Milton Bradley Interview w/ ESPN
Milton Bradley sits down with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez and says "He felt like a prisoner in his own home". For the record: "Home" being a condo he rented, that I believe he still owes money on, after violating terms of the lease.
I know we've dicussed MB over and over again, but I felt the video interview was worth posting.

Saw this, didn't want to post it because I am extremely sick of reading about Milton Bradley.
It’s completely ridiculous that he questioned whether somebody within the Cubs organization actually sent him racist hate mail. I just wish he’d shut up and concentrate on his own baseball team, hopefully we can do the same.
Can’t blame you for posting this though, the guy knows how to make headlines.

as does ESPN
I don’t remember ESPN sitting down with Jacque Jones, and Latroy Hawkins and doing a lengthy interview about the racism that supposedly permeates Chicago. Why does Milton get that special treatment? Could it be because he’s a jackass that who will say anything in an attempt to garner sympathy, and ESPN is banking on him saying something so nutty, that people will talk about it?

He will always be an idiot at this pace.
And truly I feel sorry for him. He thinks he’s been traded or not re-signed by teams because of his injury history only? Please.
I know this is harsh, but, I dislike him more than any Cub that ever played. He ALWAYS has a excuse for everything and that not only doesn’t work in baseball… it doesn’t work in life. Go somewhere with that bullshit Milton.
2010 is OUR year.
Guys in the Cubs Organization Who Haven't Been Traded Despite Injury History:
Mark Prior
Kerry Wood
Ryan Dempster
Angel Guzman
Aramis Ramirez
Derrek Lee
Alfonso Soriano
I could go on.
Some of these guys have had better years than Bradley. Soriano is the exception because you can’t trade him.

He’s on a team that’s excited to have him, and he can’t let go of this? Ugh, whatever.
Hate mail delivered by someone in the organization? This guy’s gone off the deep end. It’s totally ridiculous.

He’s a deluded man with an agenda against the team, the city, and the people who I think will do whatever he can to bring us down.

Plus a false statement.
MB criticized Lou in the interview because he called him a “piece of s…” in “front of everybody” but didn’t apologize in the same way, doing it in the privacy of the manager’s office, instead. As I recall, Lou did tell the press he was sorry . So, in short, MB wasn’t entirely truthful in the ESPN interview when he criticized Lou. Furthermore, the reporter didn’t question MB’s accuracy.
It's a sympathy/feel good piece for ESPN

I would be very surprised if the Cubs org. did not address these accusations….what a smear on our city and our team. When Hendry brought this guy in we lost more than clubhouse chemistry….he’s a blight on the city of Chicago, and will be for years to come.
" It’s spring fever - you don’t know what it is you want, but it fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so. "--Mark Twain
This sums it ALL up...
""I don’t think the entire city of Chicago is racist or anything like that. If you weren’t booing me, I’m not talking to you."
Mr. Bradley has decided in his mind that if you boo him, you are a racist. I’m sure many of the racial taunts that he claims were nothing more than people calling him out for his poor play. Now, I grew up on the Southside and visited a Southside bar or two and know that the N word is frequently used. My Mom and Step Dad frequent a bar/restaurant in Mokena called Little Al’s where the owner (Lil’ Al) refuses to allow any program on TV with Barack Obama and has made other racial statements before. So I’m not oblivious to there being racial tension in Chicago.
However, Milton Bradley has convinced himself that he was racially targeted and cannot let it go. I get it. It’s very much like the episode of Southpark (Fishdicks) where Cartman continues to lie so much that he begins to believe it. Bradley has convinced himself that those that booed him were racists and only those that applauded his mediocre performances and immature ways are good people.

Remember when he said:"I have no interest in talking about Chicago, I've moved on. I wish you would move on. And I wish the Chicago Cubs organization the best."
I knew he wasn’t going to stay on the “high road” for long.
That takes “class” and Milton has zero.

