Minor League Updates

Here are some updates on Cub prospects as well as some of my own thoughts. I like to post these here for some of our friends who don't follow the minors as closely. I'm just gonna do like 3-4 prospects at a time and try and make this a regular thing over the next 2 weeks.

Brett Jackson CF Daytona (high A)- 280/398/416 3hr 26rbi 10sb....after starting red hot his BA went into a freefall hitting some .142 for about 2 weeks. In his last 10 games he's been hitting the ball better with some power (268 439 slg). Has racked up a ton of walks as well as Ks 39/54. Even though he's a college player he's age apptopriate (21) for high A. I like the Grady-lite comps he's been getting. I worry about his ability to hit for avg. at higher levels because of his K rate. I'm thinking he could be a 250-270 15/15, good obp, lot's of Ks in the majors while playing solid to above average defense in CF. Should be moved up to AA at some point this year and be Ml ready by mid season 2011.

Darwin Barney SS Iowa (AAA)-290/313/366....1 of my favriote Cub 'specs. This kids a winner and got great baseball instincts leading his average tools to play up. Does not walk much  8bb 238abs or hit for power so he doesn't grade out as a ML regular but should be a solid utility player. Best case scenario is a Macier Izturis (Angels) type but that's probably a bit optimistic so Omar Infante is a fair comp imo.

Trey McNutt RHP Peoria (Low A)- 5-0 1.65 60/23 bb/k 54 ip...No Cub prospect has had a better season or risen higher then McNutt. He has been absolutley outstanding thus far. He had command issues coming into the season and still could use some work but he seems to be getting better. How good a ML player he will be is dependent on how well he develops his change and how far his command comes. The Cubs nabbed this arm in the 32 round last year which is 1 reason  why I'm a bit more optimistic about Hayden Simpson then your average fan.

Reggie Golden OF 2011 2nd round pick (65th overall)- Golden had 1st round talent and I did see a few mock drafts that him going on the 1st round (not many but some) so getting him in the 2nd round was great vlaue. Toolsy but raw he's the ultimate boom or bust pick. Standing 5'10 210 with a ton of power in his uppercut swing to go with above average speed. I love this type of pick in the 2nd round. His swing is rather simple and he's got a decent arm that should allow him to be at least an average ML RF. The draw backs are he swings and misses often and may struggle against pro competition unless he learns to recognize and lay off breaking stuff. He has star potential but has a long ways to go to reach his ceiling.
