Don Wakamatsu already has hands full managing Milton Bradley
Hardballtalk via MSNBC:
Milton Bradley has played just seven games for the Mariners, yet manager Don Wakamatsu has already had a pair of sit-downs with the troubled outfielder.
Wakamatsu met with Bradley after he flipped off the crowd in Texas last week and they had a late-night, closed-door session yesterday to talk about his 1-for-22 start to the season. Here's how Wakamatsu described last night's chat:

Well Al..you should take your own advice
If you don’t like MB posts, don’t read them.
Some people are interested in Milton Bradley’s transgressions because of his history with the Cubs.

And, of course, what I'm saying is tongue and cheek
because it’s your job to monitor your site. But my feelings are the same for everyone else who pooh poohs MB posts.
by EamusCatuli23 on Apr 14, 2010 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions
I understand this.
Question to ponder: is it really necessary to post every single one of his transgressions here?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Necessary?
No. But we talk about a lot of things on this blog that aren’t necessary. I think that’s what makes it fun. There aren’t a lot of rules and people are free to discuss almost anything they want.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
It's not necessary
but unfortunately, many cubs fans are interested in the topic so I see no problem with it. Just look at the number of comments on this post compared to the other fan posts on the first page. It’s apparent that many cubs fans are interested in what Game Board does, either good or bad.
by EamusCatuli23 on Apr 14, 2010 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions
Maybe not every transgression,
but to me his flipping the bird to the fans was over the top enough to qualify.
Personally, I don’t mind the posts about him. It’s when those posts bring out nasty arguments (about racism, etc.) between ourselves that I get turned off. That’s my signal to stay clear. I certainly don’t mind if other people want to read them though.

Who's Milton Bradley??
United we stand and united we'll fall......down on our knees the day we win it all!
We have two options
1) Have a single thread for all Milton Bradley related nonsense.
2) Designate Milton Bradley as He Who Shall Not Be Named 2.0 (HWSNBN 2.0) and adopt this as a new BCB meme.
In all honesty, I try to ignore Milton Bradley now. He’s not playing for the Cubs anymore and he’s not a good player. So he managed to get a big contract out of Jim Hendry undeservedly and crap his way out of Chicago. So what.
I’m willing to bet that Carlos Silva works out better for us than Milton Bradley does over there. I don’t ever underestimate the sort of pitching coach Larry Rothschild can be because of what he did for Rich Harden and other members of our rotation. No one could get through to Milton over here because it was always all about Milton and Milton being unable to pad his stats. Nevermind that Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto were also having bad seasons. Milton had to make a big stink about his problems.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Carlos Silva will work out better than Bradley simply by not playing.

It doesn't matter in the least bit. It's my opinion and I can damn well voice it. I think
post about the day to day activities about someone who no longer with the team just for the sake of seeing them do something stupid is tiresome. I don’t get the fascination with it. Of course I realize I don’t have to read these posts and I don’t normally read them, but in order to voice my opinion about these types of posts I needed to voice it here. So there it is. There is no fanpost police and I don’t care if anybody takes into account what the hell I want to read. this
i am interested in this guy’s screw ups and very public blow-ups because i find them funny. if this guy had not played during one single pitch on the northside, i would still be fascinated by the antics of this guy.
some of us would read these stories, not because he’s a former cub, but because its milton bradley. if carl everett were still around doing really boneheaded stuff the same as bradley, i’d follow that too because it’s funny laughing at the massive tool reacting in a very public setting who doesn’t realize how massive a tool he really is.
i’m telling you, if ol milty is within the king county, washington city limits on the 22, 23 and 24 cubs fans will be all over this guy, and if the mariners aren’t doing particularly well during that time, well get your popcorn ready is all i have to say.
I propose
that we from here on out, when abbreviating Marlon Byrd, refer to him as MB and from here on out he is the only MB. When referring to that other guy, we refer to him as Evil MB. Or we can do the reverse if ironic nicknames are you bag.

no dusty baker tirades? we found out the hard way what an a-hole this guy is. can we forget about him now. PLEASE. no more bradley.
Why does BCB obsess on the two most miserable people to involve the Cubs?
Milton Bradley and BLou?
I'll take the bait.
Regarding the former. I think Cubs fans (myself) have a particular interest in MB because of his comments after being traded. He said his failure in Chicago was a result of everyone but him. By saying that, he leaves himself open to this sort of backlash. Cubs fans are interested in MB because these stories are proof that he’s wrong.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
The Cubs part of his story certainly ads an important layer...
…but I’d be almost as fascinated with him if he had NEVER played with the Cubs.
People like this…flakey, disturbed personalities who somehow still manage to function and, in MB’s case, thrive (let’s face it, the guy’s a millionaire many times over and always seems to find another team willing to take on his load) will always catch our attention.
I can’t wait until his biopic comes out one day.

