can do
There should be three divisions of Spring Training as follows
This would be a big boost to MLB and draw new fans annually, and allow for people to travel to different areas than normal, meaning NEW BARS TO BE THROWN OUT OF, as well as new sites to view as a fan on vacation to the three areas.
Each year you rotate the teams from one state to another.
Year One
FLORIDA
Marlins, Braves, Nationals, Mets, Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Orioles, Blue Jays
TEXAS
Cubs, Brewers, Reds, Pirates, Astros, Cardinals, White Sox, Royals, Tigers, Twins, Indians
ARIZONA
A’s, Rangers, Angels, Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Padres, Rockies
Year Two
TEXAS
Marlins, Braves, Nats, Mets, Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Orioles, Blue Jays
ARIZONA
Cubs, Brewers, Reds, Pirates, Astros, Cardinals, White Sox, Royals, Tigers, Twins, Indians
FLORIDA
A’s, Rangers, Angels, Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Padres, Rockies
Year One
ARIZONA
Marlins, Braves, Nats, Mets, Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Orioles, Blue Jays
FLORIDA
Cubs, Brewers, Reds, Pirates, Astros, Cardinals, White Sox, Royals, Tigers, Twins, Indians
TEXAS
A’s, Rangers, Angels, Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Padres, Rockies
It makes sense for the Texas location to be Austin, because there is no room here for new stadiums, but the Dallas Cowboys once used St Edwards University for their training site, and made news for destroying the dorms there some years ago. If its good enough for them, why not 1/3 of MLB annually.
There is a good public transportation as well here in Austin, including a light rail system that was set to be working about 18 months ago, but still has not been launched (thankfully the tax dollars and the bus fares were raised to pay for it twice). Having the light rail (yes one rail, the train will go from one end of the line to the other on one rail only, there will not be two trains passing each other, that is too futuristic for Austin) can only help the players, and coaches get around town slowly, allowing them not to be hurt trying to rush back and forth. Plus my friend drives a Cab and is a Cubs fan, so this would allow him to make less money driving, since he would be at the games with me, while I am ditching work to get fired.
There are stadiums in Austin, like Austin Community College, St Edwards University, University of Texas (each has a softball field too for bunting drills!). Of course an hour outside Austin there is Texas State University as well as Round Rock Express, but those stadiums would be off limits, they are not close enough, and San Antonio has some about 90 Minutes away, but that is a tourist town, we dont want to use it for Spring Training, since their tourists would just get in the way of MLBs..
Now this all would happen with the Arizona teams being charged a $3 fee per $1 the ticket costs (if the ticket face value is $10, there is a $20 fee, because that bringing the total ticket price to $12) which for Jessica, we will be sure to break out the tax as well as the cost per beer cup that will be crushed in the seats.
The best part of this, is it fixes the MLB blackout problem, since all teams would now have all the states in the Union (not including the greater Seattleland area) as their home market, and allowing them not to be blacked out.
To finish the fix, the ASG would be moved to Hawaii and be played the weekend before the World Series.
This is why MLB needs to bring Spring Training to Austin, Texas.

LOL....well written, I agree with Chanman...Bravo
actually, I like the rotating teams going to the three different cities which would mean you can vacation in different places to see your favorite team playST games, And I think Austin would be a cool location to add to the mix, we could get together with ya for a game and a beer. Love it

Love this idea
Could it be because I live in Ft Lauderdale & my sister’s in Austin, so that would give me 2 yrs out of 3 to go to ST without hotel bill?
Dear Bud Jr.
I have no clue where you thought of this one, but there are some problems:
It makes sense for the Texas location to be Austin, because there is no room here for new stadiums, but the Dallas Cowboys once used St Edwards University for their training site, and made news for destroying the dowms there some years ago. If its good enough for them, why not 1/3 of MLB annually.
Okay. The Cowboys training camp is in the summer, that works. MLB camp is in the spring- students still have classes at that time and still live in those dorms.
Next…
Now this all would happen with the Arizona teams being charged a $3 fee per $1 the ticket costs (if the ticket face value is $10, there is a $20 fee, because that bringing the total ticket price to $12) which for Jessica, we will be sure to break out the tax as well as the cost per beer cup that will be crushed in the seats.
Wouldn’t that be a $30 fee?
And finally…
To finish the fix, the ASG would be moved to Hawaii and be played the weekend before the World Series.
Do you want to be like the Pro Bowl? I’m not against the Hawaii thing. But the weekend before the WS? No one will show up.
Sincerley,
Your average Bud Selig hater
you took this WAY too serious
I guess you missed the sarcasm.
I know that the total cost would have actually been $40 for the tic as I detailed it, i also made two year one and no year three in a three year rotation.

And the light rail debacle here in Austin needs no sarcasm added.