"I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?"
Can’t help but think of this every time I hear the latest about Bradley. The guy probably swears the eye on the back of the dollar bill winked at him once.
ESPN does its best to fan the flames of hatred for the Chicago Cubs
So they interview the village idiot (Milton Bradley) to say things about the Chicago Cubs. He pissed and moaned during his time with the Cubs despite the fact that Jim Hendry handed him the keys to the kingdom with a three year $30 million deal. Milton never once asked himself what he had to do to get himself shoved out the door because that is not a contract that is usually traded. Instead, he looks to external tormentors. What a jerk.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
"...unless you're Superman -- you're Andre Dawson, you're Ernie Banks, you're in the Hall of Fame..."
Milton Bradley says Chicago is a tough place for African-American players to play unless they’re Hall of Famers, but I’m pretty sure the Shawon-O-Meter never rose much higher than .278, and we loved Shawon Dunston.
as I posted below ...
Cubs fans didn’t seem to have a big problem with Juan Pierre in the awful 2006 season. Kenny Lofton wasn’t booed …
There is an odd trend that the boo targets of late have been black players — but I think (and hope) that the amount of booing was based more on those players’ personalities and performances than race.

One of MB's comments ALMOST makes sense ...
His line about Dawson and Banks being accepted as black players is interesting — and he mentions Hawkins and Jones as proof that black players who aren’t HOF caliber will get booed. It made me stop and think for a second. But I quickly came up with some names of black players who struggled (or, at least, weren’t HOFers) who were never booed (Juan Pierre?) or who were booed and bounced back (D-Lee, obviously). It should be noted that Derrek Lee is not a Hall of Fame player.
One thing that I find interesting with MB is that he isn’t usually coming from left field when he makes comments. Instead, he takes points that are true, but doesn’t provide much context. Then, he uses the truth minus context to further his point. Last week, he essentially said the Cubs and the fans miscast him, and that’s why things didn’t work out. I think there is truth to that argument — but it’s only a small piece of what happened in 2009.
got cut off ...
But it is true that the biggest targets of boos by Cubs fans in recent years have been black players — Patterson, Hawkins, Jones, Bradley. I’d argue that each of those guys was booed for different reasons (Patterson failed on his promise, Hawkins blew a ton of saves in 2004, Jones made repeated mental mistakes and Bradley is, well, Bradley).
OTOH...
… white players like Kyle Farnsworth and Todd Hundley also got booed.
I would argue that the targets you mention — Patterson, Hawkins, Jones, and yes, Bradley — were booed for their performance, not for their race.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Add Kevin Gregg to that list.
And Ron Santo got so much hate mail that some of his teammates joked him into thinking he had a bomb delivered to him.
Just because a person is booed doesn’t necessarily mean it’s racist.

I believe Jim Edmonds got booed when he first joined the Cubs as well.
And I have to think Aaron Miles took some verbal abuse as well.
Good point about Ron Santo, too.
To respond to several posters ..
Hundley hasn’t been a Cub for nearly a decade, and Farnsworth hasn’t been a Cub since 2004. I don’t remember Miles and Gregg getting booed ALL that much, and Edmonds was booed for different reasons — he had been akin to A.J. before he joined the Cubs. The boos quickly turned to cheers, too.
And I don’t think hate mail to Santo — who hasn’t played a game for the Cubs in 35 years — is all that indicative of the current climate.
That said …
I also think performance is more important than race in terms of what causes booing (I said as much in my earlier posts. My point was that MB uses things that are true, without much context, to defend himself. He CAN say, in truth, that most of the big boo targets in the past few years have been black.
But, that’s not the whole story.
2004 ain't exactly ancient history
I understand what you’re getting at, and your last sentence indicates objectivity, but one could pare down the time frame as much as one could expand it to fit their theory.

fair enough, re: timeframe
Maybe my memory’s off, but I don’t remember Farnsworth getting booed all that much.
MB Is a Complete Moron
However, I don’t doubt that there are some racial undertones with players getting booed. The reason why I bring that up is that people tend to quickly fall in love with the white, scrappy players to the point where there is hero worship for guys that haven’t done all that much (See: Fuld, Sam; Murton, Matt; Hoffpauir, Micah).
That being said, nothing Milton Bradley says is relevant because he is the cause of his own problems…not the other way around.

