Building a ballclub

What Hendry doesnt grasp....

Star-divide

This season has been, as usual, very frustrating. Hendry was limited in his offseason due to no payroll flexibility(self created).  We have lost at least 5-6 games so far due to his failure to address the 8th inning bullpen situation. I dont understand how he came into this season with that issue left hanging. It has dealt a huge blow to our start. I also think Lou is not on his game and isnt making great decisions, and this is happening too regularly to ignore. Confusing lineups that dont reflect historical statistical matchup advantages, strange in game decisions...

I actually think that Cashner coming up could solve the 8th. Finally. Lets hope so. I support this move 100 pct. Grabow should only be a situational left hander. Hendry forced him into a larger role and he has failed at that role. If he was only in to face a lefty he could excel again perhaps and maybe the pitching staff can be stabilized and everyone fall into their roles.

Counting on Jeff Smardija was not a good choice. But fundamentally, it starts with building a team with no speed, no true leadoff hitter with no ability to manufacture a run when it isnt hitting. This has been going on since Kenny Lofton was sent packing and not resigned after he was a huge catalyst for the NLCS team in 2003.( for Corey Patterson). It confounds me that year after year, we choose the same path with the same players. A speedy leadoff hitter who gets on base can put a lot of pressure on the defense. The Cubs are all station to station.

Aramis Ramirez is making huge coin and he is personally responsible for a lot of the losing as well so far in 2010. This cant be on Hendry as Ramirez failures have been unexplainable.

However, the Chicago Cubs are a poorly constructed team with gaps in critical areas and some holes springing leaks where it wasnt anticipated to leak. But underneath it all, I think the Cubs have overpaid for players for past production and need to understand that winning baseball comes from blending younger players with hunger for the money not too many older players who already got their money.  Soriano, Fukodome, Zambrano, Lee, Ramirez ..so much money tied up and so little production.

Colvin should  be playing, and if that means sitting down Fukodome or Byrd or Soriano, it should be done. Theriot and Fontenot should be platooning. Ramirez should either hit now or sit until he heals. Its not too late but this team has too many holes and one dimensional players I feel to succeed this season without a trade.

The Angels need a bat, maybe we can find a chemistry changing player that can help make the pieces fit here. If the struggling continues, Piniella should be replaced by Brenly or Sandberg. Because if it continues, Hendry will be a seller at the deadline and should be looking to move Lee or Zambrano once he reestablishes value and give the Cubs some payroll flexibility.

The Cubs make me crazy.

hendry

has done good and bad. caridad and berg pitched great last sept and looked like good bullpen pieces.they imploded. not hendrys fault.as for the hitters just a bunch of underachievers. this team never gets it together.even when they make the playoffs they fall flat. tiring.

Who was the dominant set-up man in mind at the beginning of this season?

You know, someone proven, who could close at times when Marmol was unavailable and who could get the ball to him on other days? You know, someone that a championship team has? I’ll hang up and wait for your answer.

Bottom line is, Hendry sunk this team with the roster he sent out there this year (and last year).

Building a ballclub...

…and better yet, a solid organization is paramount to having a consistant winner. When you have the $$$ resources the Cubs do, it is an absolute shame they have extended stretches without competing for a championship.

A sound organizational philosophy, scouting, player develpment and the necessary skill of knowing how to put a nice balanced roster together are ingrediants you see from the clubs who contend virtually every year. Under Hendry, the Cubs have not done enough of these things to avoid down periods, and watching the top payroll in the NL get beat by clubs they outspent by tens of millions of dollars. Wilken was a nice addition, and we are starting to see some of his work, but the overall damage has been done, and it won’t be corrected until someone with the right skills is calling the shots.

