Did fans really boo the bunt attempt in the 8th inning?

Missed the game. Was out of town all weekend and had other things to do last night.

Reading some of the recaps and stories now.

Did fans really boo Beckham's bunt attempt in the 8th inning? In a 1-0 game? Did they really?

If so, then those fans are too stupid to live. They are sucking up oxygen that we could use on more important things. They are taking up space that we could use to plant more trees. They are participating in a society that would be improved by their resignation from the human race.

I'm glad Lilly's no-hitter was busted now. Those fans don't deserve to see anything special.

Do not bring me baseball's unwritten rules. If the rule isn't written down, then it doesn't exist. Period. Shut up about it. When you're done, shut up about it some more.

It's not even an unwritten rule

There is nothing wrong with a batter trying to get on base – that’s their job, after all.

There was a FanShot link to an article about unwritten rules after Dallas Braden pitched a fit over ARod walked across “his” mound. A couple of HoF pitchers were in the conversation, and all of them agreed that attempting to bunt for a hit was perfectly acceptable during a no-hitter.

I think it would be cheesy in a 10-0 game

but a 1-0 game???

That crap just cements Wrigley’s reputation as a stadium where people go for beer and boobies and only have a vague idea a baseball game is taking place.

Similar to Best Hitter Getting Intentionally Walked

Fans don’t want a hitter to break up a no-hitter on a bunt. They would rather have it broken up on a clean single to center, which is what happened. The attempted bunt was a good idea for the White Sox only being down by one run.

How many times have you fans boo when first base is open and the home team’s best hitter gets intentionally walked? The fans want to see the big hitter get a chance to drive in runs, but it’s a smart move many times on the part of the visiting team.

I think you can judge a fan base's intelligence on

1) Whether they boo an intentional walk. (Extra stupid if they boo a VISITING player being walked — which is what happened with McGwire and Sosa)

2) Whether they boo when a pitcher fakes a throw to first because they are a) too stupid to understand the balk rule and b) too stupid to know they don’t know the balk rule.

3) Boo bunts to break up no-hitters

Even In St. Louis

I heard the fans boo when Pujols was intentionally walked ahead of Ryan Ludwick a couple of years back. Pujols or Ludwick? Which hitter was more dangerous? Ludwick had a good year, whenever that was. I think it was 2008, but Ludwick was no Pujols and still isn’t.

They are better than Cubs fans, for the most part, by they still have enough folks from southern Missouri that somehow fnd their way to games.

They are only better than Cub fans if they suit your argument.

Cardinal fans are pompous and boo people (including their own team) just as much if not more often than Cub fans in Wrigley Field. When their team wins the WS, it still is their primary objective to be better than the Cubs and denounce Chicago. I hope today talking outlandish stuff here in this post got you out of your funk…otherwise it was a waste.

A New Crowd Option.

I have no problem with the bunt attempt. The problem is that there is no way for fans to express their disapproval in such situations. Booing is a little extreme (especially since it didn’t work) for this instance. So I propose the Point and Laugh. Since the bunt went foul, I think the entire crowd should’ve pointed and laughed like Nelson Muntz. Ha-Ha!

It’s the equivalent of the “air-ball” chant at basketball games. I mean, Chipper only comes to town one series a year, so we don’t get to use the “Lar-ry” chant for, like, 3 games.

A very stupid man once said
I am pro-booing, or at least, pro-choice booing.

I think the fans pays their money and deserve to see a product. At the end of the day, this is entertainment. If you went to a rock concert and saw a shoddy show, you’d be upset.

I am not there to serve the player’s needs. They are there to entertain me and provide me with a nice distraction to my day. I have a job, a wife, several dogs and a baby on the way. At any one time, I am stressing out over something.

The Cubs (and Bulls and Packers and Blues and Illini) provide release from that.

And if that means booing, even when it is illogical, ill-conceived and against my own rules, is part of that.

A no-hitter is very entertaining. Having it broken up by a “cheap” hit immediately strikes one as bush-league. Who does Beckham think he is, Pete Rose?

What if that bunt led to 2 runs and a W?