…and I don’t know what to think. On the one hand, Milton comes off as such an intelligent, earnest guy…I want to at least give him the benefit of the doubt on some of what he says (the restaurant incident, for instance).
On the other hand, so much of what he says is just a vague puzzle of hard-to-believe oddities. I still find the incident involving his child hard to believe or understand. And he’s being given hand-delivered hate mail? Really?
At the end of the day, it’s just too exhausting to try and figure all this out. The only thing it does bring some clarity to is the ridiculousness of the notion that he was ever coming back.

Asked again about the Bradley interview, Dempster said: “I didn’t see it — what was it, bad coffee in Seattle?”
The attitude in Cubs camp is that they’ve moved on since Bradley left.

"There are no curses here...Games are won and lost on the baseball field" - Lou Piniella
About time!
I know a lot of people don’t care for Soriano… but I’ve liked a lot of the stuff he has been saying about Bradley also. He knows he gets boo’d, but he also says it’s part of the job. Etc…

Not only is it wrong...
but it speaks negatively to a person’s character AND is detrimental to the teams image that they would keep someone like that around… it’s a damn good thing Hendry and the Ricketts had the gal to get rid of him when they did. Imagine the shit storm we’d all be dealing with if he was still on the roster…
UGGH
I will be happy when his contract is up and he is no longer employed in the major leagues. I have to imagine he will cause problems in Seattle that will make him untouchable to any sane GM. He will be two years older with skills that are already on the decline. What a miserable piece of human waste.
You know what?
Silva may be a crappy pitcher but after MB garbage I embrace him.
OK I don't know shit about basketball.

Reaction from Mariners fans at Lookout Landing
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
And they took a shot at us over there
When Milton Bradley blows up for the first time over there, they’ll know exactly what were talking about. The honeymoon lasts until the first Bradley incident. That man doesn’t deserve the honor of wearing a baseball uniform, but since Seattle was willing to deal with that mess, they’re welcome to the clubhouse cancer.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

OMFG
Are they not thinking over there? Do we sound like that whenever a controversial player joins us? Do we just dismiss everything that has happened in the past and just assume all of the bad history that the player brings is warranted? Somebody posted my quote from ESPN before about how Bradley insinuates that only those that booed him are racists and said that it sounds pretty reasonable. LOL! Are you kidding me?
They all sound like a bunch of apologists for Milton Bradley. One guy claims that he never noticed a lack of professionalism on MB’s part on the field. Um, what do you call throwing a ball into the stands with less than three outs? What do you call blowing up at an ump in your first at bat at Wrigley? Are you kidding me???? Another says that Jim Hendry hasn’t kept his mouth shut for months now. When has Jim Hendry piped in at all about this subject? We applauded the guy for finally speaking up.
I felt like I was taking crazy pills after reading their posts.

rest assure, they'll find out soon enough.

You have to understand, they've been dealing with Silva for the last two years
They’ve only had Bradley for two weeks – they’re still in the honeymoon period.
They got rid of one of the worst pitchers in baseball in exchange for a player who’s supposed to be a pretty good hitter. They’re ecstatic that Silva’s gone – why wouldn’t they be willing to give the new guy every benefit of the doubt?

we are per Silva

At least we aren't in denial about Silva
Denial seems to be something that follows Bradley around. “Oh no! He can’t be that bad, can he?” Then Bradley angers you because he is who he is.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
true that!

And Now...
They’re taking attacks on individuals (Al). That’s classy…attack a guy for following a different baseball team and running a different site.
