Cubs American Idol on TWIB

I'm not sure if its being repeated on MLB Network or syndicated elsewhere this week but "This Week in Baseball" had a fun feature on the Cubs during Spring Training.

It highlighted Ryan Dempster hosting a Cubs American Idol with many of the rookies in the camp. It's quite entertaining. If I can find a link on youtube I'll send it out but definitely try to DVR it.

Cubs should be featured in more mindless/fun activities throughout the season and off-season.

Here's something I heard about that contest.

Derrek Lee paid $400 out of his own pocket to have a piano delivered so some of the rookies could play.

Well

Derrek Lee takes 10 days to earn what those guys earn in a year. I bet that kind of thing happens all the time in MLB clubhouses and especially in ST. I bet Lilly spent 10 times that amount in Peoria last week.

Even so...

… it was a nice gesture.

So what?

It was still nice of Derrek to do that when he didn’t have to.

Yes it was nice

I didn’t think it was all that surprising/notable. $400 is nothing to a guy like Lee, but it’s nice that he did it.

and did it for fun

I saw that yesterday morning

When Justin Berg came in to yesterday’s game I turned to my 14-year-old (who also saw the TWIB feature) and said, “Now pitching…award-winning singer/songwriter…JUSTIN BERG.” Darwin Barney was rather impressive on piano.
