Good bit of background.

On the other hand, as someone who makes a living, in part, with a camera, I’m appalled at the video interviews.

I agree

Could the video be any closer to Lou’s face? A little awkward IMO.

Meh

It looks like it was shot by the beat reporter on a FLIP camera or something. No camera op that ESPN would hire would hand over footage that looks like that.

Welcome to the world of unprofessional video production. Now that everyone has a camera, stuff gets produced like this all the time.

interviews show that the cubs know they got something special

And as Hendry says, Castro will tell us when he is ready, (unless circumstances dictate otherwise), they want to see how he does in AAA, not need it for development—-see how he reacts to advanced minor league play and see how he reacts to cold weather baseball.

fyi

Castro should be a nice addition later

but the more i read about Castro the more I like Theriot since he is the underdog big time

The more you hear there's a more talented player coming to the Cubs

the more you hope the less talented player does not get replaced?

That makes perfect sense

The more hype I hear about a great player in the minors....

the more I hope that he at least turns into a serviceable Major League player. All signs are positive, but let’s not lose all sense of reality about what can happened, and what HAS happened many times with our “can’t miss” prospects. I don’t have to name them, you know who they are. I’m taking a wait and see approach to Castro.

Problem is the overhype

He isn’t likely to be Hanley Ramirez so a lot of people are going to be disappointed.

way to twist what i said

I want the best player to play, that is not the same as saying I am cheering more for Theriot to succeed each time I read about Castro. Why you ask? Cuz the longer Theriot produces two things happen
1. he helps the Cubs compete
2. Castro can get the needed experience at the lower levels before being thrown into the bigs premature

I just hope

he is part of a long line of Cub winning playoff teams.

by Grockcubs on Apr 3, 2010 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the plan is to move Theriot

to second when Castro comes up so he’ll be playing anyway. If Castro played so well in the minors that the Cubs could no longer justify keeping the very very average Theriot at short, that would be a good thing for the Cubs. Castro will be ready when he’s ready.

I’m just excited the Cubs might actually produce their first long-term productive position player since the Reagan administration.

WTH?

What’s with the “Blair Witch” style video on ESPN?

I know you can’t have the super cameras everywhere… but couldn’t they at least get somebody who can hold their iPhone steady for these interviews?

by fsuapollo on Apr 3, 2010 2:15 PM CDT reply actions

In some cases

the reporter has to shoot their own video. Therefore, it’s possible the reporter set up the camera — too close — turned it on, then, went to where Lou was instructed to stand to conduct the interview.

Photojournalists are being cut in downsizing times and reporters, who may have had little to no training in video are being forced to record their own interviews. (“Here’s the ON button.”)

Who needs quality? As some people claim, downsizing forces companies to do more with less. That’s physically impossible — let alone, a contrdiction. You do less with less.

And, usually — the tasks are not done as well as they were prior to the downsizing
