Cubs Minor League Wrap--May 10

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies got stuck in the Carolina Mudcats, 8-3 in ten innings.

Starting pitcher Mike Parisi was making his first start in AA this year and allowed one run on a solo home run. He gave up three hits total over the 2.2 innings he worked. He walked one and didn't strike out anyone.

Alex Maestri pitched the tenth and ran into some real problems. He allowed five runs on four hits, including a grand slam home run. Maestri walked two and didn't fan anyone.

Catcher Robinson Chirinos was 2 for 5 with an RBI double. First baseman Blake Lalli went 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs sent the Bradenton Maruaders to Davy Jones' Locker, 2-1 in 10 innings.

Starter Brooks Raley got back on track tonight with five shutout innings. He gave up four hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Aaron Shafer got the win with two perfect innings of relief. He neither walked nor struck out anyone.

Third baseman Ryan Flaherty went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI triple that gave the Cubs the lead in the tenth inning. He had two RBI total. Center fielder Brett Jackson was 2 for 4 with a double. He also stole a base, drew a walk and scored twice.

Josh-

Do you have any feeling what the plans are for Darwin Barney? It’s his third full year in the minor, has good not great numbers, and is a middle infielder. The kid from AA just got called up. Future doesn’t look good for him with the Cubs in the short to mid term. Any thoughts?

Not Josh

but I expect Barney would get a good shot for reserve infielder next year especially if one of more of Theriot, Fontenot and Baker are gone. I don’t think expectation for Barney is anything more than as a reserve but that is still a lot better than wasting money on the likes of Aaron Miles.

I think Barney

is trade bait. Certainly he could be a reserve infielder, but he’s more valuable to another team than he is to the Cubs right now.

And I say that as someone who likes Barney and think he’s got a chance to be a starting SS in the majors. But it’s not likely to be with the Cubs.

Parisi's injured

which is why he only went 2.2 innings last night. Could also explain why he’s been so lousy this year.
Link.

I was checking out Thomas Diamond to see how he was fairing.

Quite well, it seems. He threw relief in ST, if I remember correctly. He has been good as a starter so far this year. He had the TJ surgery and maybe it took him a couple years to get it back. He was a big time prospect for the Rangers.

Found this on the Wikipedia page on him:

Diamond made a name for himself in an obscure Instructional League game during which he tripped and fell on the mound while attempting a pickoff move. The opposing Oakland A’s prospects laughed at Diamond, who then walked off the mound towards the A’s dugout and told them that the next person to laugh was going to be wearing a fastball in the temple. Diamond then threw his next pitch three feet behind the hitter at the plate and then delivered nine consecutive strikes to punch out the side.

Haha! Sweet.

Diamond's doing well

Although I’d like to see him cut down on the walks a bit before promoting him.

Diamond was a huge name coming out of college. He’s never lived up to his amateur hype. Maybe he’s finally putting it together. He’s had some arm problems in the past.

More likely pen

if he comes up. But it depends on need. Who gets injured?
