Tom Ricketts Visits The Bleachers
During yesterday's game, new Cubs owner Tom Ricketts walked all around the ballpark talking to fans (including stopping by our section in the LF corner). Here are two photos (a second after the jump) of his visit to the right field bleachers.

And nearly ran into him. He’s taller than you think from pictures.
And, by the way, no bison burgers at the regular food stand apparently, but there are bison dogs.

Very disappointed in the bison dogs..

They Got the PR Part Right
It remains to be seen how well the Ricketts will actually manage the finances of the club, but they seem to have done well so far in the public relations department.

I’m not exactly worried about them managing the finances of it.

I Am Encouraged
I think they will do a good job with the finances because of the ties with Ameritrade. I think this purchase was based a good bit on emotion. That’s great in one sense because they care so much about how the team does on the field. That could be potentially be bad because they might use their money unwisely and act impulsively because they want the team to win so much. The operative word in that sentence is “potentially”.
There is a lot more upside than downside in having owners that care about how the team does on the field. I like the Ricketts more than the Tribune Company or the Wrigleys back in the awful days of 1980-81. I’ll go out on a limb and say the Cubs will be consistently competitive under the Ricketts. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs made the playoffs five times in the next ten seasons.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
While that goal is great for those of us that remember pre-2003
And even better for those that remember the 50’s and early 60’s (I only remember back to the early 80’s), I’d look for more like 7/10. Especially if the finances of the game stay the same.

Unbelievable.
So much for the stuffed shirt corporate stiff who hides out in his luxury suite. What a novel approach, talking to fans!
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
Did anyone catch his story with L&B in ST?
He apparently was having a long day, and so when he stood up from his seat and saw someone pointing a camera in his direction, he just assumed they wanted him to pose for another picture. Nope – the woman was asking if he’d take a picture of her and her family. He took the shot, humbled, and handed the camera back to her. She had no idea who he was.

While I enjoy the story, the fact that we're impressed with this is scary.
Does this say something about the previous ownership? Or that people just expect the rich/famous to ignore everyone else? He’s a nice guy, and that’s great. But it’s not like he saved a kitten out of a burning tree. He took a picture. I sure as hell hope he would do that, especially in ST. Did I just ruin a nice little story with an unnecessary rant? Oops.

"In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is." -- Yogi Berra
Why?
1st answer: Because the previous ownership was a faceless corporation. 2nd answer: Yes…
Nothing wrong with being impressed. It’s totally cool, right? I’m too impressed – saw all 4 siblings greeting fans entering at Clark & Addison – and now have the “nice guy & easily accessible” owners of both my favourite teams.
Anyone who has witnessed the renaissance at 1901 W. Madison St since 9/26/07 knows exactly what I mean.
Just win the next game...!
What has happened with the Blackhawks just defies explanation.
That turnaround happened faster than anyone, even the most cockeyed optimist, could have imagined. Could Rocky have really had this entire transition planned out in advance?
They went from being essentially the next game’s gate away from missing payroll, to being one of the richest franchises in the NHL, during a time when the economy tanked and half of the NHL franchises (and NBA franchises, for that matter) resorted to borrowing to stay afloat.
Last year’s Chicago magazine article about Rocky’s changes really deepened my respect for that guy and what he’s managed to accomplish. And it’s not just the TV thing. For instance, he immediately reversed his father’s lifelong plan to leave Arthur Wirtz’s corner office unoccupied and untouched, as it had been since 1983. That takes some balls.
Basically, Rocky dramatically altered the course of the family’s most visible asset, going against the dying wishes of his father (and the still-living wishes of his brother), and in doing so, completely rehabilitated his family’s reputation in Chicago.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
The marketing stuff helped get Blackhawks fans back.
Then, they got lucky by having Kane and Toews making their debuts at just about the same time, players who could be franchise anchors for a decade.

He walked through SRO, too, and stopped to have his picture taken by a fan. Very nice.
A couple other things about opening day. It was pretty chilly in SRO. I had three shirts and a hooded sweatshirt on and had to pull my hood up.
Also, SRO ticket policy has changed. You can buy them at any ticket window, buy as many as you want (or at least 3, which is what I bought) and then leave the ballpark and return later. Last year you could only buy tickets for whoever was with you at the ticket window (Waveland windows only) and then had to go right into the ballpark. They were released for sale when I got to the park at about 9:15. I bought them at the Clark & Addison windows.
In last night’s blog you mentioned the attendance. It didn’t seem like a 41,000+ day to us, either. We had no problem securing our favorite spot along the last left field ramp. When it’s really crowded you have to stand at an angle to fit all the fans. And there weren’t too many fans on the ramp itself. I was surprised to hear the announced attendance.

I think some scalpers may have gotten stuck with some tickets.
A guy near me bought a ticket from a scalper (or whatever the legal version is called) after the game had started. He told me there were plenty of tickets still available.
Hey, it's a new century!