Who cares if he is proven wrong? We all know the guy was wrong and
extremely dillusional. Why does his continued antics make folks he feel better if we highlight them? Milton Bradley continuing to make an ass of himself in no way legitimizes our complaints about him. The guy is a nut and a flake. Whatever.
This is just like the “but athletes are role models!” arguments you see pop up every time a guy gets in to some trouble.
Expecting anything better of these guys beacuse they happened to be talented at hitting a ball with a stick instead of data entry or plumbing or marketing is silly.
In many cases, they come from backgrounds we don’t understand, with traditions, methods of communication, and behaviors that we won’t appreciate. In other cases, they are just actual people with actual problems that are amplified by the bright light shining on them at every moment of every day.
In MB’s case, he’s a guy – just like you and I – with problems that he clearly struggles with – just like you and I – yet the whole world seems to delight in his miscues and mistakes as if he somehow deserves it because he makes more money than we do, or because his job transitions are interesting enough to warrant some press.
Look, if its some guy putting my life in danger on the highway, its one thing. This isn’t that. Every sign points to MB wanting to do well, wanting to succeed, wanting to fit in, wanting everyones approval. He’s a talented dude who continues to get in his own way. The cyclical “we hate you!” “no, i hate YOU!” between him and the fans is annoying, and not to his or the team he plays for’s benefit. It was a point i tried to make last season, and one that still stands even if he isn’t on “our” team.
Schadenfreude is one thing when were watching a guy who deserves it harmlessly stub his toe. Karma is indeed a bitch, but i believe MB has a problem, and it saddens me that everyone wants to point and laugh.

Anything MB brings on himself is deserved. He lost the benefit of the doubt at this point.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I don't claim he is innocent.
I clearly establish that he has problems. I’m just not sure delighting in his issues is the best approach for anybody.
Goodie wanted to compare him to some guy driving down the highway acting like a jackass and then passing him later while he’s pulled over and getting a ticket. At least in that case you can believe that the consequence will remind the perpetrator to not commit the crime again. Our mockery isn’t going to fix MB. It is an entirely pointless exercise of distain for a guy who no longer threatens to ruin our team, or whatever it was everybody believed he was doing with his crappy attitude.

"Chicago Cubs baseball is on the air."-Pat Hughes
Hendry intervened far too late.
And MB’s first run in with some policing was probably Lou calling him a POS.
I’m not absolving MB of blame, i’m just saying the Cubs organization and the fans handled it poorly as well. He is who he is. It was all pretty clear before he got the contract. Why act surprised and outraged about it?
The guy is a self destructive force that needs help. If he can’t intervene on his own behalf, i wish somebody else would. Its a waste of talent at this point, and i feel bad for him.

i feel for him
not for his situation, but for his inability to make rational decisions, or so it seems.
Unofficial Self Appointed President of the Castro Blocker Fan Club
I think, honestly, i give MB more leeway than others in Cubs World...
… because i’ve been close with people who behave much like him. They want with all their hearts to fit in, get along, be liked – but can’t stop from tripping themselves up when things get frustrating or hard. Some people aren’t wired to deal with adversity well, and piling on those people is never the solution.
To me, its a question of intent. Just like in my favorite prime time drama Law and Order Special Victims Unit (9PM Central on NBC!), there are degrees to the crime – 1st Degree Murder vs 2nd Degree vs Involintary Manslaughter. Without intent, the system is lenient.
I don’t believe Milton goes through life with the intent to be an asshole, but most of the fans have convicted him in the harshest of ways. I can’t see justification for pinning anything higher than Involuntary Asshole-ness on the guy. He wasn’t loafing on the field – even his teammates and coaches spoke of his effort. It didn’t seem he went LOOKING for fights with the fans or the team – they simply erupted when things went poorly. When things were OK, he could be friendly, even charming – and it seemed genuine.
To me, Milton’s punishments don’t fit his crime in a world of athletes who drive drunk, abuse women, carry guns, on and on and on…

My feeling is that...
… this individual is in the wrong line of work. He is, as has been pointed out, someone who likes privacy and does not like attention (or so he claims).
So what is he doing in a very public line of work?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Pains me to say this...
… might not be good at much else.
Athletes tend to… how can i say this… skate through their academic pursuits? And he clearly isn’t a people person, so sales is out…
If all you’ve ever done is play baseball, and you don’t much like people, whats left?

