Too early for Starlin?
Its obvious the Cubs tendencies have not changed since last year. They like to not hit and fail to drive runners. Its only sixteen games in and I don't want to jump the gun to early and say we are done because we are far from done but its clear the Cubs need a spark plug someone who can get the offense going. It's to bad we don't have the 2003 version of Mark Grudzielanek or the Mark Derosa of 2008. Could Starlin be that spark plug right now? At, 20 is it to young to call up Starlin for the gamble he could spark the offense? I say give them another week to attempt to hit and then if things haven't improved bring this kid up and give it a shot. The window of opportunity for this core to go to the playoffs is less and less each year. I think this is the last season to take a stab to get there with this core. The front of the lineup starts everything and I think Starlin could spark that a little bit. I want to know what you guys think.

Yes, it's too early to call him up.
He needs more time to develop and then there’s the arbitration issue. Regarding the latter point, please read this.

4/9/10: Carlos Silva strikes out Joey Votto on three pitches. Is that what you mean by "small sample size"?
Agreed
Treating a 20 yr. old kid like he’s going to come up and be a savior is a recipe for disaster IMO.
I’m fine with waiting until the rosters expand in September.

Theriot is a good Shortstop, people need to leave him alone. We need him at the top of the lineup!
I am glad Lou came to his senses and returned him to his correct spot batting first after telling everyone he would not vs lefties.
You can’t say Lou is not flexable!
You are a great poster. We all appreciate your sunny attitude. You're the best.
But you spelled “flexible” wrong.

Good Lord, man
yes. Let. It. Go. If the Cubs won’t bring up Cashner for fear of ruining his development, they damn sure aren’t bringing up Castro.
Is this going to be a daily thing here? Guys, let it go.
Yes its to early.
I have wanted Castro for awhile now until I read Archies post yesterday and how all that works. Keep him down there. The only lthing I didnt understand was Lou said he was close to making the club but wanted him to get some more at bats get him polished. But why back to AA why not to Triple A. I just didnt understand that part. But lets not turn Castro into a DeRosa, bullpen, Soriano thing hearing it over and over and over again.

Would Like to See Him at AAA
I’m afraid that the big club’s bleak situation necessitates a bit of a rush with Castro’s development. I think Castro is better than Darwin Barney in Iowa. I would like to see Castro get some time in AAA before getting called up. The SS situation in Chicago is not good with Theriot.

As has been mentioned repeatedly...
many prospects skip AAA altogether.
I’m not opposed to him going to AAA, but it isn’t necessary.
i have heard some people say re: castro that to bring him up now would be akin to how the cubs handled corey patterson and would stunt his development.
leave him in the minors. i wouldn’t let him sniff the majors until spring training next year when i think we have some openings available.
Patterson does not equal Castro
Period. Patterson probably needed 2 years of AA ball. He was there 1 year and wasn’t stellar by any means. Got promoted to AAA and was less than stellar again.
Castro has been outstanding last year and this year coupled with an incredible AZ Fall League against top prospects from all of baseball.
Again, Patterson’s failure has nothing to do with Castro and his development.
I'm on the verge of writing a story
on Patterson. I don’t think he would have been any better had he not been rushed.

look forward to that
I agree—the guy had flaws and didn’t take to coaching at all.
The frustrating thing about Patterson
He never really dominated after that awesome season at Lansing at age 19.
His AA performance was fine… not dominant, but fine…. and he easily could have repeated the level at 20. Instead, we promoted, him, he floundered badly at AAA, and then we promoted him to MLB at age 21 for some reason.
There’s certainly no reason to think that he ever would have recaptured the magic of that first pro season, even if he’d repeated AA – all that we know is that the “promotion regardless of performance” plan failed Corey.
The Cubs took that “patience with promotions” lesson and applied it to Felix Pie – they basically had him repeat every level until he was consistently dominating it. Of course, they forgot to apply that same patience at the MLB level, and bailed almost immediately for absolutely no return whatsoever.
That said, we can’t apply the Patterson or Pie results to dictate our treatment of Castro – it has to be handled as a unique situation. And based upon ST, the AFL, the early returns at Tenn, and (more as an “opportunity” than as a a “rationale” for promotion) the issues with the position at MLB, I’d give him an extended look in the 2nd half this year.