Would it be bush league in that situation? Every game starts as a perfect game until somebody gets on base. Near no-hitters don’t necessarily mean W’s. What’s wrong with Beckham trying to do what he can to win the (still very winnable) game?

by madcow256 on Jun 14, 2010 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's my comment on that.

If the game is 10-0, then yes, breaking up a no-hitter with a bunt is crappy.

In a 1-0 game, the team is trying to get runners on base. I had no problem with it. In fact, I thought Pierre might do it in the 9th, and he might have if it hadn’t been raining.

Booing is an emotional reaction

And the reaction to seeing someone trying to break up history with a bunt is disapproval.

Comparing it to someone not understanding the balk rule, or the reasons for an intentional walk is ridiculous – the fans understand completely that what Beckham was doing was within the rules. They just thought it was douchey and were expressing as much.

Even for a judgmental blowhard like yourself, trying to use this as a litmus test for fan intelligence is pretty stupid.

I admit that when it happened....

I thought “I can’t believe he did that” with a no hitter on the line. The fan in me wanted to see my 3rd Cub no hitter (sadly the other 2 have been seen on TV too) but, after that initial shock wore off I have no problem with it. And the game circumstance is the deciding factor…at 1-0 in the 8th every hitter should have been willing to do whatever it took to get a hit. Yes, it is “better” for a clean, hard, no doubt about it type of hit but, the Sox needed runners and Beckman was just doing his job.

Too Stupid to Live?? Really Worf

Based on your criteria than there are many people that post on this site that are too stupid to live. This rhetoric has got to stop or at least change. Not everyone is going to have the same opinion on baseball or the Cubs as you do. There are plenty of knowledgeable fans that do not want to see a no hitter broken up but understand that it is the hitter’s job to get on base. They can and should be allowed to express their OPINIONS just like you do often on this site.

by Chodes on Jun 14, 2010 1:55 PM CDT reply actions

Considering you didn't watch the game

You really have no right to criticize any fans booing.

You know some of us spent the night witnessing what could have been a special game. To see a player almost break up the no no with a bunt would have sucked badly. It’s not that it’s an unwritten rule; it’s more that it was a sneaky thing to do. The field was getting wet as well which would have made the out even more difficult.

Thankfully this wasn’t a game-changing moment and it really doesn’t make a difference anyways since the no no was broke up.

But yes, fans had the right to boo the choice of bunting in that moment, even if it was a 1-0 game.

by ak123 on Jun 14, 2010 2:00 PM CDT reply actions

OK, fans have the right to boo

but I don’t have the right to say, “You’re stupid to boo”

Here are the WRITTEN rules.

5.04 The offensive team’s objective is to have its batter become a runner, and its runners advance.
5.05 The defensive team’s objective is to prevent offensive players from becoming runners, and to prevent their advance around the bases.

You want a no-hitter? Don’t allow any hits. That includes bunts.

You say "sneaky," I say "strategic."

Let’s say it’s a 1-0 game with the White Sox winning and Floyd still has his no-hitter going. And Marlon Byrd, though it could be anyone, comes up and spots the 3B playing back. So he decides he’s going to lay one down the line and hustle down to first. It’s not “sneaky,” it’s smart/clever/crafty/wily. Are we going to berate Marlon Byrd for trying to get on base in a close ballgame? No.

And whether or not someone watched the game really has no bearing on it. Do you have an opinion on that should-be perfect game? Did you watch it?

I did watch the should-be perfect game

And I feel horrible for everyone involved.

My issue was that Worf didn’t even see a video clip of the at-bat and he’s criticizing Cubs fans. If he watched the attempted bunt I wouldn’t have even replied.

by ak123 on Jun 14, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, bad example by me.

Do you have an opinion on Ty Cobb? Babe Ruth? Home Run Baker? Josh Gibson? Cool Papa Bell? How many of these guys did you see play? But we’ve read about them.

Just like Worf read a number of “stories and recaps” and is gathering information from those sources. My point is that whether or not he was watching the game as it happened does not change his opinion of the fans reaction. He feels like booing a bunt attempt in a close game regardless of how many hits have been surrendered is as foolish as many of us find bunting when down 10-0 just to break up a no-hitter. That, to me, seems pretty valid.

