The bottom half of the fifth inning of today's game pushed me over the edge. Judd Sirott was calling the play-by-play, and Marlon Byrd hit a fly ball. I'm listening to the call and can't figure out if the fly was caught or not, if it was an out or a hit. Judd is completely incapable of providing play-by-play that does not leave lengthy gaps in the call where you have no idea what is occurring.

I am not alone in my annoyance. Even Ron Santo became impatient with Judd in the top of the fifth, responding sharply to yet another comment by Judd that revealed how little he knows about baseball.

Is there any hope of getting Judd fired? What would it take? A WGN boycott? A letter-writing campaign or a petition for Judd's firing?

I am serious. I can't take it anymore. All suggestions welcome.

Ya um Im more worried about the team than 1 guy in the booth for what half a inning I dont listen that much on radio

How bout all that stuff letters and everything you focus it on the team rather than a PBP guy on the radio. The least Im worried bout is who is doin the radio calling. Im serious I cant take this team anymore lets gets that accomplished first. Not meaning to be rude just I could care less on the radio it would be different if he did the whole game but he dont just bare thru it for the few mins and turn that aggression towards the team and lets get the team better

Eric do you watch the games or listen to them?

I don’t live in Chicago nor do I have cable, but I can pull in WGN radio, and that is how I catch most of the Cubs games. That is how I’ve caught them for most of the last two decades or so I’ve been a Cubs fan. Yes this team sucks a lot, but trust me if you listened to him as often as I have in the 1 plus season you might not be ripping on this poster.

Thankfully I missed todays game due to friends graduation, but I have on more than one time missed plays b/c of him. If the TV guys did that, don’t you think people would complain. Before people talk about how Ronnie rambles and isn’t the best announcer… but when he has to recenter the play by play guy what is that saying?

Nope never watched them ever or listened

Their colors are black and orange right and the Cubs are a professional polo team right? He does 1 inning yes 1 inning as a few guys below me mentioned. And you asking me if I watch the games well according to you, you dont and havent in yrs so if u only listen to the radio and thats your only way to catch the Cubs dont yell about 1 inning. If thats all you hear from him are you comparing him to anybody else or just on him? And how was I ripping the poster? All I said was worry bout the team more than yelling about half a inning!! Its not that big of a deal out of over 2 hrs u hear for how long?

my question was

Do you listen to the game or are able to catch most of them on tv? I was curious b/c IF YOU LISTEN to most of them and think my thought is wrong is a lot different than if you watch them

I won’t criticize someone who watches the games and doesn’t like the announcer.

If you want to worry about the team there are a ton of other fan shots, posts and Al’s recaps where you can complain about them.

I wouldn't call him good

but he doesn’t have me trying to get him fired.

by JimboJet on May 15, 2010 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know if I want him fired

From what I understand he’s pretty good @ calling hockey games, let him stick to that. But maybe find someone else to do Cubs games.

His hockey calls are pretty good.

I can’t listen to him in the baseball booth though. It sounds like my kids doing play by play to their video games.

by HectorVillanueva on May 15, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude, I can call a pretty sick play by play in my friends Fifa 10 in the PS2

And I can do a sick play by play in Madden and in the SHOW. Hell, my friends dad says that I’m better than some professional. And maybe I have a future, I’m only 14!

by braziliancubsfan on May 15, 2010 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

If you're that good, go for it.

My kid is 4. His play by play is pretty awful. Still think it’s better than Judd’s.

WAIT WTF

You’re 14? You certainly seem much older.

They already have.

He’s a hockey announcer. WGN has him doing baseball because he’s already on the payroll and they’re being cheap due to the Tribco bankruptcy.

i live in reds territory, so unless the games are on wgn or espn or fox, i have to listen to the online stream. fingernails on a chalkboard, a jackhammer, an irl crapwagon, and detroit’s goal horn going on at the same time sound better than judd does calling an inning.

i know pat’s cushy deal that gives him an inning off (and if anyone needs a 1 inning break after carrying ron during games for however many years its him) but there needs to have been a better in-house search for a play-by-play guy. i’m almost turning off in the 5th inning for reasons other than performance on the field.

