Ok, we all know the first six games on the road didn't go 'exactly' as we had hoped. In fact, the road trip exposed some of the ugliness we hoped the Cubs had fixed or at least 'band-aided' for 2010. But today is different. Today is:
OPENING DAY at the Friendly Confines!
So let's step back from the ledge and enjoy what will surely be a great day for Cubs fans everywhere. The weather forecast is calling for a 'pretty good day' (as Bill Murray put it in Groundhog Day).
To that end, let's regale each other with (home) Opening Day stories.
I have two. The first is seeing the Cubs win their 1971 home opener in FRIGID conditions. Dry but low 30s. Wind off the lake. Fortunately Bob Gibson and Fergie Jenkins were pitching so the game moved along swiftly. Te Cubs won it in the bottom of the 10th inning on a Billy Williams home run and the game was over in less than 2 hours. Seriously. Extra innings and the game ran 1:50something...
My second OD memory is seeing the look of joy on Mrs. Zeke's face after Greg Maddux won the 2006 home opener (also against the Cards). This was her FIRST Cubs win at Wrigley, after going oh for 13.
So enjoy everyone.