It’s a reasonable discussion we’re having and I don’t intend for the following question to come across as rude, but… does this clarify my point at all?

"It's Spring Training. You know how many home runs Barry Bonds hit off me? One - in Spring Training." - Big Z

by Phubbies on Jun 14, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You make a much more valid point with Cobbs/Ruth as examples

In the end, we each have our own opinions. I don’t promote booing (would never boo a player for struggling) but I felt the statement was out of line.

Regardless, the bunt play did not break up a no no so it’s not worth debating over this too much.

And that's a very good point.

You’re right, it’s kind of a big discussion over what amounted to a strike. And, in fairness, I can easily see your side. Like you said, just a difference of opinion.

late in the game is saying I don’t think I can get a hit today so I’m going to try to trick the pitcher. I didn’t really have a problem watching it with the score 1-0…if he gets on base he could easily score the tying run. But I sure can understand the fans not liking it.

I saw the game

Yes, there was a bit of booing, but just a bit. It was sort of like when an opposing pitcher throws over to 1B a time or two too many. It wasn’t “serious” booing.

But, yes, there was nothing wrong with Beckham trying to lay down a bunt in that situation. His job is to get on base he shouldn’t give a damn about whether Lilly was throwing a no-hitter or not.

These 2 teams

are collectively 60 games under .500. They are going nowhere. The game is meaningless in the context of the season.

To that end, it doens’t mater to me that the score was 1-0 instead of 10-0. The run didn’t matter in the scope of the season. A no-hitter is historic. You could go to 30 games a year your whole life and not see one.

I’m ok with the booing. It was 10 seconds of booing and then done.

That adds up to 13 games under.

There's nothing wrong with the fans booing Beckham after the bunt attempt

Obviously, they want to see the no hitter. That said, I didn’t mind that Beckham tried to bunt. If he needs to get on base by bunting, he needs to do it. That said, the Cubs do have a defensive team on the field, and if Beckham gets on, put the blame on the defense for not seeing it coming. In a no-hitter, you have to expect anything.

by braziliancubsfan on Jun 14, 2010 5:45 PM CDT reply actions

I've booed an opposing pitcher throwing over to first

to try and hold the runner on.

I understood perfectly well that he was doing exactly what I would expect my team to do in that situation, but he is from the team my team is trying to beat, sometimes the team that is my team’s mortal enemy, and I just felt like doing it. It wasn’t a statement of malice, just boisterous fan ribbing, done almost in jest.

I kind of think booing someone trying to bunt for a base hit to break up a no-hitter is similar, in that you’re essentially saying “Hey, nobody diresepects Ted Lilly! That’s my guy!”

I get that it seems really stupid, but it probably isn’t.

Take in Context

First, this is the Cubs vs. sox here. Guillen got booed for holding up the Stanley Cup. Beckham would have gotten booed if he stepped out of the box when Lilly was ready to pitch. AJ gets booed for showing up to work that night. And it wasn’t that much booing.

If anyone deserved booing it was Lee for that terrible steal attempt. The ball was sitting right in front of AJ and Lee was a dead duck.

Home Team vs. Road Team

Whenever you hear about this bunting in a no-hitter/booing the hitter question, it’s always the home team fans booing a road team player for attempting to break-up the no hitter. Has anyone ever heard of the home team fans booing a home team player for a bunt attempt? I haven’t.

Fans boo now any chance they get. If a road team pitcher throws over to first too often, the home fans boo.

This post is moronic.

If you don’t like “unwritten rules” of the game then why not come up with your own sport where everything is acceptable and anything you feel is “okay” is permitted?

Often when you open your mouth (so to speak) here, it sounds as though you just live in your own little narcissistic “Worf” world where you feel you can berate the lot of us and then turn around and subject us to your “family stories” and expect us to give a shit.

Dude, get over yourself and understand that people who have been fans of this game a lot longer than you, have developed a belief system which no novice boy is going to change.

If the GD fans can boo Soriano on opening day whether he deserves it or not…then we can boo a player for trying to cheaply break up a no-no.

I bood because I think it was a pussy move and I boo you because, well….

