A Blast From The Past: Cubs vs. Phillies Preview, Wednesday 5/19, 6:05 CT

It's a longshot, but the Cubs might, if they have their power-hitting shoes on tonight, be able to help Jamie Moyer break a longstanding major league record.

The record for home runs allowed by a pitcher in a career is 505, held by Hall of Famer Robin Roberts, who passed away last week. Although it's a somewhat "negative" record, take a look at the leaders on the career list -- of the top ten, six are Hall of Famers, another one should be (Bert Blyleven) and another one will be (Randy Johnson). Moyer enters tonight's game with 501 home runs allowed.

As the old saying goes, "You have to be good to do that." It's unlikely that the Cubs will hit five homers off Moyer tonight -- but he's already leading the league in HR allowed (10). Robin Roberts started his career with the Phillies and ended it with the Cubs. Moyer started his career with the Cubs and is ending it with the Phillies -- so a Cubs HR barrage tonight would be a fitting bookend, not to mention that it would likely give the Cubs a win.

Since Jamie Moyer spent most of his career with the Mariners (and some with the Cubs), he hasn't made that many starts vs. the Cubs despite ranking 17th on the all-time list with 616 games started -- just seven of them have come against the Cubs. This year, his 10 HR allowed leads the major leagues (tied with Ryan Rowland-Smith and Kevin Millwood), and his 5-2 record is mostly reflective of the 6.9 runs he's gotten from his team in run support per start (fourth in the NL). Derrek Lee is 5-for-11 (.455) against him; Alfonso Soriano has four career HR off Moyer, but that's in 53 AB; overall Soriano is just 12-for-53 (.226) vs. Moyer.

Tom Gorzelanny, who seems the most likely candidate to move out of the rotation when Z returns, has made only one career start vs. the Phillies -- almost three years ago, August 17, 2007 when he was with the Pirates. Quite a number of those players aren't with the Phillies any more; current Phillies are hitting a small-sample-size .333 (6-for-18) vs. Da Gorz.

BCB'er elgato, who wanted to see Jeff Baker in right field all spring training, will get his wish tonight. Baker is playing right field. Lineup via Twittermyer:

Baker in right? Cubs lineup vs. Moyer: riot, castro, lee, byrd, rami, sori, BAKER (RF), soto, gorz.

The last time Jeff Baker played right field...

… was on September 20, 2008. He hit a home run that day. Let’s hope he repeats that performance.

The Cubs sure are determined to

stunt Colvin’s growth. Seriously, what kind of organization does this crap? They’re determined to screw up the short-term AND the long-term?

Colvin should never have been in the majors without a serious commitment to get him lots of ABs including against lefties.

by paulucla on May 19, 2010 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

Lou doesn't want to start him against a lefty.

Which is dumb, but hardly a reason to think that Colvin’s growth will be stunted.

by elgato on May 19, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

If he doesn't get a chance

to hit lefties. How is he supposed to become an everyday player?

by TheRamZamDLEE on May 19, 2010 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

in response to both questions ...

I think the move is dumb (and I said that). But it’s one game. Sheesh.

by elgato on May 19, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I am annoyed because

all we here about is how hard it is to rotate playing time among 5 guys in the outfield (one is a rookie we hope develops into a star) and then all of a sudden he runs Baker out there.

It’s typical Lou, and I’m sick of it.

by paulucla on May 19, 2010 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I would start Colvin, too.

I’m just tired of getting upset over Lou’s goofiness. And, anyway, Baker needs to play once in a while (when he’s not trying to light his farts on fire).

by elgato on May 19, 2010 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm just using the Baker thing to express

my frustration at Colvin even being in the majors. He belongs in AAA unless the Cubs are committed to playing him almost every day against both righties and lefties. Otherwise, he’s developing into a role player, not a star.

by paulucla on May 19, 2010 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Otherwise, he’s developing into a role player, not a star.

It’s not fair to make this judgment after six weeks.

by Al Yellon on May 19, 2010 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

That's sure the hard argument I have a hard time criticizing Lou for.

He’s got tons of options and lots of players to keep happy with playing time. It’s impossible to please everyone. I think there is some validity to keeping one of our bench players in the minors.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way.
