Bring Back Jake Fox!!!

I think the Cubs should bring back Jake Fox, recently designated for assignment by the A's.  He can play either corner infield position, corner outfield position, and backup catcher.  He proved in Oakland that he can play catcher effectively - I'd prefer him over Xavier Nady at any position.

I am a HUGE Jake Fox fan and that may be clouding my judgement, but it seems to me that he provides more pop than Tracy/Nady/Hill in a lineup that desperately needs more power.

Thoughts?

I'd take Nady over Fox

(and I’m a Fox guy). For Fox to be successful, he needs to be in an environment where he will consistently get at bats. That looked like Oakland, until they acquired Kouzmanoff and moved Chavez to DH and put Jake into a platoon.

Fox wouldn’t get the at bats needed to get into a groove with the Cubs.

Put him at catcher full time

And see what he does. I’m guessing that he’d give us some extra power in the middle of the line-up instead of an automatic out, which is what we have now day in and day out from our catching position.

Seriously, is anyone excited when Soto or Hill comes up with the game on the line?

by TheGrinch13 on Jun 16, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Fox's OPS this year is 591 and he's a poor catcher

Soto’s OPS is 860 this year. So, you might want to reconsider that thought.

"The ones who want to achieve and win championships motivate themselves." - Da Coach

by Sandberg's evil twin on Jun 15, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

As I've said a million times.

You have to play to hit. Fox was doing FINE for the first several months or so after he was brought up. Then, Piniella inexplicably began playing Bobby Scales every day in his place.

(This is where you give the same old tired argument that Scales had better numbers in a pinch and when playing)

Yes, that is correct. BECAUSE HE PLAYED EVERY DAY and STARTED ALL THE TIME! That helps you keep your timing and produce better! Do you even get that?

You can’t hit well if you are starting once every three weeks and batting only against the other team’s closers. That puts a lot of stress on a guy and makes them feel like they have to hit a homerun every single time.

If they would just get him back, let him catch every day, and shut up, then a lot of you would be putting your foots in your mouths.

But hey, we have such a great line-up right now, don’t we? We spent the first few months with a .165 hitter batting clean-up and a guy hitting .233 hitting third. We also have a guy sitting on the bench almost every night (a la Jake Fox) even though he has as many homeruns as Derrek Lee in more than half the at bats (along with the same amount of doubles and 1 more triple).

Just like they are screaming for more playing time for Colvin this year, fans were calling for more playing time for Fox last year. When he got into the on-deck circle fans would cheer last year because they knew what kind of power that he had, and because they knew that he was getting the shaft. Sounds like someone this year, doesn’t it?

If it doesn’t change this year, the same thing will start to happen to Colvin’s stats. But hey, then we can bring up Scales again!

I guess I’m wrong, because our manager has such a great track record during the past couple of years with managing decisions. Last night’s decision about Zambrano batting was the icing on the cake.

Bottom line is, we have a right to be fans of whoever we want to support. Fox played hard and was treated badly last year, and I’m sure that he’ll play well once he’s given a chance to play every day under a manager who supports him. I wish him the best of luck and hopefully he’ll get a chance to play for the Cubs again someday under a manager who will give him a chance.

by TheGrinch13 on Jun 16, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

you make no sense

first you argue he is a great bat off the bench, now change it to how he needs to play to hit. Get over Fox, he IS NOT good, he is AAAA player. nice guy or not, he is not that good

I've decided to give my self one moment to respond to you

I’ve read this blog now for over two years, in that time, I can’t say I ever really remember you getting into an intellectual conversation on the sport of baseball here. Now, I’m not saying I have, as I’m mostly just a reader of this site.
What I have seen you do, is comment constantly with snarky one liners, such as wearing flip flops into my great church of baseball blogs. These comments do not make you witty, they do not make you smart, they certainly don’t make you funny. In my opinion they merely make you some guy who watches too much TV or too many movies, as can be evidenced by the name you have chosen for this site.
I would rather read comments from a constant pessimist like BLou before you, because at least he is taking a side of an argument and challenging you to refute it with facts. And he, like I, loses his temper when the only response you have is some stupid one liner.
I guess you’ve been around here long enough that no one ever takes issue with you really doing nothing but going around mocking other posters, and good for you, you found your niche in life, I’m glad. But I just want you to know you sir are an asshole, and unbelievably annoying.

I like Fox.

I had the opportunity to meet him this year, and had a nice, if brief, conversation. That said, I wouldn’t bring him back. His lack of plate discipline is a problem, and the continued inability to hit anything other than fastballs.

He didn’t show much upside here in Oakland, but part of that problem was a lack of consistent work. It’s not like he had the chance to develop a rhythm.

you have said he would be a great bat off the bench

which does not include a lot of playing time, so which is it?

If Fox was half as talented/versatile as the Grinch claims

Every single organization would be pining for the guy. Either way, the Cubs aren’t going to sign him, so if the rest of us are going to be convinced of his supreme awesomeness, it’s going to have to be with another team.

Hmm...very economical thinking...I like it!

Think of next year…Fox signed at minor league salary + Toyota and Cheese sign revenue…now you’ve got some real money to put into a backup player that used to be good and now will fail for us…

How did I miss out on this?

Oh yeah, work :(

This was a glorious threadjacking though. Nothing like making many mountains out of a single molehill.

That wasn't even a molehill

That was an anthill. Probably the best thread high-jack I have ever witnessed.

That whole exchange reminded me of Goodfellas.

You’re Tommy sitting at the table with the good old boys and he was Spider just schlepping drinks. He finally gets fed up and tells you to go f*ck yourself…..but, alas you don’t shoot him – he just stuck the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger himself with that AIDS comment.

could Fox end up in japan?

That actually wouldn't be a bad destination for him.

He’s a good guy. Fans there would love him. And he could probably crush Japanese pitching.

He should take Micah Hoffpauir with him.
