In my opinion we should vote for Marlon Byrd.

Not only has he been a pleasure to watch with his unselfish attitude and leadership.. he has been a our best hitter. Even though WAR shouldn't be taken too seriously so far this year, he has been a 3.0 Win Above Replacement, and worth well over his contract value (12 million).

He's also been above average defensively.

I know the latter two are not offensive players, but they have a pretty good shot at making the roster.

Byrd probably won't be elected.

But, his numbers could get him on the team IF there aren’t too many other outfielders.

He's currently sitting with the second best BA in the league. If that's true

then the fans are biased idiots. Ah wait….just realized I’m living in St. Louis darn it.

The most offensive Cub?

I am going with A-Ram. Batting .170 for two months and saying everything was OK , is pretty offensive to me.

I agree that Byrd's been good and among the most worthy of Cubs for the All-Star game...

but a few quibbles: WAR should be taken seriously. It’s similar to a counting stat; Byrd may not put up 3.0 WAR for the second half of the season, but discounting that he’s already accumulated 3.0 WAR would be like saying we shouldn’t take it seriously were he to have 20 HRs to this point for the fact that he’s unlikely to keep it up in the second half.

Also, Byrd’s getting $3 million this season, with $5.5mil in 2011 and $6.5mil in 2012.

It's unlike other counting stats in that

it can go down over time too. Obviously, he’d have to play at a level lower than a replacement-level player to do that though.

That said, 3.0 WAR ranks him second in the NL so far this year. He’d deserve to make the squad assuming we don’t have a situation where we have multiple corner outfielders voted in ahead of a CF or two.

Off the top of my head..

Andre Either, McCutchen, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart are the only guys that may deserve to take a spot ahead of Byrd. And the only centerfielder out of the bunch is McCutchen. If 3 centerfielders are elected, I would think, McCutchen, Byrd, and Chris Young being the ones chosen.

Maybe next year is finally our year.

I thought

and am probably wrong – that WAR is looking at the whole year, so Byrd isnt good for 3 wins right now but over the course of 162 games he is good for 3 wins over a replacement

Doesn't matter

There’s no chance of any Cub being elected to the starting line-up (nor should there be).

There are too many good outfielder floating around to believe that Byrd even has a realistic chance as an alternate.

The Cubs’ rep will most likely be Marmol (or maybe Silva).
