Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Well, maybe not all of them. At least Jim Edmonds realized it wasn't polite to gloat after kicking the tails of the Pirates to the tune of 20-0. But of course Ryan Braun displayed no such graciousness or class, with this being his quote:

"It was fun and it was special," said Braun, who homered, doubled, singled and drove in five runs. "This game is really so much about failure, particularly as a hitter, that you rarely get a day where everyone is enjoying so much success at the same time."

"I've never been involved in a game like this and I likely never will be again. So, I enjoyed it and I'll savor it. It's one to remember," he said.

What do you think? Is it cool to just pile on?

Of course, Braun didn't have to be a jerk about it

I dunno.

I once sat in the stands at Wrigley and watched the Cubs clobber the Dodgers 20-1. I laughed my ass off as every run scored because it just started to seem absurd after a while. My guess is that’s what Braun is talking about.

Hate them for who they are. But not for this.

Please.

There’s nothing wrong with that quote. What’s he supposed to say, they got lucky? You don’t like Braun. We get it. There are reasons not to and some of them are arguably legit, but pointing to this just makes you sound like a whiny little girl.

No it doesn't.

But her post didn’t say Braun was a jerk. It said his comment was that his comment was classless, and she’s been asked to point out why that is, or the parts she found offensive (and not just by me), and she’s declined to do that.

If she just said Braun was a jerk, I never would have responded in the first place.

So you agree that he's a jerk, then? ;-)

No...

… but I can see why he rubs some folks the wrong way. I think some of the otherwise unoffensive stuff he does now draws more of a reaction because of some incidents that occurred in his first year or two in the league. I’ve seen the guy stare down homeruns in the past and get chewed on by opponents as he made his way around the bases. But I’ve also seen him, in the at bat that follows, apologize to the catcher and the 1st baseman, if he makes it on. And I think his t-shirt line and the way it’s advertised makes him look like a tool. As for the photo above, which some see as evidence of his disrespect, I’d bet a $100 it was the photographer’s idea.

If he wasn’t a Brewer, I might find him annoying, I suppose. I thought Sosa, for example, was a showboating tool.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 23, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

No arguments on Sosa . . .

And I wasn’t aware that he’d apologize. Not bad.

I still don’t like his act against Dempster last year, especially when he was pretending to have been hit. But, I can’t deny I’d take him on my team.

Why the difference between "classless" and "jerk"?

It’s still her opinion. Why is an explanation needed for one, but not the other?

One is an incident, the other is an overall characterization

i.e., what about the comment was classless?

Probably true.

But it usually depends how the other guy comes in. I should have dialed it down a notch with my first comment above. Once I did so the responses got a lot more civil. I try not to troll, though I do sometimes frequent this site and others dedicated to divisional opponents, but this time I failed to talk myself out of posting a comment.

The throw certainly was pathetic.

And your comment, since it’s a joke, was in no way classless. See how easy it is? Now you try it. You keep trying to make this about me demanding answers when I’m not entitled to doing so. Instead, it was about your inability or unwillingness to either admit you were wrong or explain why you were right. Your joke is a good one, but it doesn’t do anything to answer the question you were asked, and not just by me.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Apr 24, 2010 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Unsportsmanlike play?

Should he intentionally strike out if the Brewers are up by more than 10 runs?

And what is wrong with the quote? He didn’t put down the Pirates. He had a great day and enjoyed it. What should he say? “I apologize for beating the Pirates so badly”? To me, that would be worse than what he said.

You really are looking for something to criticize with Braun.

by rlpete on Apr 23, 2010 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

the quote doesn't seem too bad to me

Braun (and Fielder) are still tools, of course. But also really good at baseball.

by PrincetonCubs on Apr 23, 2010 12:56 AM CDT reply actions

I actually think that...

Fielder is kind of a cool guy. For example, I think his uniform style as a tribute to the Negro Leagues is pretty sweet.

Does he do stuff that is lame (like their dumbass celebration routines)? Absolutely. But that notwithstanding, I think he offers a lot of positive characteristics as well.

As for Braun….

by CubsWin!Oregon on Apr 23, 2010 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, I'm not making such a big deal out of it because...

…that’s what Ryan Braun would say. The guy is a jerk, so what else do you expect? Scoring 20 runs is fair game because this is not high school. They’re all professionals on the field.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

by Ace Venom on Apr 23, 2010 7:52 AM CDT up reply actions

personally

I think Fielder’s one of the most classless ones on the field in terms of showing up the pitcher/other players. No matter how many tributes he gives out, he seems like he doesn’t have a whole lot of respect for the dignity of baseball.

by PrincetonCubs on Apr 23, 2010 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Two things that I've seen him do make me disagree with you

2009 – tipping his hat to Reed Johnson after Johnson robbed him of a grand slam.

2007 – handing Geovanny Soto his mask and patting him on the backside, after Soto got the better of a collision at home plate and hung on to the ball for the out.

Agreed.

Fielder is a class act. He also has spent a lot of time signing autographs for kids at Wrigley, and one day (either last year or in 2008, I can’t recall), he got out of a cab and was approached by one of the kids selling candy to raise money for their team.

He gave the kid $100 for the entire box.

I do think he’s had some unfortunate displays of anger, but overall, I think he’s alright.

Zambrano has been more classless IMHO

But many who are trying to rip Braum and pin a reputation (unwarranted) on Fielder would be quick to defend Zambrano i am sure

I'm certainly not defending Zambrano

he needs to tone his antics down, just like Valverde, Papelbon, etc etc

by PrincetonCubs on Apr 24, 2010 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Two nights ago he hit a foul ball that drilled a guy in the stands in Pittsburgh.

The guy was rattled, but ok. When Fielder reached on a single later in the at bat, he had the ball pulled and made sure the guy he hit got it.

(Of course, the fan was wearing a Fielder jersey at the time, so maybe that contributed to Fielder’s generosity.)

Also remind folks of the time he had to be restrained from going into the Dodgers locker room because he got hit by a pitch. Not a “class act” move.

in my view, there’s a fine line between the good ol’ home plate celebration, and then choreographing a routine. That was Ochocinco-esque.

Macha subbed out the heart of the lineup

Joe Inglett and Craig Counsell got multiple at bats. The third base coach started automatically putting up the stop sign on runners.

Plus, hey, both Charlie at the Pirates SBN blog and Al agree that the Brewers aren’t a very good team so you can hardly blame them for doing well when they get a chance.

They should fold right now and give every opponent a forfeit victory. They are just fleecing their fans.

Don't look now, but they're ahead of us.

As my wife reminds me on a daily basis.

Questions and observations:
- Are we being fleeced? Should we forfeit our games?
- If the Pirates folded, could we pick up Andrew McCutchen? He seems like a talented player with a good attitude and work ethic. I hope he doesn’t disappear. Garrett Jones, too.
- Man, you sure hate Pittsburgh. (As we’ve discussed before.)
- Thanks for sticking up against the inappropriate language yesterday.

can be classless the next 3 nights just like Braun. I’ll take a few 20-0 wins and Rami going nuts getting out of his early season woes.

by socalbob on Apr 23, 2010 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

I see nothing wrong with his comments.

His point, regarding failure, is that hitters are darn good if they fail 7 out of 10 times and it’s rare to have a game where almost everyone doesn’t fail.

I see no problem with piling runs on either. Last I checked, there’s no clock in baseball and it’s always possible, no matter how unlikely, that a team could come back. As long as the players aren’t gloating and rubbing it in, it’s the professional thing to do.