Patterson never hit like Castro.
Pie did, but we bailed on him after like 180 AB one year and 80 the next.
The Cubs need to treat Castro the way the Cards have treated Rasmus. (Or the way the Cubs have treated Soto.) Failure isn’t a death sentence – it won’t even mean losing the starting job, so long as you’re playing good defense. No need to make it happen immediately – just show what we all know you’re capable of.

Yes.
And this is about the 1000th time this has been discussed this week. Let’s not start new threads about this every time — there’s a perfectly good post in the rec list where this could have been a comment.

Starlin must be the answer!
Look at all the things Starlin™ can do!
He can replace Theriot. We hate that guy.
He can replace Fontenot. We hate that guy.
He can replace Jeff Baker. We hate that guy, though not as much as those Cajun weirdos.
He will inspire Ramirez to hit in the clutch.
His fantastic range at SS means that Ramirez will never, ever have to dive for a ball again, thus never risking injury to his shoulder.
He can play Robin to Ted Lilly’s Batman, and maybe someday he will be tough enough to defeat Chuck Norris on his own.
He will serve as Fukudome’s translator. In fact, he will teach Fukudome to speak English as well as Ron Santo.
He will teach Soriano to stop trying to pull breaking balls that are away and in the dirt.
He will pitch the eighth inning. And he will do it well.
As a registered dietitian, he will help Soto find the happy medium between “Fat kid who can’t hit” and “Anorexic runway model who can’t hit”.
His Clubhouse Leadership™ will make the Cubs bats less impotent in clutch situations.
He will make Cubs fans everywhere forget about Andres Blanco.
So call him up today. He is the difference maker!
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
Don't forget, he'll give your car an oil change while it's in the parking lot during the game.

LOL
I’m afraid that no matter how good Castro is that he can’t possibly live up to the hype that some have for him. I think it’s a bold statement on my part to say that I believe he’ll be better than Shawon Dunston. However, I’m not going to say something irresponsible like he’ll be better than Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken, Jr., or A-Rod. As good as Banks was, he couldn’t do much in the way of winning games for the Cubs in the 1950’s because the supporting cast was so bad.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
He's going to be better than Dunston. I don't think that's a bold statement.
Dunston was our SS for a long, long time. But he was only rarely league average. Most of the time, the guy was posting OPSes in the .600’s or low .700’s.

If it's too early based on...
his experience and/or Theriot’s production, then fair enough.
While I understand the business side of it, the Cubs can’t NOT call him up just to avoid that issue. This is a baseball team — their job is to win games. And if they feel that Castro gives them a better chance to win than not, then I’d hope the fan on Ricketts’ right shoulder trumps the businessman on his left shoulder.
Whether or not Castro
is called up before September……..can Lou please end the Theriot leadoff experiment now. He should be moved permanently to the 8 hole. I’m not sure who is a good lead off hitter, other than perhaps Fukudome, but it is not Theriot.
Just had to throw this in while on the subject of Castro…..LOL
I remember hearing about the next great Cub SS not too long ago
his name is Ronn Cedeno. So many had him penciled in as the long term solution at SS.
morale to the story, lets stop over hyping and let nature take its course
Unofficial Self Appointed President of the Castro Blocker Fan Club
I don't think that's really analogous.
Cedeno only popped onto our radars after an awesome season at AAA at age 22.
In his many, many seasons prior to AAA, he was a no-hit, all-glove, top-end as backup MLB MI guy. And that’s pretty much where he’s wound up.
Starlin has demonstrated quite a bit more than Ronny to this point. That’s why Starlin is getting exponentially more hype than Ronny ever dreamed of.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
that is true
and he was touted to be a gold glover in the making and had a bat for a short time, but he was also touted as our next long term SS which didnt work, maybe how fast he was or wasnt moved does differe between the two but it still is similar, where people are wanting the move to the newbie now instead of letting it take its natural course IMHO
Unofficial Self Appointed President of the Castro Blocker Fan Club
I've never seen someone not pan out because they spent too much time in the minors
Especially when they are still only twenty years old. The guy needs daily playing time to get better.
Couldn't he play daily for the Chicago Cubs?

Theriot is starting to hit the ball well
And is climbing towards .300, and Fontenot is playing too well to be benched. I don’t think Lou would bench Riot in favor of Castro this early.
AMEN

Castro Should Be Called Up Immediately!
At least promote him to AAA. He is tearing the cover off of the ball. Man Theriot would like awfully nice at 2b.

Not until July-ish
The bat appears to be nearly ready, but I want to see the defense be more consistent. Also want to see him take more pitches and show some improvements on the bases
