It's interesting that he actually started a bunch of games as catcher for the A's...something I think the Cubs only did for a few innings.

Too bad he didn't have as a strong of a start to the season as he did for the Cubs last year.

Hmmm.

There was some speculation at the end of last season that Lou wasn’t playing Fox much because the Cubs believed that playing him would lower his value.

Considering that Fox helped the Cubs get rid of Miles and has now been DFA’d, I wonder if there’s something to the theory.

Now if only Macha (or any manager) could be convinced to take a chance and pinch hit the BU catcher in a late inning to take the 1 in a 100 chance that the emergency catcher would actually have to catch…

Piniella has a bizzare catcher issue, too

He won’t use Soto for Hill, even though Soto’s going in the game once Hill is removed.

Rating the trade

So in exchange for a pair of players who have DFA’d three times in the last five months and a few million bucks, the Cubs received:

A LH-hitting outfielder who is tearing up AA.
A guy who is having a solid year in the pen in High-A
A big league reliever who has, admittedly, struggled in his time with the Cubs this year.

This trade was a win for the Cubs. The jury is still out, so it maybe isn’t a huge win, but it is a win nonetheless.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

by Ross on Jun 14, 2010 11:56 AM CDT reply actions

by simply moving miles

the trade would’ve been a win. Btw, Morla is in Low A right now.

There are also examples the other way

Jose Bautista, released by the Pirates, leading the AL in home runs, Austin Kearns, sucked in the NL w/ multiple teams, having a very strong year for the Indians. You need to come up with a little more than one example to make such a strong statement. For hitters, the difference between the two leagues isn’t as pronounced as it is for pitchers.

by JSB on Jun 14, 2010 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

True.

Actually, I agree with you, Al. Usually hitters (and pitchers) fare better in the NL,. but Byrd isn’t a great example:

Nationals (2006): .223
Rangers (2007): .307

So no Wrigley Field farewell tour for Jake Fox?

Is DFA the one where there’s a 10 day window for the club to try and trade him, if that doesn’t work he gets sent down but he can ask for his release? Or something like that?

What I really want to know though is if he’s still with the team for those 10 days, i.e. will he be coming to Wrigley this week to hit a few farewell BP balls onto Waveland or not.

Yes, that’s exactly what Designated For Assignment means. However, he is not on the team — DFA has the effect of immediate removal from the roster.

I saw him at an A's game in Oakland last Wednesday

And I would not even expect any BP balls from him. He was scuffling pretty badly, and playing left field, by the way. The A’s looked completely punchless in that game.

New plan

last year we traded Jake Fox and were able to dump Miles contract with him.

How about we pick up Fox, have him hit a few home runs, then trade him and Grabow back to the As?

How many times could we do this before Billy Beane caught on?

I'd rather have Fox than Jeff Baker.

At least Fox could catch in a pinch and he was a good hitter for the Cubs. Also, he’s a good power threat off the bench, which we don’t have right now.

by TheGrinch13 on Jun 14, 2010 4:01 PM CDT reply actions

I'd rather have Jeff Baker over Jake Fox

I’d rather have the versatile player that can play 5 positions over a guy who is limited basically to 1 (sure, Jake Fox can catch, but he’s not that good. He can play in the OF, but he’s not that good. He’s basically a 1st/DH guy).

If Fox has more power than Baker, it’s not by much. Baker has a .165 ISOP this year, a career ISOP of .185. No one really expected Fox to maintain his .200+ ISOP.

by toonsterwu on Jun 14, 2010 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Baker is a better bench player

If I am trying to field the best AAA team, maybe I want Fox.

by JSB on Jun 14, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Fox could fit on some teams bench

particularly in the AL. Just don’t see the fit for us right now. If the Cubs want to bring him back for AAA, I’d be okay with that.

and in case you forgot

here is one of the many posts you were shown that gave you actual facts to show that you were dead wrong

Well, if you want to use actual evidence… I’ll take Scales. Bobby’s PH line:

7-14 (.500), 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .533 OBP, 1.214 SLG

Reed Johnson as a PH:

4-15 (.267), 0 HR, 2 RBI, .353 OBP, .267 SLG

Jake Fox as a PH:

5-24 (.208), 2 2B, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .300 OBP, .292 SLG

That’s the "big bench bat" we can’t replace?

If you’re going to continue to make random claims about the greatness of Jake Fox, you might wish to check some numbers first. In all of your ranting, you have yet to make anything that even resembles a rationally thought out argument.

There's one thing I'll never understand

Why the Cubs didn’t put Fox at 3b in Des Moines for a few weeks straight last year when Ramirez went down. His catcher skills translated well to 3b, but the Cubs just kept moving him around. Oh, well.

Meant to say

Let him play some in Des Moines, then bring him up at 3b in Chicago. He worked out better there than the combo of Fontenot, Baker, and Scales.