Cost?
I am unfamiliar with SRO – where are you able to stand? Just in the concourse behind the UD or terrace I am assuming Also how much are the SRO tickets for the day of game? I have a few tickets to some games, but I wouldn’t mind at all to stand for some more games.
SRO tickets are $16.80, including tax. I don't think they change that price
for value days, platinum days, whatever. You can stand pretty much anywhere at the top of the grandstand, along the top concourse of the lower deck, except where you’d be blocking traffic. You can also stand on the ramps leading up to the upper deck as long as you stay back against the chain link fence and don’t block access to fans with upper deck tickets. Last year they had a yellow line that delineated legal standing room, but it’s gone. There are ushers everywhere who will help you. They are very nice about letting you know where to stand and where you can’t. I think you can stand on those flat areas where there are no seats at the very top corners of the lower deck, too.
SRO is a lot of fun and very relaxed. You always meet people. I end up taking a lot of pictures for fans. Yesterday three guys from Spain stopped and asked me to take a shot of them with the field in the background. Handshakes all around! If someone needs to leave their spot to buy a pretzel or something, others will save his or her place.
The drawbacks are that there are fans walking in front of you and there are those posts that hold up the upper deck. But when you get used to it, the fans and the posts seem to disappear! If walking fans stop in front of us, we politely ask them to keep walking and they generally do. The ushers will help with that problem if necessary. If the fans in the section in front of you stand, it’s okay to walk up to the backs of their seats for that play, as long as you return to the legal area. When the fans stand at the end of the game when the Cubs are winning, you can move up and nobody really cares. We like it where we stand because there’s a gap at the end of the luxury boxes, where the new PNC Club is, so you can see almost the whole scoreboard.
We had a uproariously good time there yesterday. Met a lot of great fans. And with the Cubs wearing their hitting clothes, everyone was in a fun mood.

The reason the policy has changed
is almost definitely due to the massive drop-off in demand for tickets. They put the policy of going directly into the stadium in late 2007 I think – when the Cubs were in the playoff hunt and Cubs tickets were as hot as they’d ever been. Up until then, people who wanted to buy day of game tickets lined up before the box office opened in the morning and bought them. A lot of the people in line were scalpers. In an effort to keep things more orderly and cut the scalpers out the equation, the Cubs implemented the buy and go directly into the stadium policy.
So far this year, for most games, the demand is nothing like it was in late 07 all of 08 and the first few months of last year. Apparently they put the old policy back into place as the flood of scalpers have little financial incentive to snap up every available seat.
That may be true.
If demand ramps up later this year, it could be reinstituted.

Was it new?
I was not sure if Maddux was with the Cubs in Atlanta. There was no sign he was. The vast majority of Maddux’s public speaking is relatively boring. He clearly has the "on air’ Vs “off air” thing down to a science. There are a few interviews where he lets down his guard a little, but most of the best stuff comes from other players, managers and beat reporters.

So far, so awesome with the Ricketts. I love this guy.
It’s like having our very own Steinbrenner, except not paranoid or crazy. He’s basically doing exactly what you or I would do if all of our dreams came true and we owned the Cubs.
The Ricketts basically bet their entire family fortune on this, and it’s going to work out better than anyone could have hoped.
I predict that in 20 years when Tom is handing the reins to one of his kids, Wrigley will be completely rebuilt, the Cubs will have contended in essentially every season, the Ricketts family will be Chicago royalty, and their family name will be as well-known nationally as the Steinbrenners or Reinsdorfs.
The team isn’t going to appreciate in value the way it did for the Trib, but I think that’s beside the point. The Ricketts family is going to make a huge amount of money every year, and the non-balance-sheet benefits of owning the Cubs are priceless.

He Who Shall Not Be Named
A certain character who is known in the bleachers for being loud and generally gross. BCBers generally not fans of his.

Or put HWSNBN in a dunk tank on the main concourse
Personally I’d hand the vendor a $100 bill and have fun for an hour and a half.
Sittin' on the ledge and sippin' Kool-Aid...
If he'd donate the proceeds to Cubs Care or Project 3000
I’d start to reevaluate my opinions of said individual.
"Who ever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" -Frank Chance
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
Cool stuff I noticed while watching at home
He shook the hands of fans coming into the ballpark.
He picked a random Cubs family to throw out the first pitch.
I really like the giant posters on either side of the marquee.
He was great in his interview with Len and Bob.
He said he wants family oriented things to happen more often at games.
And now having read that he made the rounds through all parts fo the ballpark, I would say he is super awesome so far. I really hope his leadership and moola lead to great things for the Cubs and us fans.

Tom Ricketts is the best prospect the Cubs have.

As soon as Soriano's contract is up or can be unloaded and he get's
A better GM who will refuse to sign aging stars to HUGE back loaded multi year contracts with full no trade contracts is when he will really start flexing his ownership muscles.
I believe once he has real baseball people around him and has a bunch of money free’d up, they will make some sport moves and turn this team into a WS winner, and not just once. This team is going to be like the Redsox and Yankees, a team that is going to have a real chance to not just make the playoffs but to win the world series every year.
The haters will then have nothing to say about us loyal cub fans, as we shall be proud of the decades of dominance. We will show the Yanks and Redsox fans how to win with class. Oh I can’t wait for when it’s our time. It’s coming a lot sooner then most think !!
Go Cubs GO !!
Replace Jim Hendry with Kim Ng.
U of Chicago grad who has been the assistant GM on some great teams (late 90’s Yankees and late 00’s Dodgers). I can see Ricketts being the guy who hires the first female GM.
That would be something a trendsetter like Ricketts would do
It’s not like she’s not qualified
I am sure she could do a better job putting a team together then Hendry. She has learned from some f best. She been around a lot of winners.
Tom Rickets is like the Steinbrenner to baseball.

Huh?
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.
Go Pack!

Can you imagine
one of the Wrigleys telling the “Greg Freakin’ Maddux” story on himself? Crane Kennedy? Greeting fans at the gate? Visiting all parts of the park – he stopped by with Pat and Ron – including the SROs? Whatever else, Tom Ricketts is saying and doing all the right things so far. I am very impressed.

hilarious
about an hour or so after the game yesterday we were heading from Full Shilling to Sluggers (heck yeah, batting cages) and spotted Ricketts speed-walking down Clark with fans chasing after him. hilarious visual. great to see him interacting with fans—love it!
I've known Tom Ricketts since long before he was even mentioned as a possible owner of the Cubs.
I am excited beyond belief for him, and for all Cubs fans. What you see is definitely what you get, folks. Enjoy every minute of it!