We do sometimes get up and turn it off

Not as much so far this season as last season.

I don’t get why people are objecting to a few complaints about listening most everyone, when ESPN does a game look @ the complaints. Same w/ Fox games. Hell Al even puts some of it in his recap.

Part of the problem...

…is that we’re comparing Sirott to Pat Hughes, who I honestly think is one of the best play-by-play people I’ve heard. I sometimes flip around on the Gameday Audio when I’m at work, and just want a ballgame to listen to, and really, there are some announcers out there who aren’t very good. To be sure, there are jewels, like Vin Scully who is in a league by himself, but I haven’t heard anyone paint as clear a picture as Pat does.

So, we have high standards, and Judd is suffering by comparison to them. Maybe someone could calculate his VORA (value over replacement announcer) and see! :-)

Yes!

Pat is incredible and makes the game so enjoyable. People seem to not like Ron Santo, but the two of them work well together and Ron keeps it interesting when the cubs are losing by talking about somethings other than baseball…such as his hair piece…did you know he has 6 of them? and gets them specially made?

by mdcubsfan on May 16, 2010 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

He's no Corey or Andy either

The tough part though is that the last two 5th inning/extra guys were really quite good (Corey Provus and Andy Masur). Unfortunately, the good guys go away because they are good. Judd, the only way I see Judd going anywhere is for a full time hockey gig, but, frankly, I bet he is paid better in his current WGN gig than many play-by-play hockey guys.

by Nibbles on May 16, 2010 11:14 PM CDT reply actions

You are complaining about a guy that does

1 inning on the radio, right?

If that’s all you have to worry about, life — indeed….is very good.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 16, 2010 11:50 PM CDT reply actions

That's kind of a silly argument

People complain about how the Cubs play on here too. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only thing they have to worry about in life.

I don’t want the guy to be fired…but it’d be nice if he took some cues from Pat.

by rgonzale on May 17, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Judd gets to much grief too

I’m not saying he’s any good but he’s certainly not as bad as some folks around here make him out to be – and yes I listen to most games on radio

by doofusguy on May 17, 2010 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

JUDD IS ALWAYS SHOUTING

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks like. His ‘banter’ with Ronnie is also pretty painful.

by rgonzale on May 17, 2010 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

The guy gets to do 162 inings a year.

Because of the unique situation w/Hughes, and Ron’s inability to step in and PBP. Radio color people through the league are normally able to handle an inning of PBP. Santo cannot.

So, the Cubs are stuck with having to find somebody to do one damn inning. Sirott has other work for WGN, to actually make this a legit job. With Provus and Masur, the Cubs were lucky — these guys had the chops and were able to use this as a springboard to Full-Time MLB gigs.

Let the guy alone, it’s tough to improve when you don’t have the air time.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on May 17, 2010 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

I won't let him alone.

He has a job to do and he sucks at it. He only has this job because he has a connected uncle. I listen to every single game on the radio. I will not rest until we are Judd-less!

by dfrancon on May 17, 2010 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Provus is OK

but Masur was just as bad as Sirott. You have a point that it’s only one inning a game, but it’s a shame that such a good broadcast has to sound terrible for 5 to 20 minutes every game.

by JohnM on May 18, 2010 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Andy Masur was 100 times better than Judd Sirott.

I have heard many, many baseball broadcasters over the last 40+ years. Sirott is by far the worst. It’s not even close.

by Al Yellon on May 18, 2010 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Meh

I suppose Masur wasn’t as bad as Sirott. He wasn’t as loud, and his description of the action wasn’t as incompetent. But he lacked any sense of rhythm and had a completely flat speaking voice.

by JohnM on May 18, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

If you start that boycott or petition let me know.

I’ll be glad to join you. He’s brutal to listen to. Yep, I noticed Ronnie’s even getting impatient with him too.