No, you booed

Because you do not understand the most basic concept of how to win a baseball game. Down 1-0, you get on any way you can.

By the way, Clutch posted a link to an earlier Fanshot in which FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHERS said they had no problem with bunting to break up a no-hitter.

But I guess you know better.

There is no such thing as an ugly female breast

by Worf on Jun 15, 2010 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually genius,

I understand how to win a baseball game, it’s pretty simple…outscore the other team. For people who have enjoyed the game for (obviously) longer than you have, they understand the likely motives behind laying down a bunt in this situation. You must too or you wouldn’t have cited Clutch’s fanshot.

As for the “FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHERS” you speak of, I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion…which is EXACTLY why your post (actually MOST of your posts besides the ones that force us to keep up to date with your family life) violates our right to have OUR own.

Therefore, had your statement been made in a less narrowminded and agressive manner, I may not have taken such exception.

And for the record, I DO know better, I could probably throw a freakin dart and hit someone who knows better than you Worf.

Oh and the number of votes for “it is acceptable to boo”, OUTNUMBER ANY OTHER CATEGORY OF VOTING. Just cause you chose to overload your poll with idiotic choices, doesn’t mean your point would be made.

I don't think fans are stupid for booing and I'm not glad Lilly's no hitter was broken up because fans booed.

Sometimes fans just boo the opposition. There’s nothing wrong with bunting in a 1-0 game. And if the roles were reversed, the fans would want the Cubs to do it. I think you are getting too excited about this. I didn’t boo but I was pretty close and yelled to Beckem to swing the bat.

Pefectly acceptable and I don't eat paste either.

Considering the opponent, the rivalry, and the potential no-hitter, it is perfectly fine to boo. If I was there I would have booed, and it would have been because I would be pissed if a bunt would have ruined Lilly’s no-hitter. Had a successful bunt been made, I would have been pissed, but not because I think there is some sort of rule, not because I don’t think he should have went for a bunt there either, simply because that would have been a craptastic way to ruin Lilly’s no-hitter. I wouldn’t fault the batter for trying, but I would still soundly boo the attempt. Capice?

Now I’ve reached the bandwagon status. I did see Hull and Oates a few times in their prime here in STL…a thing of beauty to see. Never saw no look passes hit a stick like Oates did it. They used to have “Hull and Oates” posters all over the city…with the local newsman and weather man imitating them.

That was also the era when we drove the 350 miles south to DOMINATE the Checkerdome (ala St. Louis Arena). It was great to see 18,000 in attendance, 11,000 ’Hawks fans.

Blues fan. Yikes !! That’s akin to slitting of the wrists in the most heinous way possible. Red Birds, love or hate ‘em, that’s where its at in the gateway city.

Just what was that uniform at the time Gretzky was there? That was almost 70’s-80’s Vancouver Canuck puke-like.

Never said I was ever a Blues fan. But watching Hull and Oates together was pretty cool.

I had some friends give me a ticket once in a great while then to the old barn there. Actually, it was great to see a concert there. Around that time was fun when the Hawks were good as well as the Blues. Just didn’t last long for the Blues…which is sad to me cause the rivalry sucks now, mostly involving St. Louis trying to injure us to save what little pride they have left. I’ve always been a Hawks fan cause I grew up in the Chicago area…but was a casual hockey fan until a few years ago. I know what you are saying cause I couldn’t ever consider talking positively of the Cards being a die hard Cub fan. thanks for the welcome to Blackhawk Nation…I’ve enjoyed talking crap to the Blues fans here the last few years and am glad to be part of the Nation!

Gretzky wore 99 I think for a month perhaps. That was a big joke. Some fans around here still wear that jersey they bought …for some weird reason.

The newsteam as I said before parodied them using the reference to the hockey players and Hall and Oates both, making some funny commercials. I did enjoy seeing the Hawks beat them as they had a good team around then.

Interesting little side note is the weather man part of that duo, Bob Richards , I saw a couple days at a gas station…then he crashed his private plane in an apparent suicide attempt. He was married and had been caught having an affair. It was too bizarre to try and make up. The guy was not even as tall as Mike Fontenot.