Ain't Gonna Happen, But...
I don’t think it would be an absolutely crazy idea to have spring training in either central Texas around San Antonio and Austin or east Texas around Houston and Galveston. Dallas/Ft. Worth is too far north. The weather as far north as Austin is dodgy enough in March. As it stands right now, I believe Anchorage has as much chance of getting spring training as Austin does.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
You do realize this was all done as a joke, right?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Sort Of Figured That
I’d like to see spring training in North Dakota. It would be a a big boost to tourism there. All that would need to happen would be for Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot to each build three domed spring training stadiums a piece. With today’s economy and North Dakota’s tax base, that shouldn’t be much of a problem at all.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
The only thing I would add
would be to have two teams a day travel to portland so they can get practice playing in the rain and cold weather so they can compete with the northern teams early in the year. Why prepare to play in warm weather only to have to go back north? The two teams would rotate each day so we could have all 30 teams go through by the end of spring training. This would also allow teams to practice travelling. It can’t be easy to relax all winter only to have to travel a lot during the summer. Plus, Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world, which gives much more beer options at games.
You've convinced me
with those beer options. I think I’m going to have to make a trip there to check that out.

i do like one local brew in Texas
St Arnolds. A very nice taste, and I love their brewery tour. I highly recommend it to everyone (even non drinkers) when in Houston on a Saturday. Regulars to the tour actually will lay out their Monopoly boards and pick up from last week (no joke, I have seen this happen before there).
I also love the offers they have for recycling
Have you ever noticed a large stack of Saint Arnold six-pack and twelve-pack carriers, folded up, gathering dust in the corner of your kitchen? Have you wondered what to do with them? If you have imaginative ideas (such as stapling them to a t-shirt and seeing if others will follow creating a new fashion trend), let us know. But we have a great idea: RECYCLE THEM.
Bring us your twelve-pack and six-pack carriers and we will exchange them for cool Saint Arnold stuff. Bring us 10 and get a pint glass. Bring us 120 and get a tie-dye. If you are really crass, we’ll even give you money (10 cents each), but don’t you think that cool stuff is more fun?
The caveat: the carriers must be in good shape. If you were using it to reprimand your dog after discovering that he wasn’t yet completely housetrained, or using it to remove his, uh, “mistake”, please don’t return it.
What’s in it for us? The carriers are expensive and it makes more sense for us to reuse them once than to put them directly into the landfill. We buy several hundred thousand of them a year, so saving some would be nice. Below is a partial summary of our exchange program:
10 carriers: Pint glass
10 carriers: Tour admission
25 carriers: Pilsner glass
50 carriers: T-shirt (one sided, not the seasonal)
100 carriers: Hat
100 carriers: Baseball t-shirt
100 carriers: Ladies t-shirt
100 carriers: Tin sign
120 carriers: Tie-Dye T-shirt
160 carriers: Saint Arnold tap handle
200 carriers: Work shirt
320 carriers: Guayabera
675 carriers: Bike jersey
200,000 carriers: Tie-dyed 1957 Bentley

Didn't Know About Breweries in Portland
When I think of breweries, I think of St. Louis and Milwaukee. Portland has evidently slipped under the brewery radar for a lot of us.

I think they should move the Rangers to the NL Central…or at least to the AL Central. No wonder why they don’t have many diehard fans. They play all of their road games 2 hours behind. All of their opponents are in California.

I think you mean on the West Coast.
But your idea has some merit. However, should that happen, I think MLB may want to create two new AL West teams. Possible locations could be as follows: Portland (Oregon), Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, or if you really want to stretch the division, Anchorage or Honolulu. However, those last two would cause logistical nightmares for the rest of MLB, so I think they should only be used as a last-gasp solution. The other three cities would be good candidate cities.

Or possibly Vancouver, too.
That might also be a stretch, I’m not sure the Mariners would like a team that close to them. However, from what I saw in Vermont, very few people here were Expos fans (prior to their move to Washington), and most people here supported the Red Sox (and still do).

Like I said,
Anchorage and Honolulu would cause logistical nightmares.
It wouldn’t just be the wintry conditions in Anchorage. There would also be the extraordinary cost of travel. It likely wouldn’t be worth it.
Hence, why I suggested Portland, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas. If they realign the AL like that, I could see those cities possibly getting a MLB team.

SLC is not big enough.
Neither is Vegas. They’re fairly small TV markets.
Portland — that makes some sense. So would Charlotte.
But the fact is, expansion, if any, is many years away.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Las Vegas isn't big enough? Seriously?
The US Census Bureau estimated the 2008 population of the Las Vegas area as 1,865,746 people. I imagine, as the 2010 Census happens, we will know for sure, but the Las Vegas area has more people than a lot of cities that have professional teams.
Salt Lake City, I can understand why not having a team there is potentially a good idea. Las Vegas, I could see MLB offering them a team (along with Portland, as you suggest) if the Rangers move to the AL Central and MLB adds two more teams to the AL West.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. Las Vegas is the 42nd largest TV market. That would be by far the smallest TV market in MLB. Currently the smallest is Milwaukee.
