It's Official: Grabow To DL, Cashner To Be Recalled Today
Via Bruce Levine at ESPNChicago.com. Andrew Cashner will replace John Grabow, whose knee problems have made him completely ineffective.
Cashner will have to be added to the 40-man roster, which is currently full. The most logical move would be putting Angel Guzman on the 60-day DL (60-day DL guys don't count against the 40-man roster limit).

The knee problems are real.
He had an MRI on them three weeks ago. Why they didn’t DL him then is beyond me.

Why it took them this long to DL Grabow is beyond me.
He’s been ineffective the entire year. Does anyone know how many wins keeping him on the roster costs us?

Directly responsible for three losses, since he's 0-3.
Put at least two other April games that were close out of reach.

His WARP
is -1.1, meaning he costs us about 1 less win than an average, cheap, player.

There's nothing wrong with Grabow's knee
that a new arm won’t cure.

Oh, come on, Damen.
You know very well that a knee issue can make a pitcher ineffective.

Don't get me started on Grabow..
This injury is dubious at best, as has been the whole Grabow matter since his coming to Chicago.
Grabow was gonna be a problem this year, regardless of reason.

Dubious or not...
… if they were going to report a problem three weeks ago, he should have been DL’d then.

It is dubious at best? Based on what?

Based on the cubs own report that the MRI was clear?
He had a test, had no injury, and kept pitching up to and including yesterday. Now he’s “hurt”. It doesn’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing here. And it’s the right move.

The MRI was negative
Maybe Grabow just stinks. No. That’s not true. Drop the maybe. In any case, please let’s send Howry for an MRI too. Then we can bring up Jackson.
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.
if the problems were so real
there’s no way he would’ve pitched yesterday
he was DL’ed for ineffectiveness, yesterday’s appearance was telling. They decided to burn him because they knew he was the guy they were removing from the roster for Cashner

Not necessarily.
The Cubs in recent years have been very reluctant to DL veterans even when they were obviously hurt — like Soriano last year.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
he was chosen
as the sacrificial lamb yesterday in a 7-1 game and left to go an extended outing so as to make sure NOT to use anyone else in the pen because they knew in advance they were making this move
If you had serious concerns about his health you would’ve pulled him after the HR yesterday for fear of him doing further damage. You’re putting on blinders here

Wait, you're suggesting the Cubs use the DL for less than honest reasons?

MRI showed no knee problems.
Just because he had an MRI doesn’t mean a whole lot. He had some discomfort, had test run, it showed no problem with his knee, and he returned to pitching poorly.

No, that is not correct.
The MRI showed no structural damage. He had cortisone, which does indicate a problem. He pitched well twice, THEN returned to pitching poorly.

he never showed anything with the Cubs and that's that
He went to a new situation, and now he’s blossoming.

Actually he had pretty nice numbers
in the minors. The problem was he played 3B and so did Ramirez. I believe he was a 5 year guy that we had to place on waivers and the Brewers claimed him.
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.
He can play second too
According to the numbers, he’s about an average fielder there, and actually below average at third.

I don't agree.
I have to say this move is not in Cashners best interest imo. He has only been starting for a little over a year. He has made great strides starting this year and to move him to the pen now seems a little ridiculous to me.
I thought they moved Jackson to the pen in AAA for this exact situation. Now we have both of our top 2 SP prospects working out of the bullpen.

Jackson moved back to being a starting pitcher

Still
I still think Jackson makes more sense.
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
if you mean make more sense in the bullpen
I disagree. Cashner’s stuff is perfect for the pen. Mid to upper 90s on the fastball, really good slider, and a changeup. Jackson, on the other hand, has a fastball that barely reaches 93, above average curveball, very good slider as well, and fringe change.

Cash
Was finally making strides as a SP. His CU has been much improved and he’s holding velo late into games. He’s only just starting to stretch out his arm and learn to really pitch for 6-7 innings. Makes no sense to put him in the pen now. I had serious doubts about his ability to continue to start but he has made serious strides and was looking like 1 of the best SP in the high minors.
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
He does have good stuff for the bullpen.
But I’d just make a decision about what he’ll be and then keep him there. None of this relieve, start, relieve, start, relieve, start crap like they did with Samardzija. That is how you screw up pitchers/prospects.

+1
I agree totally. I think he has the stuff to start but I don’t wanna see a Brandon Marrow like situation in Seattle.
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
Look at Johnathon Papelbon
Do you think they regret making him a reliever?
There fitting him to the needs of the team NOW. They don’t need starting pitching, they need relievers, if the Cubs, or Cashner, don’t work out this year, expect him to go back down to get stretched out for a starters role, and then take Lilly’s slot in the rotation next year.

As I mentioned the other day...
… the Cardinals did the same thing with Wainwright when they needed a reliever. Did not hurt him in the least to return to starting the next year.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Prospects react diffrently.
While both are great stories I could name numerous times when it didn’t work. The fact that he’s just begun to master his CU and command and finally keeping his velo late into games seems to be a disservice. Could he work outta the pen and go back to starting? Sure.
The problem is he will rarley, if ever use his CU now. Could this hurt the progress of his CU? It could. He might not regain the feel. My point being this is just a short sighted move for a team that at this point has shown that they are not a playoff contender. I’m just be more cautious w/ a guy who was finally showing huge progress in starting.

" seems to be a disservice"
- should read, “could do him a disservice”
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
My point in short.
Is why take a chance of stunting a players growth who has finally started showing the organization everything they had hoped to see from him in terms of starting.

You have Jackson AND Diamond down in Iowa
Who are both destroying as starting pitchers.

Good, getting Grabow out of games is a step in the right direction
now DL rami, call up Tracy, platoon him with Baker at third. Split time (almost evenly) at 2B with Fontenot and Theriot, and get Colvin those 3 starts a week that he was promised.
I said pretty much the same thing three days ago.
I’d also say it’s time to give D-Lee a day off.
I am having problems understanding why ARam has played at all lately.
Those 2 games played really screwed up backdating the DL.
If changes are TRULY coming and he is out again today, why is Tracy not up?
But we need to just trust Lou and Jim Hendry! They know more than we do, NBF told us all that last night in the thread and he is always right!
by TJ11 on May 31, 2010 10:13 AM CDT reply actions 1 recs
Tracy should indeed be called up, at least until Rami’s really healthy. As it has been said by Al and others, Fontenot isn’t a 3rd baseman.
Great that Cashner’s up. Great that Grabow’s down to get healthy. Now all that’s left is to close my eyes and think of England while Z pitches. Light candles. Sacrifice a chicken. You know the drill.
Numbers may not lie, but they don’t tell the whole truth (and nothing but the truth), either. -- Doug Glanville
Hopefully the time off will help Grabow
Cashner is an immediate need, and hopefully will be valuable, but he definitely should be groomed as a starter and not become a career bullpen guy. Tracy should be here at least until Rami gets right.
