No Sweep, Please: Cubs vs. White Sox Preview, Sunday 6/13, 7:05 CT
Tonight's game will be the 75th between the Cubs and White Sox since interleague play began in 1997; the White Sox lead the all-time series to date 39-35.
In that time there have been five individual series sweeps:
Cubs, 1998; White Sox, 1999; Cubs, 2004; Cubs, 2007; White Sox, 2008.
The only one of those that occurred on enemy turf was the Cubs' three-game sweep on the South Side in 2007. The White Sox have never swept a series at Wrigley Field.
Enough. Stop the losing streak. Win tonight.

Gavin Floyd is having a rough year, although he pitched well in his last start against the Tigers. He has faced the Cubs only once, on June 18, 2009 at Wrigley Field. Both Floyd and Carlos Zambrano threw well that day, but neither was involved in the decision, a 6-5 Cubs win. What's most interesting about that boxscore -- a game from less than a year ago -- is how many players for both teams in that game who are no longer with the team they played for then (13 in all, if you're counting).
Ted Lilly has ten career starts vs. the White Sox and is 5-2, but with a 5.94 ERA. Most of those starts were while he was an AL pitcher with Toronto and Oakland; only two of them, one in 2007 and one in 2008, have been since Ted became a Cub. In those two starts, Ted has a win and a no-decision and a 3.95 ERA. Paul Konerko has three career HR in 21 AB vs. Ted -- yet another reason to not let Konerko beat the Cubs tonight.
Today's game is on ESPN. If you like, start a pool as to what time Joe Morgan will state a "fact" about the Cubs that is false. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today, although all the games should be almost over by now.

Today's first pitch thread will be up at 7 pm CDT, and the overflows will post at 8, 9 and 9:45 pm CDT. Apologies for yesterday's overflows; there was a posting time error made by me. Today's will post at the proper times.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

1 for 3 makes a good batting average. 1 for 3 in series does not make a good winning percentage. Please stop confusing the two.

Tonight could be a start in the right direction. Lets hope so.
Need a "W" in the worst way...
May the bats come alive tonight and may Lilly hit all his spots. Cubs win 7-1…
Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in!
Just gonna sit back with a cup of coffee and homemade cheesecake and hope we win.
It’s getting harder and harder to “expect” wins as the season goes on. Just gotta relax, enjoy what [little] success there is, and hope for the best.

Didn't both teams get a series sweep at home in 2008?

Yeah I thought that too.
We swept at Wrigley and they swept at the Cell. I was suppose to win a large bet if they could have won 1 of 3.

Correct me if I'm wrong,
But didn’t the Cubs sweep the White Sox at Wrigley Field in 2008? I went to Game 2 of that series, so I should know.
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

It's sadder that the Cubs don't, either.

I’m only going to tune in to see the Hawks with the Stanley Cup at the game. After that I’ll probably tune it out………sad but true. Unless by some miracle the Cubs are doing well.
The collective sapped will of the Cubs fanbase
has to be taking the buzz out of this for Sox fans. How can you demoralize a fandom that’s already at rock bottom?

True.
However, I believe the red card against Cahill was unnecessary, and a little excessive on the part of the referee.
I guess there’s a reason the guy who refereed that match is called “Little Dracula” in Mexico.

The general opinion here was: That red card was a joke.
"A waist is a terrible thing to mind." - Terry 'Fat Tub of Goo' Forster
I was chatting with BCB member Azul Cachorro about that card.
Apparently, that referee is not a very good one in Mexico. Not only that, but he is also very controversial. He also has a reputation for being unnecessarily harsh on players in the matches he officiates.
The better referee from Mexico, Armando Benito Archundia, did not referee this game. He is generally regarded as one of the best referees from Mexico, but he is retiring after this World Cup.