Agree

Wilkens has made a difference. Hendry does not know how to “fit” a team together. Most of the consistently good teams preach defense at the key positions of SS, catcher, & CF. It’s been a long time since the Cubs have done this. Braves, Cardinal, Twins, Angels, etc. are a few of the teams who value solid defense at those positions and hence have been consistent contenders. Also, when a team signs a free agent it is usually to fill a major need. Hendry is real bad at this. Signs Sori and then tries to make him a CF. Signs Bradley and tries to make him a power hitting clean-up man. Signs Koske & also believes he’s a middle of the order run producer. A free agent must fill an exact postion in the field AND in the lineup order.

I have to agree with you on some of these things:

—Ramirez should be disabled if he’s in so much pain that he has to hold his bat a different way. And why would he hit clean-up in supposed pain, along with a .160 BA? DL him and then promote Chad Tracy, who is tearing the cover of the ball in AAA at 3B.

-Fontenot and Colvin should be playing more and there’s no excuse that they don’t. I agree with your comment about the manager not looking into statistical match-ups before games. Let’s look at yesterday-Theriot went 0-5 the previous day and has a .316 OBP (going into yesterday). He had a .265 career average against Wainright while Fontenot, who was 5 for his last 7 with two triples the previous day, has a career average of .353 against him. For some reason, he was sitting and didn’t even get into the game! Horrendous managing.

—Besides that, Soriano had a career average of .179 against Wainright and Fukudome a .182 average against him. Looked like a good day to play Colvin to me. I don’t buy this “we’re going to play Colvin more” garbage.

—Nady had a .375 career average against Wainright. Wouldn’t he have a better shot then either of those two guys as well? I’m tired of this lefty-righty stuff. If a guy hits a pitcher well, especially career-wise against an ace in a big game, then he should play. Obviously someone isn’t preparing well for these games.

—Speaking of Theriot, I know he leads the league in singles, but someone with a .316 OBP has no business batting 1 or 2. He should be batting 8th. I do agree that he SHOULD platoon with Fontenot at 2B as that was what they were doing with Fontenot/Baker before Theriot was moved.

—Starlin Castro has been playing well the past few days with some outstanding defense, so I expect him to sit today. That’s the usual management move on this team, to sit people when they start to get hot while you play people who aren’t doing anything.

—I think that you’re right, that we do need a new manager. I would replace Piniella with Sandberg immediately. We need someone who wants to be here and who will put effort into things. Let’s reward loyalty to the Cubs for once instead of kicking loyal people in the teeth (see Mark Grace, Mark DeRosa, Kerry Wood, etc.) This team needs to go in a different direction because the course we’re on obviously isn’t working.

—I’d also get a new GM in there before our fire sale, because Hendry will probably end up giving away Lilly, Lee, and others for nothing like he did Maddux. He’s always trying to “help” other teams or players so that they can play for contenders. How about helping the Cubs?

—I would put Grabow up in a hotel, and tell him to take his time recovering from his “knee tendinitis”. When he says that he’s recovered, tell him to take a few more weeks just to make sure it’s all healed.

—Fukudome is 0 for 6 lifetime against Ohlendorf, the Pirates pitcher for today. Let’s see if he’s playing and leading off again. For me, I’d send a line-up out there today of Fontenot 3B, Castro SS, Colvin RF, Lee 1B, Byrd CF, Soriano LF, Soto C, Theriot SS, Wells P.

Hey, what do you know?

Fukudome’s leading off, just like I predicted, and struck out on three pitches (two swinging) against a guy who he has hit .000 (0-6) against and who has more walks than strikeouts.

Plus, no Colvin, just as I thought.

Plus, Lee’s hitting 3rd again followed by Ramirez 4th again.

Same crap, a different day.

Please not the Maddux thing again

It was a special circumstance. The Dodgers were basically the only team that wanted Maddux that he would go to ( FYI he did NOT have an NTC , he did not need it, everyone knew that you don’t trade Maddux without his approval). If Lee or Lilly get traded, I am sure Hendry will get something worthwhile or they will not be traded. Hendry’s track record on trades, especially in season trades is very good.
