Opening Day Pregame Booing, Embarrassing

Like many Cub fans I wish I could have attended today's home opener but also like many Cub fans I have employment responsibilities that make such things impossible. I'm one of those guys that like to DVR all the Cubs home day games and try like hell to avoid any discussion on the Cubs or sports talk radio as to not spoil the already concluded outcome.

I began my evening watching today's pregame with the traditional opening day player ceremonies and was truly disappointed when I heard the Shark, Grabow, Caridad, and yes even Soriano get loudly booed. I know it's not the first time this has happened, and I'm certain it won't be the last but as I was watching this I started to think about how special the home opener is not just to the fans but also to the players, especially those that haven't enjoyed an opening day in a Cubs uniform(Caridad, Grabow).

I know how sanctimonious this reads but these players are flesh and bone like the rest of us and when they are getting booed on opening day before even getting a chance at redemption is thoughtless and petty. I've booed players many times from my seats at Wrigley though it was being done in the moment of lackluster play, I don't boo players for what they've done a week ago or two days ago, especially on opening day.

We should all take in and savor the special moments like today and we should allow the players to do the same.