Artist.
Works for me. I stay in my studio as much as I can. If I act weird around people they just pass it off as “eccentric”. Then when I need companionship I come here. :)

they’re so much more interesting than “normal” ones. I’m weird and I’m proud. :D

I'm not sure
From all accounts, he started out being a jerk with the beat writers in spring training last year.

Ah, the old "whatever" rejoinder.
You’ve completely missed my point. I’m not saying I expect anything better out of him because he has athletic skill. I don’t expect anything out of him at all. Likewise, I don’t expect anything out of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Kevin Federline, or Jon Gosselin. But do I watch their public foibles and chuckle to myself and silently pass judgment? Absolutely, I do. Because they’re public figures, we all get to watch the slow-motion train wreck, as another poster put it.
And give me a break with the “they come from backgrounds we don’t understand” argument. This is true of every single person in the world. It’s not exclusive to athletes or entertainers or the like. That’s a lazy crutch to excuse bad behavior. We are the sum of our choices or actions. He could choose not to be a prick, but he takes the other approach. You think Soriano hears some absolutely awful crap from the stands during games? I’ll bet he does, but I have never seen him—nor would I ever expect to see him—flip off the fans or call them out in an interview.
Milton Bradley is what he is: a famous asshole. So I am going to point and laugh, and you can be sad if you like.

You completly missed mine.
He could choose not to be a prick, but he takes the other approach.
I don’t get that vibe. And plenty of people agree.
He doesn’t “choose” to act this way, he just floods out of him. Its something he can’t control. Its something he needs help for.
Likewise, I don’t expect anything out of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Kevin Federline, or Jon Gosselin.
And those people are fame whores, looking for attention. MB seems to want to play baseball and be left alone. He doesn’t do a good job of putting himself in that position, but people like you, acting like he’s some b-rate celebrity acting out to see his name in the gossip mags, don’t do much to bring any perspective to the situation.
I don’t have sympathy for the people you listed. I have sympathy for MB. And it legitimately does make me sad to see people group MB’s antics in with Paris Hilton’s, when its so blatantly clear the intentions, reasoning, and problems are so different.

Then someone needs to help him, but he has to want it first.
If he just went about his job, and didn’t act out in ways that make him a target of scorn, chances are he would get to be just left alone. It’s his behavior that causes the attention, and the vicious cycle will not be broken until he breaks it.

Agree.... or until somebody helps him break it.
I thought the cubs were idiots for not writing some anger management in to his contract.

Given all we know about this person...
… I think I’m pretty safe in drawing that conclusion.

The thing that has always depressed me...
… about MB conversations with you is that you’ve never been able to give him the optimistic benefit of the doubt that you afford so many other players, situations, and teams.
Nobody thought Donielle Willis would recover from his issues. He gave Detroit six solid innings last week.
The general tenor around MB has never really fit his crimes.

Yes, it has.
He has blamed everyone but himself for his problems. Dontrelle Willis never did that.

In one sense the Cubs are still connected to MB via Silva
The value of Silva will be indirectly measured by the antics of MB over in Seattle. The more MB acts up, the better we feel about Silva and the worse they feel there. Already, (based on online comments) some disgruntled Seattle fans rue the day the Mariners made that trade. So far, it’s been a great trade for the Cubs.
Sure
x = Silva Wins
y = Number of MB Antics
z = Silva’s value
Constant k = 18,000,000
z = ( x*y *1,000,000)/k

Wins
is a bad variable….maybe use WAR instead…

how about
x= Silva quality starts
y= MB melt downs
z= Difference in value based on WAR
Constant K = 18,000.000
z=(x-y*1000000)/k

He also hit a double, and made a headsup throw which prevented a run.
In the postgame interview, he attempted to deflect the accolades onto his teammates, and was personable and seemingly humble. I think the guy is actually trying.
Do not underestimate Don Wakamatsu. He seems quite adept in bringing out the best in his players.
"I lof to hit de home ron!"
Good for them
If Milton gets it together, then great for him. If Don Wakamatsu can get Milton to be a productive player and a happier, better-adjusted person, kudos to him.
I’m not blaming last year on Piniella, but it was fairly obvious that Lou and Milton did not have meshing personalities. Lou just didn’t seem to be able to figure out how to handle Milton and I think it affected how he managed the team last year. If the Cubs (Jim Hendry) had been smart, they would have had the psychiatrist on the staff last year. It wouldn’t just be so that Milton could deal with his problems, but to help with how everyone interacted with Milton. Some guys need a pat on the head and others need a kick in the ass and the Cubs needed help figuring that out.
